Conference Strands
The dental and oral therapist/dental hygiene workforce in Australia is relatively small and has gradually
expanded from small numbers in public dental health services to increasingly larger numbers in both
the public and private sectors. Abstracts are invited from health professionals and researchers from all
disciplines and sectors that address theme 50 years of Dental Therapy Practice in Australia Celebrating achievements, challenges and diversity
Presentations on Indigenous health will be particularly welcome. Presenters of Indigenous health
research focusing on particular communities are to provide with their abstract an additional paragraph
outlining whether the relevant community/ies have provided permission to publicise the research
findings.

Abstracts should address one of the sub-themes:

Achievements, challenges and diversity of practice
Many policies outside of oral health influence the delivery of oral health care; how have these altered
over the last 50 years; how has the practice of dental therapists/oral health therapists/dental hygienists
altered service delivery and offered new models of care; what can and should we be doing to ensure
making healthier choices are easier and to ensure improved oral and general health for all?
Generating and using evidence to address, the challenges and possibilities
How do we make progress in oral health when there is uncertainty? How do we generate, gather and
integrate the evidence we need to take action? How do we continue to support growing evidence
between general health and oral health?
New opportunities, new technology - towards the future
We must learn from the past and plan for the future. Health advocacy requires leadership and there are
many examples of new leaders making a difference to public oral health. New technologies also provide
challenges and opportunities in oral health, so how do we use these efficiently and effectively?
As the associations of oral health and general health are more closely established how do we develop
inter-professional practice.
