This lesson plan outlines an assignment where students will research Caribbean islands in groups and present their findings to the class. The objective is to improve students' research, collaboration, and presentation skills. Students will choose an island to research, find reliable sources, and create a presentation in a self-selected format. The teacher will assess students based on a rubric focusing on sources, accuracy, organization, and presentation clarity. During the project, the teacher will monitor students, answer questions, and ensure equal contribution from all group members. The lesson is meant to expand students' understanding of different cultures and give practice with real-world skills.

The Cay Lesson Plan 1

Student Learning Objective(s):

Students will be able to conduct thoughtful research on a given topic in groups/pairs
(islands in the Caribbean), and present their information to the class (in any format they choose)
in a clear and well thought out manner. Also, students will be able to understand the context in
which The Cay takes place, both by researching the history and setting of the novel.

Rationale for Objective:

This objective will help support students ability to work with their peers effectively. It
will also help them gain more research skills, such as deciding what sources are reliable and
which are not. Finally, it will help students become more comfortable with presenting in front of
their peers which is something they will have to do in life.

Assessment:
There will be a rubric (created on Rubistar) for students to use as a guideline when
creating their research project and presenting their information. I will look specifically for
reliable sources, information accuracy, neatness, organization, and the extent of which students
can clearly deliver their information. The format of their presentation can be any they choose, so
long as the information is accurate and relevant to what we are discussing in class (i.e. the setting
of The Cay).

Classroom Learning Environment Focus:

Procedure:
1. I will bring up my smart notebook and explain the assignment to the class.
2. Students will choose their groups and islands that they will research.
3. Students will then access the thinglink I created to get to a starter website for their
research.
4. Students will be given time in class and in the library to conduct research.
5. Students will use multiple sources for their research, not just the one I provide them.
6. Once students have done their research they will meet with their groups/partners and
begin creating their presentations.
7. Students will be given time in class to work on their presentations.
8. Once students finish their presentations, they will then present their research to the
class.

Behavior:
Students will work silently, however talking quietly with their groups/partners will be
acceptable as long as it is relevant to the task at hand. Students will give respect to
everyone in their groups, giving everyone a chance to provide input. Students will also
not let their groups do all the work for them, all students must contribute to the project.
When students are presenting, the audience will remain silent and respectful.

Instructional Model/Strategy:
First I would begin with direct instruction, explaining to the students what was expected
of them. I would also have the instructions and an example up on smart notebook for all the
students to see. Once everything is explained, the students will work in groups or in pairs. They
will have access to computers and books related to their topic. I would walk around to check on
students and also answer any questions if necessary. However, this will be a lesson that revolves
more around the students ability to work without much help from the teacher.

Materials/Resources Needed for Lesson:

Smart board with smart notebook available

Copies of The Cay

Laptops/chrome books

Rubistar rubrics

Thinglink access for map

Daily Formative Assessment:

As the students work on their projects I will walk around the room to make sure that they
all remain on task. I will also answer questions if needed. I will also check in with groups to see
who has contributed what to the project to make sure everyone is participating.

Differentiating Instruction:
For students who have lower academic abilities I will provide them with extra help and
resources if need be. I would require they contribute at least a little to the project but I would not
demand more than they were capable of. For students who know English as their second
language I will try to pair them up with any students who may be able to translate for them.
Otherwise I will try to find resources in that childs language, or give them extra help in their
research. Also, if a student has difficulty speaking in front of others, I would encourage them to
try but if not, then they can write up their part and have another student speak for them. Finally,
the presentations can be in any format that the students decide.

Initiation:
A. Students will learn how to conduct accurate research using reliable sources, and
putting all of that information into a well organized presentation.
B. By following the rubrics guidelines and producing well organized presentations, they
will be able to demonstrate the information they learned from their research.
C. Being able to do research, find reliable sources, organize it into presentations, and
present in front of peers is something students will have to do some time in their life.

Whether it is for school or for a particular career. Also, this gives students a glimpse
at other cultures and places, expanding their world view even more.

Closure:
To close out the lesson I would have a group discussion with the class about the lesson
they just did. I would ask them what they thought of it and what they may have learned from this
kind of activity. I would also ask why this kind of activity was important. I would emphasize that
it is important to understand other people, know where they come from and what their culture
may be. Every day they will meet new people with different backgrounds than their own and
they will need to be able to interact with that person. I will then segue to the book The Cay and
relate their projects to the book. I will then begin the following lesson and reading the book with
the students.
