Ionic Processor
Introduction :
An ion is an atom or molecule where the total number
of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons,
giving it a net positive or negative electrical charge.
Ionic:
Adj: containing or involving or occurring in the form of
ions;
The working mechanism behind the scene is an “ionic engine” embedded in the computer
chip which is able to generate positive charged ion molecules, that being attracted or push
towards the negatively charged node. When this happens, the surge air flow current will
carry the heat air molecules more effectively, and hence cool down the whole system
thoroughly. Researchers from Purdue University believe that the new method could
increase the cooling rate up to 250 percent in conjunction with the use of traditional fan-
based cooling system
A new type of ultra-thin, silent cooling technology for processors is being developed by
Kronos Advanced Technologies in collaboration with Intel and the University of
Washington. In two years, this new technology might replace existing cooling fan
technology in laptops and other portable devices, making them more reliable and far
quieter.
The (Ionic Processor) new technology could help engineers design thinner laptop
computers that run cooler than today's machines, the researchers believe
Most of the time, traditional way of cooling system such as huge heat sink and fan may
not be suitable due to the space constraint and form factor of the PC architecture. Here it
comes the new revolution of cooling mechanism known as Ionic cooling system.
So in short the main purpose of introducing that technology is that to reduce the heating
in electronics products, including cell phones

History
An ETH Zurich researcher has developed a computational method for predicting the
structure of materials. He used it to solve the structure of a newly synthesized form of
pure boron that displays some unusual physical properties and brings a surprise: it is
partially ionic.
Since the early 1980s a new class of room temperature ionic liquid has been available
that has attracted great interest due to the potential commercial and environmental
advantages offered over existing liquids.
Theories of chemical bonds go back a long time. One of the first was developed by
Roman poet Lucretius (c. 95–c. 55 B.C.), author of De Rerum Nature (title means "on the
nature of things"). In this poem, Lucretius described atoms as tiny spheres with fishhook-
like arms. Atoms combined with each other, according to Lucretius, when the hooked
arms of two atoms became entangled with each other.

Computers PC
Laptops
Cell phones
Plazma TV

Ionic Processor
Advantage
Better Heat Reduction, No Noise:
Ionic-cooling system can extract roughly 30 percent more heat from a laptop than
a conventional fan and could potentially consume only half as much power to operate the
cooling system
Electron flow:
An ionic wind engine generates wind using an electric current passing
through the air between two electrodes placed close together. As electrons flow
between these electrodes they collide with air molecules, creating positively
charged ions that are then attracted back to the negatively charged electrode.
This creates a small, concentrated breeze
Reduce passive cooling:
The major advantage of passive cooling is its limited ability to dissipate
large amounts of heat quickly. Modern heat sinks are incapable of effectively
cooling high-end CPUs, not to mention high-end GPUs, without the assistance of
a fan.
Batter Design:
The new technology could help engineers design thinner laptop computers
that run cooler than today's machines,
Best Cooling:
Cooling solution that induces cooling airflow by way of ionizing air particles. It
calls this technology an Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) ionic wind pump.
Disadvantage:
Effect cooling computer components:
Ionic-cooling system effect the computer cooling components or electronic
cooling components
Which is manufacturing cooling components like fan’s or other
Voltage drop:
The relatively high voltages currently needed to generate ionic wind -
4,575 volts - would add significantly to the cost and complexity of a computer's
design.

Conclusion:
The merits of water-fed micro channel heat sinks have shown that the technology
may be a plausible and effective cooling solution for the ever-increasing power
dissipation of high speed microprocessors. Favorable factors such as high heat transfer
surface area and heat flux removal for reasonable operating pressures, as well small heat
sink mass and volume continue to drive the technology. However, ionic water's
extremely low electrical resistively and the potential for hazardous interaction with an
active microprocessor have justifiably caused apprehension to close-proximity
implementation of micro channel heat sinks. Dielectric fluids can be utilized closer to the
active processor than water, but generally have much lower thermal transport capability.
In this numerical study, an environmentally-friendly dielectric fluid with higher
resistively than water, but lower thermal transport capability is employed in channels
fabricated directly into the backside of a microprocessor. The cooling capability of the
dielectric close-proximity micro channel heat sink is evaluated, and found to be
ineffective. A Brownian-motion based empirical model of the enhancement of thermal
conductivity of the dielectric by Nan particle loading is employed in order to gauge
possible increase in effectiveness. It is found that the thermal transport capability of the
dielectric is significantly improved by Nan particle suspension. Temperature- dependence
of thermo physical properties is implemented in the model.
