Rules of Thumb - Structural Engineering Other Technical Topics FAQ - Eng-Tips

The document provides rules of thumb and guidance for preliminary structural design. It includes recommendations for estimating the cost of reinforced concrete, beam spans and depths, sizing of beams, and estimating earthquake loads. However, it notes that rules of thumb vary and engineers should verify structural elements through detailed design, as many factors can influence actual loads, deflections, and performance.
