his article is based on the


application of basic Jyotish
principles which we all know.
A short summary of used concepts is
given here for ready reference. We all
know that there are 12 signs and 9
planets in Jyotish.
Each sign has a lord and they are:
Mesha

Vrishabh

Mithun

Mangal

Shukr

Budh

Kark

Simh

Kanya

Chandr

Ravi

Budh

Tula

Vrishchik

Dhanu

Shukr

Mangal/Ketu

Guru

Makar

Kumbh

Meen

Shani

Shani/ Rahu

Guru

Note that Rahu and Ketu are co-lords of


Kumbh and Vrishchik, respectively.

According to BPHS 32.34:


(1) Ravi, (2) Guru, (3) Mangal, (4) Chandr, (5) Guru, (6) Mangal, (7) Shukr, (8) Shani,
(9) Guru, (10) Budh, (11) Guru and (12) Shani are Karakas for the twelve houses.
Here there is no mention of Rahu/Ketu. However for the sake of completion, LalKitab provides Karakatwa of 6H to Ketu and Karakatwa of 12H to Rahu. Elaborated rules
are given in BPHS to decide the stronger of the two lords but it needs a complete
horoscope. In this article, we will derive the results of house lords placement in
general. So we cannot find stronger lord using those rules.
Now we also know that planets:
Guru, Budh, Shukr, Chandr, Ravi, Shani, Mangal, Rahu, Ketu are benefics in
decreasing order. First 4 are called benefics and the last 5 are called malefics. This
relative nature is based on Ashtakvarg Rekhas of individual planets. If total count is
more than 48 points the planet is benefic, below this the planet is considered malefic.
Rahu/Ketu are similar to Shani/Mangal (see lordship and Karakatwa given above) and
considered most malefic.
So we will take Shani/Mangal if we want to consider benefic lord/karaka and
Rahu/Ketu when malefic lord/karaka is needed.
Lastly, strength of planets is full in exaltation and decreases as we consider placement
in Mool-Trikon, Own sign, Friend, Neutral, Enemy and finally zero in debilitation and
combustion. Similarly planets in 10H, 7H, 4H, 1H, 11H, 8H, 5H, 2H, 12H, 9H, 6H and
3H are stronger in decreasing order. Refer to BPHS for further details like exaltation,
friends, enemy, debilitation signs, etc.
Now, the most important rule which we must always remember is:

To give benefic results, a benefic lord/karaka must be strong. Similarly, to give


malefic results, a malefic lord/karaka must be weak.
With this knowledge, it is now possible to understand the results of house placement
of any given planet. For derivation of standard results, we consider Kal-Purush-Kundali
as the standard chart where Lagna is in Mesh sign.
Let us find Sukh-Karak position for Guru.
Rule 1- Note the lordship of planet.
Guru is lord of Dhanu and Meen.
Rule 2- Note the house of relevant matter.
House for Sukh (happiness) is 4H.

Rule 3 - Note the signs in relevant house.


4H is Meen (from Dhanu) and Mithun (from Meen).
Rule 4 - Note the lordship of signs obtained in rule 3.
Lords are Guru and Budh.
Rule 5 - Choose the most benefic planet obtained in rule 4.
Here both are benefic.
Note: All planets can be seen and analyzed for results but they have slightly less degree of
intensity. This step can also be neglected.
Rule 6 - Note the Karak-houses of planets obtained in rule 5.
Guru is Karaka for 2H, 5H, 9H and 11H. Budh is Karaka for 10H.
Rule 7 - Choose the house with maximum possible strength obtained in rule 6.
In Kal-Purush-Kundali, these houses will join signs 2, 5, 9, 10 and 11 respectively.
Now Guru is strongest in 9 (Dhanu) being Mool-Trikon of Guru. So we take 9H
placement as Sukh-karak for houses owned by Guru.
In other words, when Guru is placed in 9H in a chart, he will give Sukh (happiness)
related to houses owned by him in the chart. We all know that Guru in 9H gives very
good results. Now you know why. Also we know what kind of results can be expected
from such placement.
It is possible that a single house may give various results. Sukh-karak Guru may also
become Karm-karak. We have to derive results for each house and finally prepare a
ready reckoner for deciding all types of results given by a planet in a particular house.
As an example we can say that for Vrishchik Lagna, Guru is exalted in 9H. Guru is
lord of 2H & 5H. Now, one can say that exalted Guru in 9H gives happiness from
children and family. The native will be satisfied with wealth!
The above result is valid only if there are no other influences on 2H & 5H/lord. All
the rules up to rule 6 are general and independent of any chart. For rule 7 we have used
Kal-Purush-Kundali because all rules must be validated by Kal (time). If some rule is
not sanctioned by Kal, how can it fructify?
Now, let us find Bhagya-karak position for Shukr.
From Vrishabh, 9H is makar lorded by Shani.
From Tula 9H is Mithun lorded by Budh.
Karaka houses are Shani (8H and 12H), Budh(10H).
For Shukr, sign 12 in 12H is exaltation.
So placement of Shukr in 12H is Bhagya-karak for the houses owned by Shukr.
Now if Shukr is placed in 8H or 10H, it still will give somewhat good results but best
results are in 12H. However, the dignity of planet in a house is also important. For

Tula Lagna, Shukr in 12H is debilitated but in 8H Shukr is in own sign. 8H placement
will be better than 12H in this case. Rule 7 thus modifies standardized positions to suit
individual charts.
We will now apply this method to find Maran-Karak-Sthan (MKS) of planets.
Nowadays people are attaching great importance to it but Sage Parashar has not even
mentioned MKS in BPHS. They can be derived very easily using above rules.
Marak houses are 2H & 7H. We are looking for malefic results so we take malefics
and use weak placements. Houses and signs are identical in Kal-Purush-Kundali. So
they are directly used in the examples.
1. For Ravi, Kanya and Kumbh are in Marak places from Simh. Budh and Rahu are
Marakesh. Rahu is most malefic. Rahu is Karak for 12H. MKS for Ravi is 12H.
2. For Chandr, Simh and Makar are in Marak places from Kark. Ravi and Shani are
Marakesh. Shani is most malefic. Shani is Karak for 8H. MKS for Chandr is 8H.
3. For Mangal, 2, 7 and 9 signs are in Marak places. Shukr and Guru are Marakesh.
Shukr is most malefic. Shukr is the Karak for 7H. MKS for Mangal is 7H.
4. For Budh, 4, 7, 9 and 12 signs are in Marak places. Chandr, Shukr and Guru are
Marakesh. Chandr is most malefic. Chandr is Karak for 4H. MKS for Budh is 4H.
5. For Guru, 1, 3, 6 and 10 signs are in Marak places. Mangal, Budh and Shani are
Marakesh. Mangal is most malefic. Mangal is Karak for 3H. MKS for Guru is 3H.
6. For Shukr, 1, 3 and 8 signs are in Marak places. Ketu, Mangal and Budh are Marakesh.
Ketu is most malefic. Ketu is Karak for 6H. MKS for Shukr is 6H.
7. For Shani, 4, 5, 11 and 12 signs are in Marak places. Chandr, Ravi, Guru and
Shani/Rahu are Marakesh. Here Shani/Rahu is not malefic so we choose Ravi. Ravi is
Karak for 1H. MKS for Shani is 1H.
8. For Rahu, 5 and 12 signs are in Marak places. Ravi and Guru are Marakesh. Guru is
most benefic. Guru is Karak for 2H, 5H, 9H & 11H. Rahu gets debilitated in 9H.
MKS for Rahu is 9th.
Note: We change malefics to benefics for nodes are they are Vakri (retrograde).

9. For Ketu, 2 and 9 signs are in Marak places. Shukr and Guru are Marakesh. Guru is
most benefic. Guru is Karak for 2H, 5H, 9H & 11H. Ketu gets debilitated in 2H.
MKS for Ketu is 2H.
Note: Here one can use all karakas and get the weakest house in a specific chart.
Panchdha Maitri should be used for this. Kal-Purush-Kundali is used for universal
results, individual results can vary but they can be determined through the application
of the basic rules given above.
