QUESTION 1
(P01,C01,C1,C3)
a) Distinguish between intensive and extensive properties in thermodynamics.
(3 marks)
b) Identify which of the following thermodynamic properties are extensive and which are
intensive.
i)
A stress of 150 kPa
ii)
A velocity of 55 m/s
iii)
A kinetic energy of 62 kJ
iv)
A specific volume of 0.0001 m3/kg
v)
A mass of 92 kg
(5 marks)
c) A pressure cooker has the lid screwed on tight. A small opening of 5 mm2 is covered by
a petcock, as shown in Figure 1 below. The petcock can be lifted to allow the steam to
escape. Calculate the mass (g) of the petcock, if the water is boiled at 120C with an
outside atmosphere at 101.3 kPa. (Take the gravitational acceleration, g = 9.81 m/s2)

QUESTION 2
(P02, C02, C03, C3, C4)
Five kilograms of water is stored as a saturated liquid-vapour mixture in a piston cylinder at
100 kPa. Two kilograms of the water is initially in the liquid phase and the piston rests on a
set of stops as shown in the Figure 2 below. Heat is now transferred to the water and the
piston starts to move when the pressure reaches 230 kPa. The addition of heat continues
until the total volume increases by 20%.

Water

Q

a) Determine both the initial and final temperatures of the water.

(15 marks)
b) Calculate the mass of liquid water when the piston first starts moving.
(2 marks)
c) Sketch the process with respect to saturation lines, on a T-v diagram. Show the pressure
isotherms and both initial and final temperatures clearly.
(5 marks)
d) Determine the work done during the process.
(3 marks)
QUESTION 3
(P02, C03, C3, C4)
A well-insuiated chamber. Volume of the chamber is 1 ft3 is shown in Figure 3. Initially, the
chamber contains air with pressure of 14.7 lbf/in.2 and at temperature of 100F. Connected
to the chamber are supply and discharge pipes, equipped with valves that control the flow
rates into and out of the chamber. The supply air pressure is 30 lbf/in.2 and temperature at
200F. Both valves are opened simultaneously, allowing air to flow with an equal mass flow
rate through each valve. The air within the chamber is well mixed, so the temperature and

be taken as uniform throughout.

Neglecting kinetic and potential energy effects, and using the ideal gas model with constant
specific heats for the air,

a) Using the mass and energy balance equation, prove that the relation between
temperature (T) and time (t) can be expressed as following.

r(0=(r,-rj P

\m<j

Where
Ti= initial temperature in a chamber
T1=inlet gas temperature
T(t)= gas temperature in a chamber at time t
(22 marks)

b) Plot the temperature (F) versus time, of the air in the chamber for mass flow rate of air
supply is 5 Ib/min and time between 0 to 5 second.

QUESTION 4

(P02, C04, C2, C4)

A vapor power plant is a power plant in which the prime mover is steam driven. Water is
heated, turns into steam and spins a steam turbine which drives an electrical generator.
After it passes through the turbine, the steam is condensed in a condenser and recycled to
where it was heated. Figure 4 gives the schematic of a vapor power plant in which water

steadily circulates through the four components shown. The water flows through the boiler
and condenser at constant pressure and through the turbine and pump adiabatically. Kinetic
and potential energy effects can be ignored. Process data follow:
Process 4 - 1 : constant-pressure at 1 MPa from saturated liquid to saturated vapor
Process 2-3: constant-pressure at 20 kPa from x2 = 0. 88 to x3 = 0.18
a) Determine the thermal efficiency using data from steam table.
(13 marks)
b) Compare the result of part (b) with the Carnot efficiency calculated using boiler and
condenser temperatures and comment.

QUESTION 5
(P02, COS, C4)
The Manjung Power Plant was constructed on a man-made reclaimed island off the cost of
Perak, which is close to the tourist island of Pangkor. Table 1 provides the plant's steadystate operating data and Figure 5 shows the schematic diagram of the plant. The plant uses
water as the working fluid that flows at a rate of 1200 kg/s. The turbine and pump operate
adiabatically but not reversibly. From data given, determine:
a) Draw P-v diagram at this point
(3 marks)
b) The thermal efficiency.
