Museo Di Castelvecchio

Carlo Scarpa

Is a restoration project by Carlo Scarpa in a

medieval castle Located in Verona. It is expresses
the signature architecture of Scarpa down to the
details in Stairs, doorways, furnishings and fixtures.
He wanted to expose the differing layers of history
in the building with modern connections that
juxtapose the different periods of the buildings
development. The character of this building is reflective of the architectural
dream expressed in the projecting platforms in Giovanni Battista Piranesis
Carceri dinvenzioni (imaginary Prisons).
Materials:
Scarpa shows a clear interest in the vernacular
material and form of Verona. For example he uses
rough texture wall that has a round aggregate
emulating the character of historic walls from
Castelvecchio.

Detail:
Scarpa uses his virtuosity in detailing to create
simple and elegant separations between elements.
Forexample he uses a break in the stone paving
that aligns with the break in the concrete wall. He
also adds strips of bronze at ends of each section
of
paving.
He also uses large gates that evoke the character
of
the traditional buildings and buildings of venice.
Scarpa separates the old using reveal joints and spatial slots that function as
conceptual moats

Junctures:
Scarpa uses the juncture at which two points
meet, as an opportunity for detail and
expressing the nature of material. A simple
example is his resolving of a joint, he uses
and l shaped steel plate enfolds a rough
concrete wall, it was probably unneccesary,
just to protect the concrete. Yet a similar
detail adorns the two steps in the same area
and carried through the museum.

Scarpa elaborates a decorative system derived of modern

materials used in a craft tradition.
Collection of scultupre, statues, paitings, weapns,
ceramics, goldworks, miniatures and bells.

Aspen Art Museum

Shigeru Ban

Is based on transparency and open view plans inviting a relationship between

the interior and exterior.
The museum allows visitors to choose their own path through spaces, via:
A glass room elevator NE corner, goes to the roof to experience an unfolding
view of the mountain.
The grand stair on the east; a passageway between the woven faade and
interior structure. A glass wall divides it into a ten foot wide exterior space and a
six foot wide interior space.
This is a area that has that exterior interior relationship by having moving ar
platforms that bring a gallery to the outside.
The wooden screen; not only shades and cast light in the interior but reveals the
structure and gallery spaces.
Site specific sequence relating to the mountains and program as an art museum.
Foyer is on the roof, like a ski mountain you ascend the mountain, enjoying views
and then start.
