Justification On Selection of Materials

The document discusses the justification for selecting various teaching materials for a Year 2 English lesson. It describes using a diorama for the introduction to engage students' imaginations. A picture book was then used to help students link new vocabulary to pictures. Real objects like tickets were incorporated to make learning more memorable. For the production stage, students made stick puppets to encourage hands-on learning. The benefits of puppets in boosting brain activity and engagement are noted. In conclusion, quality teaching materials are important for helping young ESL students understand and retain new English vocabulary.

Justification on selection of materials

Teaching materials are defined as the things that teacher used in their teaching and
learning process in their classroom. Teaching materials or most commonly known as teaching
aids are the heart and soul in teaching and learning process. In primary ESL classroom teaching
materials are one of the key to a successful lesson. Primary school pupils especially level 1
pupils depend fully on teaching aid in order to construct their understanding. Therefore, the
teacher needs to know how to select good teaching materials for their pupils because an error in
selection and adaptation of particular materials can cause misconception and misunderstanding
on pupils capacity.
After a long discussion with my practicum mate, we have planned a lesson that
comprised the usage of variety of teaching materials for Year 2 pupils. The teaching aids have
evaluated based on the criteria of selection and adaptation of teaching and learning materials.
First of all, for the set induction part, we have introduced diorama to the pupils and they have to
give few responses based on that diorama. The main reason behind our choice to use diorama
in our lesson is that diorama is a visual material in the form of Three- dimensional aid. Pupils
are able to see the material. According to Mannan (2005), the visual materials support them in
that matter, as they serve as metal scaffolds for the students and help teachers to correlate and
coordinate accurate concepts making the learning more concrete (R. Garca Mara, 2012).
Therefore, it will surely help to empower pupils imagination about the lesson that they are going
to learn.
Children or young learners are more attracted to pictures rather than words. Our pupils are able
to link the story with the pictures they see in the pictures book and it cater their understanding of
new vocabularies in English which is not common to them. Pictures are one of the valuable aids
that bring images of reality into the unnatural world of the language classroom (Kateina
Joklov, 2009).The usage of visual aids in teaching literature creates strong engagement
between students and the texts (M. Md. Yunus, Hadi Salehi, D. Sigan, 2013). Nowadays, the
advancement of printing technology and Internet as the main resources to download available
picture have made things easier. It is easy for us to produce a picture book based on cheap
materials and it can be used for such a long time.
During stage 2 of the lesson, we have utilised a realia in the form of show ticket to impart
new vocabularies to the pupils. Realia or better known as real object material is one of best

teaching materials to facilitate learning of English as Second Language in primary classroom.

By using real object, pupils can touch the objects and the object can be seen by them. Students
understand and remember the meaning of the word better when they have touched the object it
represents (Azalina Yunus and H. Gaudart, 1996). The main advantage of using real objects
into the classroom is to make the learning experience more memorable for the learner. For
examples, if the teacher is going to teach vocabulary of fruit and vegetables it can be much
more affective for students if they can see the objects at the same time as hearing the new word
(N.O. Argawati,2009).
We have chosen stick puppet as our teaching materials for the production stage. At this
stage, the pupils are required to produce stick puppets using the stick and the printed paper
characters. Children like to complete this hands-on activity and for Year 2 pupils who basically
have short attention span, hands on activity can help them to focus on something. Hands-on
projects obviously engage kids who are tactile or kinesthetic learners, who need movement to
learn best. They also engage students who are auditory learners, who talk about what they're
doing, and visual learners, who have the opportunity to see what everyone else is creating
(Samantha Cleaver,2009).
Moreover, the benefit of using puppet to improve pupils understanding about particular
story cannot be denied. Research published in the Journal of Child Neurology and the Pediatric
Academy Societies (2002) showed, using sophisticated imaging technology, that the use of
puppets in play dramatically boosted blood and oxygen levels to the brain. The use of puppets
prepares the brain for learning and is a powerful motivator in learning (Sandra M. Reidmiller,
2008). The materials for making stick puppet are also cheaper compare to other types of puppet
and by considering the typical enrolment of pupils in Malaysian primary

classroom, the

materials will not cost much. Stick and printed paper characters are easy to be prepared and not
so expensive.
In conclusion, teaching and learning materials are crucial in primary ESL classroom.
Majority of children depends on visual and audio aids in learning something especially in
English lesson. English language is a strange language to the Malaysian primary pupils as a
result of little exposure to it. Therefore, they depend a lot on good materials to understand new
vocabulary in English language. In fact, good teaching materials can help their memory to retain
the new input that they have learnt throughout the lesson.
