Edge To
Flange
The purpose is to leave the bounded flange connected, if it exists, and clear
material just inside the bounded flange, while leaving the bounded web attached
to the bounding edge if there is any overlap. If the overlap is insufficient for the
default feature, the answer is not applicable and no feature should be placed. If
there is no flange, it should behave like Edge To Outside.
Edge To

SECTION 4
Chamfers
A chamfer object is a plate-edge bevel that is added to properly trim the plate. Chamfers are
created when plates are detailed in the Structural Detailing task. A chamfer is placed
automatically by the assembly connection, based on the thickness difference of two connected
plate parts. In general, the chamfer is determined only by the geometry, and the user does not
change the result.
Chamfers can be single-sided or double-sided, and apply to both edge-to-edge (butt)
connections, and edge-to-face (tee) connections.
Chamfer selection at the assembly connection level also provides information used by welds in
physical connections, including the welding type. For more information, see Physical
Connections (on page 279).

SECTION 5
Brackets
Bracket types are based on the number of supports and the attachment method (trimmed or
lapped). A bracket can also contain an edge reinforcement, a buckling stiffener, or a flange.
Bracket symbols are delivered in two locations:
Brackets can be trimmed or lapped to one or both supports, as shown in the following examples.
Brackets can be trimmed or lapped to supports in any combination, as shown in the following
examples.
123
Brackets
Brackets can be trimmed or lapped to support 1 and support 2, but are trimmed to support 3 and
support 4, as shown in the following examples.
Bracket Flanges
124
Brackets
Placement
Brackets are placed several ways:
As major brackets aligned with reference planes in the Molded Forms task.
As major tripping brackets aligned with supports in the Molded Forms task.
As bracket parts aligned with reference planes in the Structural Detailing task. Placement of
detailing brackets may be automated in the assembly connection rules.

126
SECTION 6
Slot Selection
The slot selection can be controlled by the method that is used to plan the assembly. If the plate
is dropped onto a profile, the slot can be opened to a particular angle. This can be set directly
from planning data.
The following describes the selection process at the Root Slot level:
If the assembly method is Drop, SlotC and SlotA are available. If profile cross section type
is BULTL2 or BUT, SlotC2 is also available.
If the assembly method is Slide, SlotC and SlotI are available. If profile cross section type is
BUTL2 or BUT, SlotC2 is also available. SlotI is available only when the profile is
perpendicular to the base plate.
The result of the root selection is a child sub-selection. Each of the sub-selection types are
described in the following sections.
The delivered reference data does not provide data to allow slot selection to be set from
Planning data. The selection is controlled by the user. The default is set to Drop, and you must
set this at the assembly connection level. You can customize the reference data to allow slot
selection from Planning data.

If the bounding axis is more orthogonal to the flange than the flange, the flange is penetrated
and the web is non-penetrated:
205
1 - Top of web
2 - Bottom of web
3 - Bounded member
4 - Bounding member
Flange cut symbols are always drawn with the left flange above and the right flange below, and
the bounded part to the right and the bounding part to the left.
206
1 - Top flange
4 - Top edge
2 - Web
5 - Face
3 - Bottom flange
6 - Bottom edge
Composite Cuts
Penetrated end cuts follow multiple surfaces of the bounding member and contain up to three
individual cuts: a center cut, a top cut, and a bottom cut. The individual cuts are combined to
form composite cuts, as shown below.
A center cut is always applied. If needed, a top cut is applied to provide additional shape to the
top, web-penetrated region or the left, flange-penetrated region of the member. A bottom cut can
also be applied to provide additional shape to the bottom, web-penetrated region or the right,
flange-penetrated region of the member.
Non-penetrated end cuts consist of a single cut with one bounding surface.

SECTION 13
Most advanced plate systems are used with standard and built-up members created with Place
Linear Member
in the Molded Forms or Structure tasks. Member flanges and webs are
trimmed (rebounded) and connected to the advanced plate system. As an example, when an
advanced plate system is inserted along the length of a standard (non-built-up) member,
typically on the flange, the penetration connection is created between the standard member and
the advanced plate system.
All connections and penetration seams are automatically created when the plate is detailed
using Execute Detailing
When an existing member is modified, connections and trimming are modified by selecting a
port and using the Modify Member Generic Assembly Connection ribbon in the Molded
Forms and Structural Detailing tasks.

271
Side Plates
A side plate joins the flanges or webs of a set of incoming members sharing a nodal connection,
as shown in green in the example below.
It can also be created axially on a supported member at its nodal connection with a supporting
member, as shown in green in the example below.
The physical axes of the members are end-point connected and coplanar. The common end
point is the nodal point. At least two members with non-collinear axes are necessary. The
incoming flange and web plate parts are trimmed. For built-up members, the incoming flange
and web parts are trimmed by the edges of the side plate.
272
Ring Plates
A ring plate joins the flanges or webs of a set of incoming members sharing a nodal connection.
It is penetrated by a perpendicular cylindrical member, as shown in green in the examples
below.
The physical axes of the incoming members are end-point connected and coplanar. The
common end point is the nodal point. The axis of the perpendicular member traverses the nodal
point. A ring plate can be defined by a single incoming member and the perpendicular member.
The incoming flange and web plate parts are trimmed. For built-up members, the incoming
flange and web parts are trimmed by the edges of the ring plate.
Continuity Plates
A continuity plate extends the web or flange of an incoming member that has a nodal
connection, until it reaches a plate (a transition plate, a continuity plate, or a regular plate
system). It is bounded by two side plates, ring plates, or insert plates, as shown in green in the
example below.
273
Transition Plates
A transition plate joins the webs or flanges of two opposite members sharing in a nodal
connection and is bounded by two side plates, ring plates, or insert plates, as shown in green in
the example below.
A transition plate can also join differing profile systems of differing dimensions, as shown in
green in the example below.
274
Buckling Plates
A buckling plate stiffens the web and flange of a member. It can be positioned by and bounded
to plates sharing a nodal connection with the member or it can be defined by dimensions.
If you specify only one continuity plate, then the buckling plate is positioned where the
continuity plate intersects the first transition plate. In the example below, the continuity plate
is yellow, and the buckling plate is green.
If you specify two continuity plates, then the buckling plate is positioned between the
intersection of the first continuity plate and the first transition plate, and the intersection of
the second continuity plate and the second transition plate. In the example below, the
continuity plates are yellow, and the buckling plate is green.
If you specify dimensions, then the buckling plate can be on one or both sides of the
member and have full or partial height, as shown in green in the example below.
275
For a tubular or boxed member, you specify the distance from the start node, as shown in
green in the examples below.
Brackets
A bracket stiffens profile stiffeners and a supporting plate. The bracket can be knuckled when
the webs of the profiles are not coplanar, as shown at the red line in the example below.
276
Insert Plates
An insert plate replaces the flanges of a set of:
Intersecting members
The member flanges are trimmed to the insert plate, and connections are created between the
insert plate and the member.

SECTION 14
Physical Connections
Physical connection objects add weld information. They are created when plates and profiles
are detailed in the Structural Detailing task. A physical connection is placed automatically by the
assembly connection, based on the geometry of the two objects being welded and on a series of
questions that can be modified by the user. These questions can be accessed on the Selection
tab of the Physical Connection Properties dialog box in the Structural Detailing task of the
software.

SECTION 15
Molded Conventions
Molded conventions define structural alignment for plates and profiles. They are bulkloaded into
the catalog and available on the Molded Conventions tab of the Properties dialog boxes for
plate and profile systems.
The following default molded conventions are used in the marine library catalog. You can
customize default values decks, longitudinal bulkheads, and transverse bulkheads, but you
cannot modify the default values for the hull as they are set by the software.
