Okay, we are all inundated with political wrangling and the vote is still a year
away. It is exhausting. So, for a little lightheartedness let me share these
apolitical aphorisms that were sent to me recently

There were plenty more, but you get the gist. (Some were actually too frightening
to include.) I bring this topic to point because whether you care or not, it is the
opening sentence of almost every media presentation. Christians are united in
their belief and faith in the Triune God, and both Republicans and Democrats can
claim Christianity. We have differing opinions on how government should be run.
Differing opinions have us rooting for Iowa, ISU, or UNI (or that other team). We
may never have attended those schools, but we have an allegiance of some sort
to them. I do not know nor have ever met any of the candidates, Republican or
Democrat. Most of them profess Christianity; a few are more outspoken than
others. We have a full year before we decide and vote. What do we do in the
meantime to help us make our final decision? Well, as I have often mentioned in
messages, the answers to all lifes dilemmas are in the Bible. It may take some
digging to find those answers, but it is the place to start.
First Timothy 2:2, offers some starting advice for us to employ Pray especially
for rulers and their governments to rule well It sure doesnt offer any specific
names does it? It wont. What else can we do? Keep praying. Psalm 107: 28,
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He brought them out of their
distresses. Still not helping? No clarity? Try James 1:5 If any of you lacks
wisdom(dont know what youre doing, per The Message), let him ask of God,
who gives to all generously.
One more before I close from 2nd Chronicles 7:14, [if] My people, who are
called by My name, will humble themselves and prayI will restore their land to
health. It seems that prayer is the path to our solutions. Since I opened with
some humorous quotes about politics, let me close with a quote on prayer from
Corrie Ten Boom, who lived during a time of questionable government and its
leadership Dont pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord
and keep it. A man is powerful on his knees.

Adult Bible Study
You are invited to join us on Sunday nights from 6-7 pm as we discuss the
interesting book, The Good and Beautiful God. We usually meet at Ron & Lois
Groths home, but check each Sunday morning for sure. Our tentative
conclusion is November 22. The men and women meet in different rooms but
come together at the end for a little snack!

Projection Details
A big thank you to the projectionists who so faithfully provide us with visuals and
tapes each Sunday. As a courtesy to them, it is very helpful to have your items
to the projectionist before, or at least during, the Sunday School hour so that
final adjustments may be made prior to the worship service. Thank you.

CROP Walk
The annual CROP walk was held on October 4. It is sponsored by the NW
Tama County Ministerial Association. A big thank you to Chapel who donated

Veterans Day Service
The Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary is hosting a Veterans Day Service at
Westbrook Acres on Wed., Nov. 11, 2 p.m. Veterans present will be honored with
a poppy boutonniere and their name and branch of service announced. There
will be patriotic music, including the service songs and refreshments. Public is
invited.

Annual Church Conference
District Superintendent, Jackie Bradford, led Church Conference on Tuesday,
October 27, at 6:30 pm at Dysart UMC. The nominations committee presented
their slate of officers at the meeting.

Harvest Home Sunday
Everyone is invited to gather after church on Sunday, November 22, for a
potluck meal to celebrate Gods many blessings this year. Please bring your
own table service and potluck. The UMW will provide drink and decorations.

Sunday School Election
The Sunday School elections will be held Sunday, November 8, at 9:30 am.
Responsibilities will start on January 1, 2016, and the election will include
(2015 names in parenthesis) Sunday School Superintendents (Vaugn
Kloster, Randy Beichley, Lynn Handorf, Mike Vint); SS Treasurer (Rick
Bessman), and SS Secretaries (Shirley Svendsen, Karen Handorf, LeAnn

Poinsettia Orders
If you would like to give a poinsettia in honor or memory of someone, please

Kids Shopping Day
Children may Christmas shop for free at the Gladbrook Soup Day on
Saturday, December 5, at 9-12 am at Peace Church, four blocks north of
Caseys. When they first arrive, they will write out a list of who they want to
choose gifts for, and then an adult will help them find what they are looking
for.
While cleaning this fall, please set aside new, or gently used, items to be
used as merchandise (no clothing). Ideas include toys, books, kitchen items,
knick-knacks, jewelry, tools, sporting and domestic items, etc. There will be a
box in the narthex for items you would like to donate for children to choose to
give as Christmas gifts. Also, please bring any extra gift bags you have; they
take less time to put gifts in than wrapping. Thank you.

Hanging and Dehanging of the Greens
Hanging of the Greens will be done following our Harvest Home potluck on
November 22. Everyone is encouraged to participate, but the following
Sunday School classes will chair certain areas:
The Adult II class (Shirley Svendsen): put out nativity set.
The Adult I class (Kathryn Burt), plus the Jr. High & High School class:
decorate sanctuary tree, put up garland/lights in sanctuary and put garland
on ramp ledge.
The M&M class (Karen Handorf): decorate the Fellowship Hall tree and
put up inside & outside nativities.
The Life Application Class (Dee Burt, Backoffs, Jacksons, etc): put out
bulletin board cloth and decorate narthex.

The first Sunday of Advent starts on November 29. The Dehanging of the

Operation Christmas Child
We hope you are buying small items for Operation Christmas Child. The shoe boxes and other forms are on the

The all-church caroling will be Sunday, December 6. We will meet at Chapel at 2:30 pm and then probably divide into
two caroling groups. We will end the night at Zenos Pizza. Committees include:

Trip to Iowa Falls
October 3, 2015
The UMW sponsored a day trip to Iowa Falls on October 3, 2015. Eleven women left Chapel Church at 9:30 am and
traveled to Iowa Falls. We visited a gift shop downtown until it was time to meet Virginia Stockdale, Janice Collins
sister at The Gathering Place for lunch. This was a former nursery/garden shop converted into a restaurant and gift
shop. We visited an antique store and a thrift shop. The thrift shop is run by the women of the area churches. Virginia
said her church helps out there. At 2 pm we started our eighty minute cruise of the Iowa River aboard the Scenic City
Express pontoon boat. We saw beautiful scenery of limestone bluffs, historic homes, and the Iowa Falls swinging
bridge. The cruise was beautiful with sunny skies and a slight breeze. Before leaving Iowa Falls we treated ourselves
at the local Dairy Queen. It was a very enjoyable day.

Kathryn Burt is updating Chapel's historian scrapbooks and photo albums. If you have any pictures or clippings of
events from recent years, including 2015, that you would like to donate, please write the event and date on the backs
before giving them to Kathryn. She wants everything to be ready for Chapel's 150th birthday in 2017. Thank you.

LCA Minutes
October 14, 2015
The Chapel Ladies Cemetery Aid met for lunch at 12:30 pm at the home of Vivian LeVier. A delicious lunch was
served from a beautifully appointed table. President Connie Appelgate opened the meeting. Shirley Svendsen led
devotions with a poem Lovely Day and closed with a prayer.
Six members answered roll call. The minutes of our September meeting were read and approved. The treasurers
report of $3185.80 was presented and placed on file. No bills were presented.
Old Business: Vivian LeVier reported on those grave markers that need some attention and or repair. There are six
that we found need some attention. There is one that needs some major repair on its base. Vivian will contact a
memorial company to see if they knew of someone to repair stones and what the cost would be. It was suggested we
clean stones in the spring, with the help of family members of the deceased.
New Business: None
Committee reports: Hiring-Smiths trimmed evergreen trees and some bushes. They will trim up the peonies later
when we have a hard freeze. They will spray for weeds. They have been paid for the mowing for this year.
Cards- two cards have been sent.
Flags-Center flag was flown on Patriot Day, September 11. Next occasion is Veterans Day, November 11 for both
flags.
Connie Appelgate adjourned the meeting.

UMW Minutes
October 1, 2015

The Chapel UMW met Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 7 pm in the church fellowship hall. Claire Handorf and Sue Koster
led a program on Lessons from a Cupcake. They compared the aspects of a cupcake to ourselves: appearance,
smell, sweetness, flavor, moistness, ease of eating, icing, and special additions.
President Susan Beichley opened the business meeting. Roll call was answered by eleven members recalling on
aroma from their childhood. The minutes of our September meeting were read and approved. There was no
correspondence. The treasurers report of $495.91 in checking and $1003.63 in savings was presented and placed on
file. There were no bills presented.
Five cards have been sent.
Marcia Wiese presented a Spiritual Growth report by reading todays entry from Jesus Calling.
Old Business: Karen Handorf reported on the items purchased for Crayon Corner. They needed sheets for their
Pack-n-Plays, and toddler shirts and pants.
New Business: The Christmas Child boxes are here. There is a list of suggestive items to purchase or not to
purchase for the boxes. These lists were handed out to the members.
Sue Koster reviewed the upcoming years assignments for program and hostess duties.
We need to buy a 2015-2016 program book for lessons. Carolyn Kloster will make sure one is purchased before our
November meeting.
Our trip to Iowa Falls is this Saturday, October 3.
Announcements and prayer requests were received. Susan Beichley read our scripture verse and closed with prayer.
Cindy Ormston and Marcia Wiese served a pumpkin dessert on tables decorated in a Halloween theme.

CHAPEL'S CHRISTIAN COWBOY CHUCK WAGON CELEBRATION

On Sunday, October 4, 2015, those who entered Fellowship Hall were transported back to the Old West.
Our youth helped to greet and aid people in games if help was needed. They also did a superb job of asking
their friends to attend with them. It was great to see so many young faces there and all the enthusiasm they
brought with them.
The room was filled with cowboys, cowgirls, sheriffs, deputies - and even a rodeo clown. We lassoed
horses, picked up snakes, branded a cow blindfolded, searched for hidden gold nuggets and made Wanted
Posters of each other. There was a western trivia game that adults played at their table to see if they were
able to remember trivia about old TV westerns. They also did a "shout out" to guess the theme songs from old
westerns as the music played.
Supper was served around 4:30 pm on our Chapel chuck wagon. It consisted of beef burgers; hot dogs
(so they could "get-a-long-little-doggie"); baked beans; chips; applesauce; spiced peaches; cornbread/honey;
apple, peach and cherry cobblers; decorated sugar cookies in the shape of boots, horse shoes and horse
head. Beverages were cactus juice, lemonade, milk, water and coffee. There was very little left after the chow
line of 70 plus went through.
After supper cowpokes went back to playing games or visiting. There were door prizes and one special
prize for the person who rode a horse the farthest to get there. Darrel Burt won that one even though he pulled
his horse on wheels rather that rode itThat prize should have counted for originality, too! Kids and adults
participated in a "Dress the Sheriff" relay race overseen by Marla Hlas. Deanne Raymond made those
awesome posters for our games. Our tables and the Fellowship Hall were cleverly decorated by Lois Groth,
Karen Handorf and Connie Buchman with others helping.
After Ron Groth gave a cowboy story about training horses, we went outside and sat around a beautiful
campfire, which was made by Leon Lamer. Stories were told and songs were sung with Sue Koster
accompanying us with her ukulele. The youth skipped the campfire and had fun playing football. A fun evening
was had by all. A big thank you to Carol Lamer for chairing the event!

"The Story" video, followed by discussion, snacks; all ages invited

*Adult I is taught by Kathryn Burt in NE room of Fellowship Hall; a variety of topics; all
