LeakTestingisusedtodetectthroughleaksusingoneofthefourmajorLTtechniques:Bubble,
PressureChange,HalogenDiodeandMassSpectrometerTesting.
BubbleLeakTestingreliesonthevisualdetectionofagas(usuallyair)leakingfroma
pressurizedsystem;PressureChangeLeakTestingcanbeperformedonclosedsystemsonly
detectionofaleakisdonebyeitherpressurizingthesystemorpullingavacuumthen
monitoringthepressure.
PressureChangeTesting
PressureChangeTestingcanbeperformedonclosedsystemsonly.Detectionofaleakisdone
byeitherpressurizingthesystemorpullingavacuumthenmonitoringthepressure.Lossof
pressureorvacuumoverasetperiodoftimeindicatesthatthereisaleakinthesystem.
Changesintemperaturewithinthesystemcancausechangesinpressure,soreadingsmayhave
tobeadjustedaccordingly.
HalogenDiodeLeakTestingisdonebypressurizingasystemwithamixtureofairanda
halogenbasedtracergasafterasetperiodoftime,ahalogendiodedetectionunit,or
"sniffer",isusedtolocateleaks.
MassSpectrometerLeakTestingcanbedonebypressurizingthetestpartwithheliumora
helium/airmixturewithinatestchamberthensurveyingthesurfacesusingasniffer,which
sendsanairsamplebacktothespectrometer.

BubbleLeakTesting,asthenameimplies,reliesonthevisualdetectionofagas(usuallyair)
leakingfromapressurizedsystem.Smallpartscanbepressurizedandimmersedinatankof
liquidandlargervesselscanbepressurizedandinspectedbysprayingasoapsolutionthat
createsfinebubblestotheareabeingtested.Forflatsurfaces,thesoapsolutioncanbeapplied
tothesurfaceandavacuumboxcanbeusedtocreateanegativepressurefromtheinspection
side.Iftherearethroughleaks,bubbleswillform,showingthelocationoftheleak.

PressureChangeTesting
PressureChangeTestingcanbeperformedonclosedsystemsonly.Detectionofaleakisdone
byeitherpressurizingthesystemorpullingavacuumthenmonitoringthepressure.Lossof
pressureorvacuumoverasetperiodoftimeindicatesthatthereisaleakinthesystem.
Changesintemperaturewithinthesystemcancausechangesinpressure,soreadingsmayhave
tobeadjustedaccordingly.
HalogenDiodeTestingorHalogenDiodeLeakDetection(HDLD)
HalogenDiodeTestingisdonebypressurizingasystemwithamixtureofairandaHalogen
basedtracergas.Afterasetperiodoftime,ahalogendiodedetectionunit,or"sniffer",isused
tolocateleaks.
MassSpectrometerTestingorMassSpectrometerLeakDetection(MSLD)
MassSpectrometerTestingcanbedonebypressurizingthetestpartwithheliumoraHelium/
Airmixturewithinatestchamberthensurveyingthesurfacesusingasniffer,whichsendsanair
samplebacktothespectrometer.Anothertechniquecreatesavacuumwithinthetestchamber
sothatthegaswithinthepressurizedsystemisdrawnintothechamberthroughanyleaks.The
massspectrometeristhenusedtosamplethevacuumchamberandanyheliumpresentwillbe
ionized,makingverysmallamountsofheliumreadilydetectable.
