Ambassadors have come a long way

It was in the early 1980s and our young Big
Lake Chamber was branching out, trying new
ideas to add to the Spud Fest festival.
Among the new events coordinated during
that era were Spud Fest wrestling in mashed
potatoes and the potato pancake breakfast.
One event came and went, however, in a
short year. The Miss Big Lake Contest, which attracted three
young ladies, was held only in 1983, then not heard from
again for 10 years.
But the message of that first pageant was young Big Lake
ladies could achieve on stage - and win a scholarship. It needed to have educational advancement at its core.
That was the case for young Mary Kral, (now Mary
Swanson) who won a $500 scholarship and entered college
the following fall, helping her on to a professional career. The
funds for the scholarship came from the Big Lake Lions, who
coordinated Spud Fest.
I was one of the people involved in promotion of the first
Miss Big Lake Pageant.
It was wonderful to see how seriously our three young candidates took that pageant. They were intent to promote their
best self - and I believe had fun doing it.
That is indeed the theme for the ensuing Big Lake

enjoyment of others as they continue their young journeys
through life.
That spirituality has gotten the attention of the Minneapolis
Aquatennial Committee - and Big Lake representatives now
regularly attend the annual parade in Minneapolis.
Great visibility for a great program.
Were proud of all of them.
Tribune Staff Writer Jennifer Edwards recounts all the years
and faces of the Miss Big Lake contests in a feature within this
issue of the Big Lake Community Guide.
Enjoy the story and pictures and refresh your memory of
those who helped the program march along.
Jennifer has two other features within this Community
Guide - a sitdown with Dorothy Hinrichs and family about
Camp Cozy, a campground which was located on the north
end of Lake Mitchell, for many years in the middle of the last
century.
She has also compiled a story on efforts to market the
newest section of the Big Lake Industrial Park, owned and
operated by the City of Big Lake and Big Lake Twp.
Staff Writer Ken Francis has provided a feature on Big Lake
Schools Community Education and the growth it has experienced, reaching out to serve the community.
Were proud of their work and the support weve received
from area businesses and organizations to make this
Community Guide possible.

Ambassador program thriving

The Big Lake Ambassador Pageant is a
self-supporting program which gives
four young women a $500 scholarship
for college and the experience of a lifetime in exchange for representing Big
Lake to the world at large.
In addition to appearing in parades
and festivals all around the region, the
ambassadors put in hundreds of hours
of volunteer work, doing everything
from painting faces to calling bingo
numbers at the nursing home.
The program first started in 1983
when the Big Lake Civic and
Commercial Club, in conjunction with
organized Spud Fest, decided to hold a
Miss Spud Fest contest.
The pageant committee was chaired
by Deb Hansen and Louise Williams.
Three winners were chosen. Mary Kral,
daughter of Wes Kral and Dorothy
Fallon, was named the winner. Pamela
Stein was named first runner-up and
Cindi McConnell was named second
runner up.
Mary was sponsored by Citizen State
Bank, where she worked. Stein was
sponsored by Panayotoff Vegetable
Farm. McConnell was sponsored by the
businesses in the Big Lake Professional
Building.
Each Miss Spud Fest was judged on
their academic record, community service, an essay she wrote on the founding
fathers of Big Lake and on questions
asked by the judges, who were from the
winter carnival.
Although the contest was successful it
was more than 10 years before another
contest was held.
Miss Big Lake
In 1994, the organizers of Spud Fest
brought the program back and first-to
be-crowned was Amy Schnitzler and
Princesses were Joanna Adams and
Jennifer Lara. Jennifer Lindberg was
named most congenial.
In 1995 Angie Putnam was named the
new Miss Big Lake. Mikinzie Bichel and
Jenny Peterson were the Princesses and
Angel Kline won the title of Miss
Congeniality. Marie Moe wrote the winning essay and Becca Dean sold the
most Spud Fest buttons.
In 1996, Jaime Fish was crowned Miss
Big Lake. Her court included Princesses
Stacey Gail and Elizabeth Onstad. Amy
Westrum was named Miss Congeniality.
The 1996 royalty were selected from a
field of 19 candidates.
In 1997, Miss Big Lake was Tracy

Junior Ambassador are Madeline
Peterson and Ava Rain.
Corrigan. Princesses were Jolene Grace
and Valerie Olson. Allison Strand was
named Miss Congeniality. Matthew
Kowalski and Hannah Glelter, both
seven years old, were named Mr. and
Miss Sprout.
Crowned in 1998 were Marla
Weston, Crystal Brown, Triston Rose
and Shannon Simms. In 1999, they gave
up their crowns to Jodi Kendall, Nicole
Witowski, Amanda Heitz Holm and
Faith Pearson.
In 2000 April Springer won the crown
with Jessica Lanie, Stephanie Saxton
and Sarah Soule. In 2001 Laura Brandt,
Shannon Helps, Nikki Sims and Sheila
Urizar were crowned. Sheila was
named Most Congenial. Little Sprouts
that year were Katie Cocchiarella and
Tate Walquist.
The year 2002 saw Kari Kendall,
Tiffany Bodine, Brigitte Leininger and
Sarah LaPointe take the tiaras. Sarah
was Most Congenial and Joe
Cocchiarella and Nicole Kampa were
the little Sprouts.
Ambassador Contest
The contest changed over time as
public sentiment moved away from the
Princess model and became the Big
Lake Ambassador contest in 2003.
That was the year Sue Springer, who
worked hard behind the scenes to raise
funds, unveiled the new baked potato
float made of fiberglass with the butter
pat cushions which is still in use today.
It cost $12,000, said Springer.
There were donors but the girls did a
lot of the fund-raising themselves.
First to ride the float were Laurel
Gaynor, Brittany Hansen, Lindsay
Wolters (Most Congenial), and Brianna
Wojnowiak. Brittany Green and April
Harrison were named Junior Sprouts.

we have today.
The first Ambassadors crowned were

Sundeen

Ambassadors.
Alyssa Krueger (Sigafus), Samantha
Martin, Jamie Prettyman and Most

Big Lake Ambassadors in 2006.
In 2007 they gave up their crowns to
Alicia Anderson, Brittney Doperalski,
Sarah Oltmanns and Samantha Smith.
Megan Frazer and Megan Zinken were
named Junior Ambassadors.
In 2008 it was the turn of Megan
Abram, Julia Allen, Jackie Barker and
Samantha Phillippe to represent Big
Lake. Megan was Most Congenial. Skye
Davis and Emma Thompson were Junior
Ambassadors.
Dominique Boroski, Sara Hansen,
Corrie Scott and Brittah Springer were
crowned Ambassadors in 2009. Sara
was Most Congenial. Leah Andersen
and Emily Zinken were Junior
Ambassadors.
In 2010, Paige Liebl, Brianna Maciej,
Emily Muehlberg and Erin Whitacre
were crowned and Alexis Nau and Evi
Wandersee were named Junior
Ambassadors.
They gave up their crowns in 2011 to
Marijane Oquin and Hailey Uphoff.
Katie Forsman and Sabrina Thao were
also crowned but left the program
before completing their year. Ashlee
Ogren and Madison Thompson were

Crowned in 2012 were Sarah Impola, Ashley Schaefer,
Hannah Trocke (Most Congenial) and Samantha Young. Sierra
Strombach and Reagan Weyrauch were Junior Ambassadors.
2013 saw Autumn Clyde named Most Congenial. Emily
Hansen, Maddy Zinken and Bailey Jacobs were Ambassadors
but Jacobs did not last the year. Kaitlyn Smith and Lauryn
Yanta were the Juniors.
In 2014, Kailyn Johnson, Hailey Lahr and Samantha
Moench were crowned. Samantha was most Congenial
Kaitlyn Hart left the program and Madisen Fritel and Raina
White were the Junior Ambassadors.
The current reigning Ambassadors are Allison Bahe, Isabella
Rasmussen, Kayla Robertson and Caitlyn Shaw. Junior
Ambassador are Madeline Peterson and Ava Rain.
Just Beginning
To this day, candidates are still asked to sell buttons for
Spud Fest and write an essay. They are also asked to gather
food for the Big Lake Food Shelf.
When the young ladies win their tiaras, their work is just
beginning, not only for them but for their family members. It
is often the parents who step up to drive the float, get the girls
to where they need to be and chaperone them while they are
out on the road.
Although it is a not-for-profit organization and donations
are tax deductible, the Ambassadors and the Ambassador
candidates raise all the funds themselves through their annual spaghetti dinner, fashion show, car washes and other activities. They receive no outside support from the city, the Big
Lake Chamber or other organization except Spud Fest.

Even though the school year ends in
June, there is still plenty of activity going
on at Big Lake Schools.

Big Lake

Kids can be seen working out in the

weight room. Others are on the track,
in the gym or on the soccer fields, honing their skills for the next sports season. For the younger kids, the workouts
are introducing them to new sports and
activities.
There are also classes for adults, and
daycare for pre-school children.
Its all part of the Big Lake
Community Education program, which
has been offering programs and activities for kids and adults for almost 40
years.
Community Education (CE) began in
the 1930s in Flint, MI when two men,
Frank Manley and Charles Mott, questioned the logic of closing down
schools after regular school hours
ended.
The Mott Foundation helped start a
pilot project that made better use of the
school facilities. Classes and activities
for all ages were planned to help the
schools meet the needs of the community. The success of the project set the
stage for other communities throughout
the country.
Gov. Harold LeVander started a

statewide advisory committee in

Minnesota in 1969 and the first funding
for community education programs
was established in 1971.
Big Lakes Start
Community Education in the Big
Lake School District began in 1977
under the direction of Darrell Esterly,
then assistant principal of Big Lake
High School.
In December, 1977, Charlene Hayes
was hired as part-time director of CE to
develop a program for community
members to help them continue lifelong learning. Big Lake High School
Athletic Director Linda Anderson
worked alongside Hayes to assist with
activities.
In the early years, the Big Lake CE
Program was limited to the school year
and offered 10 to 15 recreational-style
classes and a few adult trips every
quarter. There were no summer classes.
That changed in the late 80s. Under
the joint direction of Supt. Bob Lageson
and part-time CE Director John
Haskell, the program grew.
Programs and activities were added
throughout the calendar year, including

St. Cloud YMCA and Becker
Community Education, pre-school and
after school care and, after the legislature approved funding, CE added
School Readiness.
In those early years, the state CE
assessed
program
Organization
strengths and weaknesses in order to
recommend changes. A review of the
Big Lake CE program revealed that it
needed a fulltime director. In the summer 1993, the school hired Rande
Gustafson to fill that position. He
served until 2007 when the school district restructured job responsibilities
and Brad Schnitzler was named CE
Director.
Over the past eight years, Schnitzler
says CE is continuing to expand and
evolve with the needs of the community. What is popular one year might not
be as interesting the next.
When personal computers came
out, computer classes were very popular. They have become less popular
because now with the internet, people
can learn more online, he says. If its
new technology, we get some interest
because its not out there yet. Not
everybody knows how to work with it

yet.
Online Programs
Computers still play a role in CE,
only at home instead of in the classroom.
A program called ed2go allows people to take six-week classes online at
home.
Its really starting to pick up, says
Schnitzler. Its mainly for adults. They
can go online and find any area course
they might be looking for.
The program started about seven
years ago, but it took awhile to catch
on. Now lots of people are taking classes in business, law, technology, design
and composition, healthcare, language
and college readiness.
Its getting more and more popular
because people can do it in the comfort of their own home on their own
time frame, says Teresa Scott, CE
Program Secretary. Well pick a few
popular classes and showcase them in
our brochure.
Three of those classes in this years
summer brochure were Secrets of
Better Photography, Genealogy Basics
and Write and Publish A Nonfiction
Book.

CE also offers a GED program for those 17 and over looking

to get their high school diploma; Basic Skills for help with
reading and writing and English as a Second Language.
And there are special classes and activities that CE offers
when someone has a different idea.
Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Boarding classes were offered this
summer as a new fitness activity. Combined with yoga, SUP
helps coordination, strength and balance.
Last year, CE offered a rain barrel-making class.
I thought it would be great for community education, so I
approached Big Lake and asked if they wanted to do the
class, says Master Gardener Kerry Hamlet, who taught the
class.
The barrels were donated by Viking Coca Cola and the
Master Gardeners purchased the adaptor kits. Under Hamlets
instruction, participants used drills and other tools to make
rain barrels for them to keep and use at home.
Schnitzler says CE is always looking for activities and classes that would be of interest to people in the community.
We try to keep with the times. We want to make sure we
always have new classes, he says.
Sometimes, there isnt much interest in the beginning, so
deciding whether to offer a class is difficult.
Ninety percent of the time well give it a try, as long as were
not losing a lot of dollars on it. I think thats a decision I
make, says Schnitzler. If it takes 10 people to break even
and we only have eight signed up, well give it a try. Its good
not only for community education, but for the school district.
Hamlets barrel-making class had 12 participants in its first
attempt, and it was popular enough that shell be teaching it

maybe do another type of class on gardening, she says.
The Young Ones
CE is known for its summer recreation programs, like swimming, gymnastics, basketball camps, fitness training, T-ball and more
recently, trap shooting.
But Schnitzler says pre-school, child care
and school readiness programs have grown
significantly in the last few years.
Located at Liberty and Independence
Elementary Schools, Kids Club now offers
before, during and afterschool childcare for
kids from three years to ninth grade with creative curriculum and engaging activities. So
its not just about adults watching kids all day.
Kids learn and have fun while their parents
are at work. Its a win-win for everyone, says
Schnitzler.
A parent could drop off their child at 6
a.m. in childcare; at 9 a.m. we send them to
School Readiness; they come back to childcare at noon and in the afternoon they are
involved in daytime childcare preschool.
Then after school there are more childcare
activities and the parent can pick them up at
6 p.m., he says. Its kind of like one-stop
shopping.
Big Lake CE publishes three catalogues
each year with dozens of programs each sea-

son.
Schnitzler says there are plenty of people
out there who might be good at something,
and CE is a great way to share their knowledge.
We know there are people who have
some sort of expertise, he says. So anyone
interested in teaching a class should contact

Our lakes have many stories

Since long before Europeans ever came
to this continent, the waters of the two lakes
now known as Big Lake and Lake Mitchell
have been enticing weary travelers to stop
and rest a while along one of the worlds
most ancient trails.
Native Americans lived here then, first
the Sioux, then the Ojibwe, who were
forced to make their way west by the invasion of Europeans.
It was an inviting spot, with clean water,
sandy beaches, an abundance of fish and
shady oak woods which grew all around.
Joseph Brown, the first European credited
with settling the town, thought it was the
perfect spot for a hotel, so he built one. It
proved popular for generations.
Many older residents can recall eating
Sunday dinner of roast beef at the hotel run
by Josephs descendants, who inherited the
business after he was run over be a stagecoach in front of his hotel, located in what
is now Lake Street North between The
Holiday Station and the old school building.
The Browns donated the land for the
school, which was built in 1903 and added
onto in 1915. But it was the community
who came together and decided to make
Big Lake into a tourist attraction in the late
1800s to generate income.
And come they did, from the Twin Cities
and beyond on the trains which arrived in
the mid 1860s.
People would dine at one of the many
restaurants, fish, boat and swim in the
waters, dance at the pavillion, ride the
carousel, play ballgames or listen to guest
speakers. At the end of the day they would
stay at a hotel or get back on board the train
for the trip home.
Ice Man Cometh
In the wintertime the lake provided
income in another form. Blocks of ice were
cut from the clear waters and loaded onto
trains to provide the first refrigeration in the
form of ice boxes.
Every week the ice man, Paul Glass,
would come and bring a fresh block of ice
to help people keep things cold, Big Lake
native Delores (Hudson), Lanz remembered.
One terrible winter an ice wagon and a
team of horses broke though the ice as they
moved the blocks to shore. They sank without a trace in the deepest part of the lake on
the south side, near Russells.
Before Big Lake became known as a
vacation place, it was known for hunting
and farming. The government at the time

sold several 10-acre lots to area resident on

the undeveloped west side of the lake with
the idea that they would become poultry
farmers, raising chickens for eggs and meat.
As Big Lake became known for tourism,
many little cabins were built on the shores
of both the lakes. On the east side, a little
store opened at the intersection of Crescent
Street and Glenwood to serve ice cream
and other treats.
A pavillion was built for dancing, near
where Mary of the Visitation Catholic
Church is now. Later it became a roller rink
and there was a carousel. Shoreacres Resort
was where Shoreacres Townhomes are
now.
Summer Camp
Camp Wells was on the north east side of
Lake Mitchell and consisted of 90 acres of
wild land owned By St. Marks Episcopal
Church in Minneapolis. They used it to provide a summer camp experience for children from North Minneapolis.
The camp was first overseen by Henry
and Annie Anderson. Annie cooked at the
Anderson Cafe in town and was known for
her good food. She cooked for Camp Wells
and she and Henry lived on the property
and took care of it, although they already
owned one of the 10-acre lots on the west
side of the lake.
When Henry passed away, Cal Hinrichs
and Dorothy (Anderson) Hinrichs were
asked to be the caretakers. Cal and Dorothy
lived in Big Lake and moved back here after
college.
They lived on the 10 acres until they were
asked to take care of Camp Wells. They
moved there and lived there for the next 20
years.
We raised our four children there, said
Dorothy, who had one son, Richard, and
three daughters, JoAnn, Gayle and Jana.
We joined in all the camp activities. It was
wonderful.
The camp had a big lodge and several
cabins for campers. There were quarters for
a nurse, a cabin for arts and crafts, a garage
workshop and the house the Hinrichs lived
in.
Cal taught Industrial Technology at Big
Lake High School for 33 years but it was far
from his only endeavor. He and Bob
Lannoye opened the first Skidoo
Snowmobile dealership in the area.
His daughter Gayle recalled Cal, Bob and
Oris Harstad all piling on one machine one
winter to take a trip to town. The trio
plunged through the ice when they got to
the channel.
Dad said as they were going down he
grabbed for Oris, who was on the back and

just caught his coat collar at the back of the neck as he was
about to go under the ice, Gayle recalled.
They made it out of the water and post haste to the nearest house on the point between the two lakes to warm up.
Snowmobiles often got stuck on the hill in Camp Wells and
Cal would always help them.
Camp counselors stayed the whole summer but campers
came for two weeks at a time to learn swimming, canoeing
and water safety. They played games and did art projects and
hunted for tiny turtles near the lagoon.
Gayle remembered deciding to ride her horse down to the
little store to buy some candy one day. When he got to the
point where the trail led away from the beach the horse
turned into the water and decided to roll.
I was still on its back, Gayle laughed.
On a recent trip to Florida Gayle and her husband, Ron
Berthiaume, met a man in a flooring store who said he
remembered staying at Camp Wells as a child.
He said he had a great time there, Gayle recalled. He
said it was a blast.
Changing Times
Eventually the pavilion turned roller rink became a home
for the Bondhus family, a large family with lots of children.
Their father, Tom, was an inventor, Gayle recalled.
One year he had a very successful invention. He gave out
dollar coins for Halloween that year, she said. Kids were
going home to change their costumes so they could go back
again.
Another favorite destination for the Hinrichs kids was the
A&W Restaurant on the south west corner of the lake.
I often rode my bike there, said Gayle.
St. Marks decided to sell the land, much to the surprise of
the Hinrichs. The new owner, Will Beaudry, turned the lodge
into a supper club named Tracys and sold the land for development. In 1977 the lodge caught fire and burned to the
ground.
I remember we went out onto the ice and watched it
burn, said Dorothy. the land is all built up now.
Beaudry and Hinrichs built their share of the little starter
homes around the lakes. All Dorothy has left is an acre and
a half of the original 10-acre lot on the west side of the lake.
The lakes are still put to use by Big Lake residents today,
although more for recreation than survival. Lakeside Park is
home to many events every year, including the Big Lake
Farmers Market, Music in the Park, ice fishing contest and
the Big Lake Granitman.

River Oaks Park: West of CR 5 and north of Grace Drive. Dirt
walking trail. This part provides access to the Elk River.
Riverside Landing Park: East of CR 5, across from Highline
Drive. This park provides access to the Elk River.
Sanford Select Acres Park: Sanford Avenue and Eaglewood
Drive.
Shores of Lake Mitchell: 3211 Lake Ridge Drive. Located
south of Lake Ridge Drive and north of Manitou Street.
Playground, swings, benches, horseshoe pits, soccer field and
basketball court.
Sweetwater Bend Park: Located in Sweetwater Bend
Development located on the northern most part of the city
limits. Off CR 73 Thompson Lake.
Wrights Crossing Park: 514 Forest Road. Located S of Hwy 10
and N of Forest Rd. Playground, swings, gazebo, benches,
picnic tables and volleyball court.
SHERBURNE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1965,
comprises more than 30,700 acres of wetlands, prairie openings and oak savanna and is home to an astounding array of
native animals. The Refuge is open seven days a week during daylight hours free of charge. Visitor information leaflets,
which include a map of the Refuge, may be picked up at
information kiosks at Refuge entry points. The Refuge office is
open Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 763-389-3323. You can visit the Refuge web site
at: www.fws.gov/midwest/sherburne.
Wildlife Drive: Prairies Edge Wildlife Drive is located 1.2
miles north of Orrock on Sherburne County Road 5. The
Drive is open during daylight hours from late April throughout October. This 7.3 mile auto tour features three wildlife
observation decks and three short hiking trails.
Hiking Trails: The Refuge offers two scenic hiking trails, the
Mahnomen and Blue Hill, both located on County Road 9.
The trails are for foot travel only. Bicycles and horses are not
permitted. Pets must be leashed.
Open Hiking: All Refuge lands are open to hiking, crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing from Sept. 1 - Feb. 28.
Cross Country Skiing: Two ungroomed trails, The Blue Hill
Trail and the Mahnomen Trail, are available in the Refuge for
cross-country skiing.
Fishing: All fishing, including ice fishing, is confined to the St.
Francis River. Access points are located where the St. Francis
River crosses county roads. State regulations apply.
Canoeing: Canoeing is permitted only on Battle Brook south
of Little Elk Lake and on the St. Francis River south of Battle
Brook. Use is limited to daylight hours. Overnight
camping/campfires are not permitted.
Bicycling: Bicycling is permitted on the Prairies Edge Wildlife
Drive and public roads crossing the Refuge. Hiking trails are
closed to bicycling and no off-road travel is permitted. Refuge
service roads are open to bicycling Sept. 1 - Feb. 28.

SAND DUNES STATE FOREST

Sand Dunes State Forest is located in central Sherburne
County, about three miles west of Zimmerman and 5 miles
north of Big Lake. The forest can be reached by taking
Sherburne County five north from Big Lake, off U.S. 10, or following Sherburne County Highway 4 west from Zimmerman
off U.S. 169.
Sand Dunes has something for just about everyone. The
225-acre Bob Dunn Recreation Area, nestled within the forest, holds a 36-unit Ann Lake Campground and Day-Use area
including the Sand Dunes Horse Camp which fills early and
often on summer weekends.
The Sand Dunes consists of oak savanna forest and prairie
and 2,700 acres of pine plantation of rolling terrain and few
hills. It provides beautiful areas for a variety of recreational
activities, such as horseback riding, snowmobiling, hunting,
swimming, panfish fishing on Ann Lake, camping, hiking, and
cross-country skiing.
BRIDGEVIEW PARK RESERVE
Acquired in 1996, it is approximately 29 acres in size and
lies along the Mississippi River, with over 1,200 feet of shoreline. The park is located along County Road #50, east of State
Hwy. 25 and south of County Road #11. The land is gently
rolling with a ridge extending east and west offering some
scenic vistas overlooking the Mississippi River, which in this
area is part of the Wild and Scenic River System.
Much of the park is comprised of an Oak Woodland/
Brushland forest. This is significant in part because it is a portion of only 5% of Sherburne County that still contains intact
native plant communities.
A mowed trail system allows for recreational activities such
as hiking, snowshoeing, and birdwatching and educational
experiences featuring native grasses, wildflowers, and
wildlife. The park is managed for low impact use. A parking
area serves as the entrance to the park.
Park Rules: No motorized vehicles. No hunting. No camping. All pets must remain on a leash. Please stay on designated trails. The digging or transplanting of any vegetation is prohibited.
Highlights: Hiking Trails, Snowshoeing, Birdwatching,
Scenic Views
Hours: The park is open dawn to dusk 7 days a week.
Directions: The Bridgeview Park Reserve is located southwest of Big Lake along the Mississippi River. From State Hwy.
25, go west on Co.Rd. 11 and then immediately south on
Co.Rd. 50. Go mile and the park entrance is on the south
side of the road.

The Big Lake Industrial Park has been in development for 15
years with the final plat for Phase I of the development going
before the Big Lake City Council in August, 2000.
The industrial park is a joint development orchestrated by
the City of Big Lake and the Big Lake Township Board of
Supervisors.
The idea is to help bring more jobs to Big Lake, a community where most people commute to other locations for
employment and to swell the coffers of both with more industrial property.

The land was chosen, east of the

city, in the township but close enough
to run city sewer and waterlines out
there. It was purchased in1997.
There was a great deal of collaboration between the two governing entities.
Roads were completed and by 2006, all
13 lots in the park were sold out.
The success of the park, in just a few
short years, inspired the second phase
of expansion. An additional 34 acres of
land was purchased in 2008, roads
were put in and city sewer and water
installed.
Unfortunately, about the time the
acreage was purchased and made
shovel ready and certified, the bottom
dropped out of the economy and the
lots were slow to sell.
Now the economy has turned
around and interest is resurging. The lots
vary in size from less than one acre to
almost 16 acres, but could be configured in many ways with a wide variety
of uses allowed.
The Big Lake Industrial Park sits on
Hwy. 10 with easy access to I 94.
Located roughly halfway between the
Twin Cities and St. Cloud and only 15
minutes from the Albertville Outlet
Mall, the Big Lake Industrial Park is easy
to find.
The location is close to the
Northstar Commuter Rail Line. Big Lake
is the northernmost stop on the line and
is home to the Northstars Maintenance
Facility.
The train is met by the Northstar
Link bus from St. Cloud. Big Lake is less
than an hour away from the Twin Cities
International Airport.
Big Lake has an excellent supply of
well-educated workers who would prefer to work close to home. It also has a
good stock of housing and new water
treatment and wastewater treatment
facilities.

play in a city where community matters. With
our beautiful lakes and our great parks, trails,
organizations, and school district, Big Lake is a wonderful city
with a strong sense of community. Big Lake has many opportunities for recreation and community involvement through
summer events such as Music in the Park, Big Lake Farmers
Market, Spud Fest, the Fire Department Dance, Graniteman
Triathlon, Movie in the Park, Team Liam 5K walk/run and Big
Lake Block Party, as well as winter events which include
snowmobile races, ice fishing contests, Get Outdoors Winter
Fest Event and our Community Tree Lighting ceremony, just to
name a few. Big Lakes past and future successes depend
greatly on people volunteering and becoming involved in the

The Big Lake City Council is comprised of elected officials
consisting of a Mayor and four City Council Members, all of
whom are elected at-large. All seats are four-year terms with

City Information
Big Lake is a growing community in Sherburne County. The
2010 census reports the City of Big Lakes population to be
10,060 and Big Lake Township's to be 7,386, totaling 17,392.
The City of Big Lake is home to many beautiful natural amenities with our pride and joy being Lakeside Park. This park
offers beach and boat access to Big Lake and Lake Mitchell,
and provides numerous outside activities including a childrens play area, volleyball courts, a basketball court, horseshoe pits, outdoor exercise equipment, a fishing pier, skate
park, picnic areas, and is home to the Big Lake Farmers
Market, Movie in the Park events, and the Big Lake Legacy
Foundations Music in the Park summer events.
Big Lake is roughly 45 miles away from the Minneapolis/St.
Paul International airport and 28 miles from the St. Cloud
Regional Airport. Our community is also the home to the
northern most stop of the NorthStar Commuter Rail. This service will provide access from Big Lake, down to Minneapolis,
stopping in Elk River, Ramsey, Anoka, Coon Rapids, Fridley
and connecting to the Hiawatha Line (light rail) in downtown
Minneapolis.

Ambassador programs in the state, has
been recognized by the Minneapolis
Aquatennial Committee for the past
two years.
Former Ambassador Samantha Young
represented Big Lake at the last
Aquatennial. This year, 2013-14
Ambassador Madelyn Zinken represented the Big Lake community.
Big Lake Grand Knight Norb Vossen
was also recognized as Special
Commodore by the Aquatennial committee because of his volunteer efforts
in and around the community, including support for the Ambassador program.
Amy Bodine, who chairs the current
Big Lake Ambassador Committee,
comprised mostly of former ambassadors, estimated the girls attend 25-30
parades and coronations
each year and volunteer
close to 1,000 hours of community service between
them each year.
One of our goals is to
raise their scholarships to
$1,000 but we havent been
able to do that yet, Bodine
said. They certainly earn it.

Early Childhood

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a Big Lake

Community Education program that provides parent education, and learning and development classes for young children. A licensed parent educator and/or a licensed early
childhood teacher lead classes with the assistance of support
staff, if needed. These classes are a great way to meet lifelong
friends who share the same concerns, joys and challenges as
you. ECFE classes serve children age 0 to 5.
Little Learners Preschool is a highly recognized and soughtafter program that focuses on school readiness for ages 3, 4
and 5. Parents can choose to have their children attend two,
three or four times a week either in the morning or afternoon.
The preschool offers unmatched programming that follows
school readiness curriculum designed around building selfesteem, increasing social skills, encouraging self-reliance and
developing cognitive skills necessary for kindergarten success.
Additionally, curriculum is structured to nurture development of the whole child through teacher-led small and large
group activities and child-directed time centered around
interest areas including literacy, math, science, dramatic play,
art, music, games and outdoors. Core curriculum components
of Every Day Math and Daily Five for Language and Literacy
are embedded in the framework in order to align with kindergarten standards.
Lesson plans are focused on objectives derived from the
MN Early Childhood Indicators of Progress. Children are
taught by a licensed teacher and one assistant in a safe and
nurturing environment.

BIG LAKE COMMUNITY GARDENS

After a long winter, do you long to be planting, weeding and
harvesting this upcoming summer, but dont have a yard to
garden in? Heres your chance! The City of Big Lake begins
accepting applications in the middle of March 2016 from City
of Big Lake residents interested in leasing a garden plot.
Garden plots are 10 feet by 20 feet. The garden plots are
located at 18041 198th Avenue, Big Lake, adjacent to the
driveway entrance to the Big Lake Public Works Building
(next to the water tower). Gardens will be leased to City of Big
Lake residents on a first come first serve basis. Garden plots
will be leased (check the city for the price) to help cover cost
of water and other garden expenses.
Community garden applications, rules and regulations can
be picked up and delivered to City of Big Lake City Hall, 160
Lake Street North, Big Lake, MN 55309, Attention: Mike
Goebel. Community Garden applications, rules and regulations can also be downloaded from the City of Big Lakes web
site.
