January/February 2015
The Man from Macedonia was a Woman:
About 15 months ago, I was meditating on Acts 16:6-15. This
passage was about Pauls missionary journey that included
his unexpected trip to Macedonia. I was struck by the part
where Christs Spirit prevented them from going where they
had gone before. I longed for the days when I could return to
the ministry of yesterday. The people were familiar and the
service was clear. Like Paul and his companions, I got to
Troas. This port city was the end of anything familiar. It
represented a crisis. Where do I go when I get to the end of
my knowledge? The answer is go to my knees. Like Paul, I
was called to cross the ocean of uncertainty and place my
whole faith in the One whose plan is greater than anything I
could think of on my own.
Paul had a vision and obeyed. God used the Scouting
Ministry of the United Methodist Men to call me to
something greater. God was going to use Scouting in Cote
dIvoire to unify an entire nations United Methodist youth
ministry.
When Paul arrived he found the Man from Macedonia was
Lydia. When I arrived in Cote dIvoire, the first Scout I met
was a teenage girl. She tracked me down at a training
conference with one request: Please give us training on how
to study the Bible and teach what we learn to others.

Scouting Ministry News

On 14 January 2015, Bishop Boni declared to the gathered leadership that the
Scouts and the Boys and Girls Brigades would work together for United
Methodist Scouting in the Cote dIvoire Church. After the worship service, the
heads of the United Methodists Scouts in Cote dIvoire, the National leader for
the Boys and Girls Brigade, and I gathered together to begin introductions and
a broad understanding of how we would do it.

The tentative plan is to create a Discipleship award known as Le Prix

du Cheminement (Pathways Award) with three journeys, including:
a spiritual formation journey, an evangelism journey, and a mission
engagement journey. Adults will also earn a Scouting Ministry
Specialist award.
This whole process is an opportunity for separate youth serving
agencies to come together for discipleship. The Conference here is
over 1.2 million strong, with a goal of 100 new churches this year.
They only have 190 trained pastors in the country. I truly believe
that this ministry can become the launching point for many youth
and young adults to explore their call to ministry.
We have been given permission to begin our shared ministry in the
United Methodist School system. This gives us immediate access to
over 18,000 children and youth.
The Tentative Goals: The youth will learn the Christian faith through
a Wesleyan perspective and will be able to communicate that faith
to their friends and family. They will then work together as
missionaries in their own country. They will educate peers against
Ebola and Malaria. They will distribute nets. They will educate
about clean water and partner with American Scouting units to
provide water filters for villages. They will promote the peace in
advance of this years National elections. In short, they will strive
for both social justice and personal holiness.

Childrens Ministry News

At the time of the writing of this newsletter, the Childrens Ministry Trainer
position with the United Methodist Church of Cote dIvoire is pending Global
Ministries Cabinet approval. This article is dedicated to explaining how Cheryl
arrived at this point in her answer to the call of Missions.
The best place to begin is with Gods Prevenient Grace. Before we had a clue,
God had a plan. Cheryls heart is with the children she teaches. She has
worked hard at getting trained to serve with excellence. When I
answered the call to serve, the Church discovered Cheryls skillset.
The partnership between the receiving annual conference and the

adding a position. The receiving conference formally requested the
position.
