Winning the hearts and the hands of the caring:

Each in her chosen path,

Each with a special gift,
Take their stand
To create a world more fit for living,
More just and more humane.

Quotes for Reflection:

And you, Jesus, good Lord, are you not also Mother?
Would a mother not be the one who, like a hen,
gathers her young beneath her wings?
Lord, you are my Mother!
Anselm of Canterbury, 11th cent.

Brother, Sister, Let Me Serve You

CALL TO WORSHIP
Safiyah Fosua
Jesus asked, Who is my mother and who are my brothers and
sisters? Look around you, and you will see them.
They are not always the people we grew up with.
They are the people who have joined the journey
to learn more about God and the ways of God's people.
They are the people who risk reputation and wealth,
convenience and ease- for the sake of the gospel.
They are the people who pray through the night
for someone else's child or someone else's loved one.
They are the ones who offer themselves to those considered
outcast, who live on the bottom or on the margins.
Who are my brothers; who are my sisters; where is my family?
Jesus said that whoever does the will of God is my brother and
sister and mother.
Welcome to worship, family!
We gather to worship the God who has made us kin!

Holy Breathing of God,

I feel you stirring.
Warmed by this breath good things start to grow.

Fresh, mobilizing calls evoke planetary piety,

ANCIENT PRAYER
St. Catherine of Siena 14th cent.
You are a fire burning but never consuming.
You are a fire consuming in your heat
all the souls selfish love.
You are a fire lifting all chill and giving light.
In your light You have made me know your truth.
You are that light beyond all light
who gives the minds eye supernatural light,
in such fullness and perfection
that You bring clarity to the light of faith.
In that faith I see that my soul has life,
and in that light receives You who are Light.

Psalm 138

EPISTLE
2 Corinthians 4:5-12
For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord
and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. For it is the God who
said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts
to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of
Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be
made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does
not come from us.
We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not
driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but
not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that
the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we
live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus sake, so that the
life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at
work in us, but life in you.
GOSPEL
Mark 3:19b-35
Then he went home; and the crowd came together again, so that they
could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to
restrain him, for people were saying, He has gone out of his mind.
And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, He has
Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.

And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, How can
Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that
kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that
house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against
himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But
no one can enter a strong mans house and plunder his property
without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be
plundered.
Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever
blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy
Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin for
they had said, He has an unclean spirit.
Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they
sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they
said to him, Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside,
asking for you. And he replied, Who are my mother and my
brothers? And looking at those who sat around him, he said, Here
are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my
brother and sister and mother.
