Bridge Analysis

The document provides instructions for an assignment on bridge analysis and design. Students are asked to answer questions about forces on a loaded bridge, draw a free body diagram, and explain why steel and I-shaped beams are used in bridge construction. They must also write a 400+ word story incorporating bridge terminology that discusses the purpose, location, conditions considered, and performance of a designed bridge, as well as lessons learned.

Bridge Analysis (Due Monday 11/21/11)

1. What are the forces acting ON your bridge as there is a load in the center?
2. Draw a F.B.D. of your bridge as there is a load in the center.
Read pages 264-266 to answer the following questions.
3. Why is steel used in the construction of bridges and building?
4. Where is the neutral in a horizontal beam that support a load?
5. Why is the cross section of a steel beam I-shaped and not rectangular?
6. If you had to drill several holes in a girder of a beam bridge which location would weaken it the
least?
Write a creative short story on an engineer building a bridge include these question into your
story.
(The length of the story should be at least 400 words.)

As the bridge was being built:
What is the purpose of the bridge?
What is the bridge crossing?
Where or what setting is it located?
What environmental conditions needed to be considered?
As the bridge went through a stress load:
What cause the bridge to collapse?
What worked well with your design?
How successful do you think your bridge was?
What problems did you encounter?
As you have to build another one:
How are you going to construct the next one?
What would you change or make different about your design?
