Professional Experience
Technical Assistant, CompanyXYZ (www.xyz.com)
August 2001 – September 2003
In my summer break from university this year I returned to CompanyXYZ where I was involved in
the creation of several in house intranet sites. Previous work within the company was in the
technical department where I repaired a range of notebook computers.
Brief description of my role within the company:
?? Designed, implemented, and installed an online database named ‘XYZ System’. Written in ASP
and HTML with a Microsoft Access backend database, it ran on the company’s intranet site. The
system allowed users to enter products into the database with the use of a barcode scanner.
The system also included:
o User login
o Security logs and error checking
o User tracking and User management
o Search facilities

?? Created a Knowledge Base System for the company. This was a database running on the
company’s intranet written in ASP/HTML which allowed users to search the database for
information on any aspect of the company. The system included security logs and user login.
?? Helped to ensure the company’s websites were fully up to date. This mainly included updating
current pages on the websites. http://www.xyz.com and http://www.project123.com.
?? Diagnose source of faults and repaired or order new parts for later repair of a large range of
notebook computers.
?? Removed faulty hardware and fitted new components and re-imaged hard disk drives and
installed any hardware drivers and software necessary.
?? Full testing of machines using a variety of methods and test programs once repairs had been
completed.
Application Developer, ABC UK Ltd (www.abc.co.uk)
August 2000 - February 2001
In August 2000, I received four days training organised through ABC Enterprise with an independent
teacher in writing HTML and ASP. We also spent time discussing general aspects of the Internet.
Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties the company was forced to make myself and others in the
company redundant.
Brief description of my role within the company:
?? Combined HTML, ASP and JavaScript, with a backend database being MySQL running on a
powerful SGI Challenge XL to produce dynamic web applications.
?? Helped build, install software and maintain server computers in the company’s own secure air-
conditioned data centre. Helped plan and lay around 1 kilometre of cable under the raised metal
floor in the data centre.
?? Designed and wrote small programs in Visual Basic to automate tasks within Microsoft Word
and Excel for others and myself.
?? Made presentations to clients about the software our team had designed.
?? Visited large companies and a school for onsite maintenance of computer systems and
installation of new software and hardware. Discussing with members of staff what measures had
been taken and how to operate new changes.
?? Helped carry out general maintenance of office computers and other peripheral devices.
?? Dealt with support issues on the phone, via e-mail and in person. Mainly dealing with problems
concerning hosting accounts and domain name registration.
Personal Qualities and Transferable Skills
Problem solving skills
When writing applications many problems can occur. Recently I have had to overcome various
security issues when creating an online invoicing system. By applying logical thought throughout the
process I was able to overcome all of these problems. It is challenges like this that appeal to me.
Also my problem solving skills were continuously assessed in my first year of university. In my
programming unit we were given a different problem to solve every week. I was one of the few
people to gain a 100% grade.
Reliability
As I was working at CompanyXYZ for only 3 months over this summer, I had to work to deadlines to
ensure all projects that I was involved in were completed before I returned to university. I fully
completed all my work before I left the company.
Teamwork
I am currently working with a group of colleagues to produce a group presentation in one of my units
at university. It is important to work well in the team, as it will affect the group’s final grade if we do
not work well together.
Communication skills
When designing and installing the XYZ System and Knowledge Base System at CompanyXYZ, I
regularly had meetings with the Technical Director of the company to discuss design issues. I also
had to present the system to co-workers and show them how to operate it.
Personal Statement
I am now looking to build upon my experiences in the computing industry, especially in the field of
web development, networking, mobile applications, e-commerce and new and rising technologies.
My enthusiasm for computing and the ability to learn new skills quickly make me a useful member of
a modern company on the cutting edge of Internet technologies. I would appreciate the opportunity
of an interview to discuss how I may be of benefit to your organisation.
