The Grammar-Translation

method developed towards the end of the

XIX century, typically to study "dead
languages", with very little or no focus on
speaking and listening

The Direct Method

characterized by the obligatory use of the L2

in classroom with no transaltion into L1
permitted; teaching vocabulary through
pantomiming, real-life objects and other visual
materials; teaching grammar by using an
inductive approach (i.e. having learners find
out rules through the presentation of adequate
linguistic forms in the target language);
centrality of spoken language (including a
native-like pronunciation); focus on questionanswer patterns; teacher-centering; Invented
in the 1920s by Berlitz,

the Audiolingual Method

Inspired by behavioural psychology (aka "The

Army Method") based on the idea that
learning is habit formation (drills) and the best
way to learn in memorization taught through
repetative drills (overlearning). Little or no
grammatical explanation or interaction is
provided. Teacher can speak in native
language, but students are discouraged.Good
use of visuals and audios.

The Community Language Learning Method

Inspired by 1970s Curran's Counceling

Learning, is based on the belief that affective
factors are important, so L1 and L2 are both
used in classroom with the Ts as
facilitators/translators; the idea of trust/
support is central

The Silent way

Developed by Gattegno in the 1970s.

Normally grouped along HUMANISTIC
APPROACHES to language learning.
Gattegno believed that learning is self-initiated
and self-directed with the teacher's role being
that of a technician or facilitator, deliberately
unobtrusive (discovery learning). Learning is
largely mediated through the use of physical
objects such as FIDEL CHARTS, which are
colour coded charts representing the sounds
of the language and CUISENAIRE RODS,
small coloured blocks of wood. By tapping
out sounds on the charts to form words and
manipulating these words using the rods,
basic sentence patterns are created and
reflected upon. The Silent Way concentrates
largely on grammar and FUNCTION
WORDS initially, and keeps the vocabulary
load low.

Suggestopaedia

a METHOD of foreign-language teaching

developed by the Bulgarian educator,
Lozanov in the 1970s. It makes use of
dialogues, situations, and translation to
present and practise language, and in
particular, makes use of music, childlike
attitudes, visual images, and relaxation
exercises to make learning more comfortable
and effectiveand to facilitate retention.
Peripherical learning is essential, transaltions
and errors are permitted. The teacher is in
complete control in an authoritarian way.

the Natural Approach

In the approach to second language

acquisition, the focus is on communication
rather than on fluency. It is a very low anxiety
approach because the teacher does not focus
on form but rather on meaning. Speech
emerges naturally and is not forced. Students
are given time to listen. Errors are accepted
as natural and corrections are done through
modeling. Curriculum consists of
communicative goals. Activities are designed
so as to lower student anxiety. Krashen and
Terrel 1980s

The Communicative Language Teaching

(1980s) broad approach to language teaching

that encompasses various methods such as
Interactive, Learner-centred, cooperative,
content-based, task-based Learning, PPP,
TTT. Historically, CLT has been seen as a
response to the audio-lingual method (ALM),
and as an extension or development of the
notional-functional syllabus.
Wide use of authentic texts, focus on
interaction in the TL, the Ss focus on the
learning process.
