Task 1 Scenario
Further accommodation is required for teaching facilities to the rear of the new Business
School at the (Docklands Campus). This will require the construction of a 4 storey r.c.
framed building with a basement car park to be built next to the west of the existing
Library. The floors, columns and beams are to reinforced insitu concrete above ground
level with non-loadbearing brick cladding and sealed unit double glazed windows.
See Figure 1 : Site Layout Plan for details
Two trial holes were taken which revealed sandy clay down to 12m overlain by made
ground and building debris/old shallow strip foundations. The water table was located at
a depth of 1.5 m below ground level.
Task 1
i)
Differentiate between the following two methods of basement construction in how
they are built and where each would be used:
(1) Bottomup construction
(2) Top-down construction
10 Marks
ii) Select a suitable method to build the new basement as described in the scenario above
including all required temporary works. Produce a neat accurate labelled vertical
section through the underground car park to illustrate your construction methods.
Include details of the dewatering method to be used. Clearly explain the sequence of
works required.
20 Marks
iii) Describe and explain with the use of neat labelled diagrams the sequence, techniques
and temporary works needed to construct the r.c. frame elements, namely:
(1) The columns
(2) The beams
(3) The floors
Ensure that you describe good formwork and concrete practices that should be
used in each case.
Task 2
30 Marks
With references to the drawing issued for your Constructionarium field project, either the
Gurkin Tower or the Donn Valley Stadium, you are required to :
Take off all the quantities of your project for the formwork and concrete works only to
CEMM4 on standard dimension paper only. You will exclude excavation works, backfilling
and reinforcement. Pictorials can be used to aid the process, ensure all waste calculations
are shown clearly along with classification numbers.
Note that all formwork will be fair faced finished, all concrete C40. From the taking off
produce a priced Bill of Quantities to CEMM4 order, with correct collection and summary
pages clearly labelled. Costs can be taken from the CEMM3/4 pricing manuals or Laxtons
pricing books from the library (read only). All descriptions must be clear, follow taking off
methods used in the class lectures.

they can be easily checked. Sketches can be in pencil with inked notes, CAD or
Word, but must be scanned and included in electronic submission. All pages should
be clearly numbered.
Submissions must be properly structured, this involves pre-planning your work. A
conclusion will be expected.
The work must have a bibliography and/or a list of references used, properly cited
within the text. All referenced to CITE THEM RIGHT.
In industry presentation of information is of paramount importance. Marks will be
awarded for the quality of the presentation skills used.
All work submitted electronically via the Turnitin Link provided only. No other
