Coursework Outline

This document provides the design of a reinforced concrete beam B1-B2 according to EC2. It includes calculations of loads, analysis of bending moments and shear forces, and design of the beam for flexure and shear. For flexural design, tension reinforcement of 2064 mm2 of R8 bars is required. Shear links of H8 bars spaced at 300mm are sufficient to resist the design shear force of 1570 kN. Deflection criteria are also satisfied. In summary, this document outlines the full design process of a reinforced concrete beam under given loading and code specifications.

Task: Design a reinforced concrete beam B1-B2 to

EC2. Determine the loading on beam B1-B2 and
then design a reinforced concrete member of
suitable size and shape, with appropriate
configuration of longitundinal reinforcement and
links.

Design moments and shears can be derived using

elastic analysis and also taking in account that the
moment at the support will not be zero. This is
because the support is not pinned and is not entirely
fixed. Therefore an assumption is made that the
moment at the support is taken at a 1/4 of the
maximum bending moment.

Flexural Design
The effective flange width beff for a T beam may be
derived as:
beff = bw + 2(0.2b1 + 0.1l) < 0.2l

Deflection
Span/Depth ratio = 5000/380 =13
This is one less than the recommended ratio, but the
value is not greater than the recommeded value
making the beam too slender therefore I accept that
the beam will avoid deflection problems.
