about the couses, locations and effects of some of the most importont noturol disosters such as eorthguokes,
floods, ond hurricanes.We olso will look of how loss of life ond property domoge con be minimized by
implementing geologic knowledge. The course will olso brief ly examine less common, but possibly more
devostating cotastrophes such as large volconic eruptions, meteorite impocts, and rapid climote change.

How To Do Well In This Course: You ore responsible for the moterial presented in this course (lecture ond
reading). Some of whot I will cover in the lecture is not covered in the book, ond, as a general stotement, the
exoms will concentrote on the moteriol f present in lecture. fn other words, if you ottand ond understond the
lectures, you will do well in the course. Conversely, if you blow off lectures, you will probobly do poorly. Pleose
come see me ANYTIME you ore conf used. ff you wish to see me outside my off ice hours, coll, stop by, or cotch
me at the end of lecture. Geology is o visual science. f will show you lots of figures, ond diogroms which. you
need to try ond get into your notes. ff you don't understond something I draw or show, pleose let me know.
There will be o number of f ilms shown in closs, which ore oll very much foir gome on the quizzes ond ore
intended to odd to your visual understonding of these disosters. This is a large lecture holl, ond f osk thot you
refroin from ANY talking while closs is in session. If you need to discuss something with your neighbor, pleose
feel free to step outside ond do so.

rest of the closs shortly after the guiz is taken, the moke-up quizzes ore 10 question essoy. fn foirness to your
clossmates, there is olso no extro credit or scale opplied to the moke-up guiz. For eoch doy thot you do not
hove o documented excuse for missing the guiz, your grode will be lowered 10 points, ond this includes weekend
days. Eoch guiz is worth ?5% of your grode. T offer extro credit in the form of six extra point guestions ot
the end of eoch exom. Also, PLEASE refer to the University's Acodemic Honesty Policy ot:
