This document discusses several branches of statistics including biostatistics, environmental statistics, econometrics, quality control, and demography. It then provides a brief history of the term "statistics", noting that it originated from the Latin word for "state" and was initially used by rulers and governments to gather information about lands, populations, and other aspects of ruling. The document outlines how statistics has developed and changed over time from its initial governmental uses to the modern field that applies statistical analysis across many domains and makes use of electronic computers.
