Control Line Vintage Stunt 2010

The document proposes new rules for vintage control line stunt competitions to increase interest and entries. It separates competitors into Stylists and Tyros based on experience and has two lists of approved vintage aircraft models. The goals are to make the competition more accessible and fun while honoring the heritage of vintage aircraft designs. The new rules will be trialed at three competitions in 2010 hosted by different clubs.

CONTROL LINE VINTAGE STUNT 2010

A NEW APPROACH FROM BRIAN LEVER

PETERBOROUGH MODEL FLYING CLUB

Since the heyday of C/L Vintage Stunt in the 1990’s when the Peterborough Cabbage Patch
Nationals would regularly host some 60+ competitors between Vintage, British Nostalgia, Bi-plane
and 0.8cc Stunt, there has been a steady decline in entries with perhaps the exception being the
CLAPA Championships. Certainly the average Sport Vintage Aerobatic Pilot has declined in
significant numbers since the year 2000. With such a rich heritage of both models and engines
designed for C/L aerobatics up to December 1952, I felt we should attempt to revitalise the event
with new ideas (or reinstate certain old ones) in an attempt to increase the number of aeromodellers
enjoying this wonderful branch of Control Line model aircraft.

Please note these proposals do not affect existing Vintage Stunt competitions as they are designed
to Peterborough Model Flying Club rules for which at least three specific competitions will be
organised in 2010. However, if organisers of other Vintage Stunt competitions would like to adapt
these proposals they are free to do so.

A number of main aims were agreed for the new competition:-

a) Increase the interest, number of entries and fun back into the event.
b) In order to increase the chances of success for every entrant, separate flyers into two
main categories –

i) THE STYLISTS – Anyone placing in a Vintage Stunt competition in the last three
years flying to the SAM35 Schedule.
ii) THE TYROS – Anyone not placing in a Vintage Stunt competition in the last three
years flying the SAM35 Schedule.

c) Draw up two lists of suitable Vintage C/L aerobatic designs, namely Vintage List I and
Vintage List II. The lists while not exhaustive provide a greater degree of “level playing
field” for respective models and modellers, thus once again opening up the choice of
designs to build. Vintage List I contains many of the most competitive models while
Vintage List II contains a huge variety of aircraft with varying degrees of competence. I’m
sure there will be some debate about my choice of models for each respective list, but for
the first season I intend not to change the lists and reserve the right to place any new
suggestions for additional designs into the list of my choice.
d) Whether you are a “Stylist” or “Tyro” you may build models for the 2010 season from both
lists. However when it comes to the competitions, you will only be judged with whatever
model you are flying against the same category of flyer as yourself i.e. ”Stylist” or “Tyro”.
e) Prizes will be awarded for the first, second and third places for both “Stylists” and “Tyros”
with Certificates for all other places down to 10th. It is thus possible for keen entrants to
fly multiple entries from both lists and be amongst the winners in their respective
category of flyer. We do hope this idea will help both “Stylists” and “Tyros” to dust off the
building board, make some new models and create a real buzz for the 2010 season.
f) Events will be run at the SAM35 meeting at Barkston Heath on 29-30th May 2010 and
also at the SAM35 Gala at Old Warden on 26-27th June 2010. The date and venue for
the third event for 2010 is expected to be at Peterborough with the exact venue and date
to be decided.
g) Sponsorship has been arranged to provide prizes and certificates for all the 2010
meetings.
h) To add further interest to the competition, the following rules will apply:-

1) Models to fly the current SAM35 Vintage Schedule and be scored accordingly.

2) Contestants will have a maximum of 10 minutes to fly the round, including

one minute for pilot to start the engine.

3) Each contest will consist of 2 rounds, the combined scores to count.

4) All models will be pull-tested to BMFA Rules.

5) Additional points can be gained as follows :-

a)
Model Year Points
Models up to and including 1947 25
1948 20
1949 15
1950 10
1951 5
1952 2

Only dates shown on the respective Vintage Plan lists I and II or agreed to be added to the
lists by Brian Lever, will be used for scoring the above points.

b) Concours

Judged for build/covering/finish/extras

Moulton’s engine encyclopedia, published in March 1958. Any motors

“Stylists” and “Tyros” with models from List II. 1st, 2nd and 3rd places will receive trophies
and wine. 4th – 10th places will receive certificates.

At the end of the 3rd competition, highest cumulative scores from all 3 competitions will be
awarded:-

1st “Tyro” Plan List I - £25
1st “Stylist” Plan List II - £25
1st “Tyro” Plan List II - £25

This will be additional to trophies, wine and certificates.

If we have some success with improved entries for the new competition for 2010, I shall review the
year and continue the competition into 2011 and beyond.

Details of plans availability can be obtained from Brian Lever.

I do hope the ideas meet with your general approval. If they do, please build/dust off/renovate
that model for the 2010 season and let’s see some great turnouts of these wonderful stunt models
from yesteryear. It would be helpful if you would email or write to me with details of your name,
“Stylist” or “Tyro” category, and model(s) you intend to build and fly for this new competition in 2010
to enable me judge interest.

Good luck with your building and keep me up-to-date with your projects.
