Peer Review Assignment

Introduction
Hi everyone, Im Sebastian Rios from Arequipa Peru and todays lesson is an assignment part of
the fifth week of the course Introduction to Music Production at Coursera.org. Id like to compare
and contrast an algorithmic and convolution reverb and also demonstrate the difference and the
important features in both types of reverb.
First of all, I want to tell you some things about what does reverb is. Well, reverb is a delayed
plug in. It gives us the sense of be in a space, the sense of be in a special environment. Reverb
gives a natural environment sense to the mix. Itll be like an audio collage, making it a more
exciting type of mix. When we use reverbs, were not trying to create a real space that everyones
in, but instead were just creating a beautiful sonic environment.
We can use reverb in really creative ways, and kind of put things in their own individual locations
just to isolate them form the mix. Reverb is another way to ride the listeners focus. Its isolated
and pulled out, and pulled from everything else in the mix.
A reverb is a complex plug in built from many delay blocks. When we use reverbs, were trying
to imagine what kind of space we would like to hear this music played in, and then choosing a
reverb that works with that will be great for the entire song.
Reverb ends up being of many elements in your mix. Adjusting the sound of the reverb can adjust
the sound of the entire mix, and also using a different reverb can make the mix sound bright or
dull, or empty or full. We have two types of reverbs: Algorithmic reverbs and Convolution reverbs.

Algorithmic Reverbs
An algorithmic reverb its created from some kind of formula. Kind of like a synthesizer creates
sound with a formula, and also like a synth uses a verse sampler. Were creating the impression
of space, with an algorithm.
Algorithmic reverbs offers us many more opportunities to manipulate the space, but it also wont
sound quite as real because its not a recording of a real space.
While working with the DAW, the most common interfaces of algorithmic reverbs are divided into
two separated components, which are the early reflections and the diffuse reverb.
Theres a pre-delay, theyre stereo controls, theres a room size tool, a reverb time and also a
high end. All of these vary about the plug ins author.
All the different parameters in a reverb are going to be related to this artificial space that were
trying to manipulate.

Algorithmic reverb, relies on your knowing the sound of real spaces, so we can emulate them.

Convolution Reverbs
Convolution reverbs are actually a recording of a real space applied to the sound that youre
currently using in the DAW.
Its like a sampler in that weve recorded the sound of a real space and were applying that in the
DAW.
Its going to sound more like a real space, but like a sampler youre limited in the type of
manipulations you can do to it.
