Course Description:
Intended primarily for students of the physical sciences, engineering, and mathematics.
An introduction to major ideas of single variable calculus including limits, derivatives,
and integrals of algebraic and transcendental functions; applications. (MATF)
PREREQUISITE: A grade of C or better in MATH 165, appropriate score on
mathematics assessment test, or consent of department. Assessment levels: ENGL
101/101A, READ 120. For computation of tuition, this course is equivalent to five
semester hours. Five hours each week. Formerly MA 181.
Textbook:
James Stewart, Calculus, Concepts and Contexts, 4th Edition, Brooks/ColeCengage
Publishing Company, 2010.

Calculator: One of these calculators (TI-83, TI-83 PLUS, TI-84, TI-84 PLUS) is
required. You are not permitted to use a TI-89, TI-92, or other equivalent calculators
containing computer algebra system capability

The exams (tests/final exam) are will be based on the class lecture notes,
WebAssign/online homework, and worksheets (some exercises from the textbook) that
will be posted on your course page: Blackboard.
Your mid-grade will be calculated based on your scores of Test 1, Test 2, HW#1, HW#2,
and that of all the quizzes which will be given on January 30, February 6, 13, 27 and
March 6.
One of the lowest scores of your quizzes will be dropped when I calculate your final
grade for the course.
If your final exam percentage score is at least 70%, then the following will apply: The
lowest percentage score of the first three tests (Test 1, Test 2, and Test 3) will be replaced
with the percentage score of your final exam if that improves your course grade. The final
exams percentage score will be used to replace only one lowest percentage score.
If the college is closed on an exam date, the exam will administered during the next
schedule class period if it is appropriate. Otherwise, information containing the
rescheduling of your exam will be sent through your Montgomery College email address
or through your course page: blackboard. So, please check your Montgomery email or
blackboard regularly.

Make up Policy: No make-up exams (tests/quizzes/final exam) will be given except

under extraordinary circumstances (a documented serious illness, death in the family or a
documented car accident, for example); when such circumstance arises, it is your
responsibility to contact me by e-mail on or before the date of the exam in order to
discuss the issue.
Attendance Policy: You are expected to attend the class regularly and fully (to come to
the class on time and leave the class on time). Attendance may be taken at the end of
every class. If you have to miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what you have
missed. Please ask one of your fellow classmates for what you missed. To study the
missed material, read the book and/or the lecture notes. Do not expect that during my
office hour I summarize for you what you missed in class.

exams planned on days classes are suspended will be administered at the first class
meeting once classes resume. Note that the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
and Montgomery College do not follow the same school closing procedures.

Delayed Opening or Closing of the College: On occasion, Montgomery College will

announce a late opening or early closing of a specific campus or the entire college
because of weather conditions or other emergencies.
If a class can meet for 50% or more of its regularly scheduled meeting time OR if the
class can meet for 50 minutes or more, it will meet. Montgomery College will always
operate on its regular schedule unless otherwise announced. Depending on the nature of

and be able to interpret each within the context of an applied problem.
5. Find a derivative directly from the definition of a derivative.
6. Interpret derivatives verbally in the context of an application.
7. Use first and second derivatives to obtain information about the graph of a function
and use the graph of a function to obtain information about its first and second
derivatives.
8. Identify and apply the appropriate rule(s) for symbolic differentiation.
9. Implicitly differentiate a function.
10.Use derivatives to determine the extreme values of a function.
11.Use derivatives to model and analyze a variety of applications, such as problems
involving optimization, related rates, and motion.

12.Interpret the definite integral as a limit of sums.
13.Interpret the indefinite integral as an inverse process of differentiation and evaluate
indefinite integrals.
