CHAPTER-1

I.I INTRODUCTION
A domestic worker, also known as a servant, is a person who works within
the employers housemaids. Domestic servant performed a variety of household service
for an individual or a family
It is found that among all categories in the informal sector,
earning of domestic servant are lowest and their problems are many.
They are being employed generally for household task which includes
washing

untensils and clothes, fetching water, sweeping & cleaning

house along with a few outdoors task like irregular marketing, grocery
shopping ratio drawing even childcare activities clearly. In fact many of
these women are looking after more than one household but spend
more time and work far more for their employers than work in their
own household.
Women in our society have so far had only a second
status. It is well known that the economic dependence of women upon
men is one of the primary reason which has pushed them into the
background. Most of them live in slums, struggle every day for their
survival and face numerous problems in their day to day life like long
hours of work, insecurity regarding job, low status within the house as
well as in the outside world.

1.2

OBJECTIVES:
1) To know the socio-economic standard.
2) To know the problems faced by domestic servant.

1.3 HYPOTHESIS:
1) With less financial support their, socio economic standard is very low
2) May be they are treated badly by their masters.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

1) To understand the nature of domestics servants (housemaids).
2) To know the behavior of housemaids at every door.
3) To know the behavior of housemaids towards the various families

1.5 METHOD OF COLLECTION OF DATA:

I have collected data using the primary method of data collection in the
form of questionnaire. Each questionnaire includes 35 questions regarding all
their social economic personal life etc. I had given option with all
questionnaire. I had given blank space to fill the answer , if is a simple and
easy way of data collection.
I choose this method because I read one research AMLAN
MAJUMDAR. The research was on women domestic workers their life ,

problems and dreams. In that research he used questionnaire method of data

collection , so I insipire form that method.
To know their problems in day to day life and also their routine.
To know socio-economic condition questions are asked on their monthly
income and expenditure , contribution of their family members , relation
with husband , behavior of the employer their leisure time

1.6

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
I had read many researches, interview, journals etc,

regarding domestic servant house maids. I will discuss few

important points which I came to know after reading these
researches, interview. first I will let you know about one
Numerous studies have been made in the last few decades about the role of
women in emerging labour market. Haque has analysed the concentration of women in
low paid occupations. He argued that the socio economic conditions of women workers
in South Asia are poor because they are concentrated in low paid occupations. This is
primarily because the society has discriminated against women by not allowing them to
act as major players in economic activities.
Leela Gulati has made an attempt to study the women in the unorganized sector in
Kerala on the basis of micro-level observations. It appeared that women go to work
because of the irregular nature of employment that their men are involved in and the low
incomes they make. Regarding the kind of work opportunity open to women in the
unorganized sector, very often they choose the type of work that their parents or relatives
are involved in. Also they prefer to stick on the same kind of work they are similar with
and pick closer by locations.
Bulgovind Baboo and Laxmi Panwar13 have studied the maid servants in Hariana. The
study emphasizes that they are leading a miserable life. They suffer from low wage,
long hours of work, shift in nature of job, lack of freedom and low prestige due to inferior
status of the job. Due to lack of coordination their children are neglected and familial
relations becomes tense. The fragmented nature of their job, lack of education and low
bargaining capacity refrain them from organizing collectively.

1.7

SAMPLING
For the data collection I have selected the area Kedari

Nagar, Salunke Vihar (Pune).

Where

we can find many domestic

servant (housemaids). I used primary method of data collection that is

in the form of questionnaire. And the questionnaire was designed by all
the objectives of the study in mind. I had distributed 20 questionnaire
among the different housemaids who work different houses and in
around 3-4 days I have collected all sample

1.8

ANALYSIS OF DATA:
When all data got collected with the help of questionnaire ,

I did tabulation than I came to know about the count of answers for
every question. After that I made table and pie charts for each
questions which shows the percentage wise answers for each
questions and explain the table so that anyone can easily understand
the table and pie charts and it is easy to understand the research

1.9 LIMITATION OF STUDY:

1) The sample size was limited.
2) Time was to short to collect the data.
3) As I mentioned before that I have used primary method of data
collection that is in the form of questionnaire in that I have to collect
data personally from everyone, this is time consuming process.
4)

One more difficulty which I faced during collection is that the

language problem.
5)

Few people where not ready to share their personal details.

6)

Behavior of many servant was not- coprative.

PROBLEMS FACED BY DOMESTIC SERVANT (HOUSEMAIDS)

AT WORK PLACE:

The general problems faced by the female domestic servant at

work place are as under.
1) The domestic servant are not satisfied with their present wages
and they expect more. it is true that the wages level of
domestic maids are much less than not only what they need.
2) The workers often express their grievences for imposing extra
work burden by the employers while guest come. The extra
money for that additional work is not sufficient.
3) The employers do not permit any extra leave. As a result , they
have to attend work regularly leaving any urgent personal
necessity.
4) Many housemaids face sexual harassment by their male
masters verbal sexual harassment by the male masters is some
things that is generally very common. This is one of those
problems at work place that only women face and it is probably
one of the few problems that may be perpetuated by male
masters.

CHAPTER 3

3.1 SUMMARY:
As we all know that what is domestic servant
(housemaids). By my research I came to know about the socioeconomic background, what problems they are facing at work place,
number of their family members, their income, salary and saving etc.
When I start my research that time I was thinking
that housemaids why they are working because of depression ,
financial problem, but after collecting data from 20 respondent I came
to know about that majority of domestic servants (housemaids)
working because of their financial condition is bad, that is 85 %
respondent financial condition is bad , 15 % respondent financial
condition is good. And most of the housemaids family also not
supportive 70 % respondent family is supportive, 30 % respondent
family is not supportive. And they are facing personal problems like
husband bits if they came late from work etc. and I came to know
about the 60 % of respondent have financial support from their family
40 % respondent dont have financial support from their family.
And after that I came to know about that the
respondent masters family members behavior also not good , 75 %
kids are behaving rudely , 25 % kids worst behaving with the
respondent. And 35 % respondent are satisfied with their salary , 65 %
respondent are not satisfied with their salary . this is reason of that the
respondent financial condition is bad.

3.2 CONCLUSION:
After doing analysis of the survey data we can say that
the socio economic

condition of the respondents is not good.

Their life histories also reveal that they experienced the same
condition at their young age. They face problems both at home and at
work place. At home they do not get the pleasant atmosphere what
they want.

At work place they have a very work load with less

remuneration.
.

They want to make their children educated but an

increasing cost is a great concern. Migration is big concern from our

point of view as studies show that many of the

urban dwellers, in

unorganized sectors particularly women and their children will become

the poorest people in the world.

3.3 HOW TO TREAT HOUSEMAIDS (SUGGESSION):

1) There should be a law which will protect the right of the domestic
servants(housemaids)
2) They should provide residence free of costs with little amount of
wages.
3)
Government should increase the employment opportunities
4) The people or masters should give the respect and security to
their domestic servant (housemaids)
5) Masters should fulfill their rights
