The first passage is about how mobile phones have changed our ability to disconnect and find privacy. It notes that in the past people could go to lunch without answering calls, but now mobile phones allow people to contact you anytime through calls or text messages. The second passage provides instructions for installing and operating a cordless phone. It describes plugging the phone cable into the wall mount, inserting the battery, placing the receiver on the base, and dialing a number to connect the phone. It notes the phone is operated similarly to a conventional landline phone but has a retractable aerial.

Olimpiada de limba engleza

Faza locala- clasa a 9-a, 2009-2010

I Fill in the gaps using one word only:

HOW MOBILE PHONES TURN US INTO FUGITIVES
I remember it well. 0) There was a time in the past when I 1) .. go to lunch without having to
answer calls 2) .. my boss, my wife, my children and my bank manager. There used to be a
time when notions 3) .. as peace and privacy actually had a literal meaning. And there was
someone that you didnt want to speak to, never mind the reasons, you had the freedom not to 4)
.. Excuses were easy: I was out, I was sleeping, the phone was off the hook, and so on. Its all
changed now. None of those old defences work. The callers simply come back at you with
something like but didnt you see my unanswered call on your mobile? 5) . about the very
phrase for a moment: to see ones unanswered call. No running 6) . from it, folks; youd have
to be deaf and blind to be able to sit on that old park bench. And even then, if youve got one of
those mobile phones 7) .. have vibration alert, you could still be in for some trouble. Im not a
technophobe, Im really not. Its just that Ive been shown to be tragically wrong about this one. I
once 8) .. Its just a fad- it will go away. That was eight years 9) . , and the people that
walked around the streets talking away on those devices were few and far away and looked
ridiculous. Now, its the other way around. 10) .. you dont have a mobile phone, youre the
odd one out, and others look at you as though youre walking around without any trousers.
