ne o f the first things a new amaleur learns is that electricitv and

biology arc not very comp;tible.
A bru sh with the AC line can be a pain ful experience. and accidental con tact
with the high-vo ltage supply of a large
transmitting tube can be fatal. Because
o f thi s early training. occasionally reinforced by an unpleasant acciden tal jolt.
it might surprise some hams that tiny
electric al currents ca n be bene fi cial to
the human body.
For so me time, doctors have known
that passing a small current through a
bro ken bone will ca use it to heal faster.
Damaged tendons and nerves also seem

why this works is not known. alt ho ugh a
doctor once ex plained to me thai it

transistors I a nd 3 cond uct, the curre nt
flo ws in o ne di rection. while e ne rgizing
tran sistors 2 and 4 re verses the flow.
Most small switc hi ng transistors will
sta nd up to our requirement of 35 volts
at 50 microamps. hu t here we run into a
new problem. For each di rect ion. two
transistors are in series. with the load in
the middle. This creates a difficult bias
arrangement to drive both tra nsistor
bases equally. Fort unate ly, the re is a nea t
solutio n-the o ptocouplcr, This invaluable device contai ns an L ED a nd a
pho totransistor in one package . Energizing the LE D produces light, w hic h
ca uses the pb oto transistor to conduct.
No hase voltage is required. therefo re there are no bias requ ircmcms.
Optocc uplcrs are usuall y used to drive
another de vice. but our require ments are
so s mall that we can use them as o utput
transistors.
The cheapest optoisclators cost less
than a dollar a nd will withstand over 30
volts w ith c urre nt ratings in the hundreds of milliamps. For a few cents
m ore, optocouplc rs a re availabl e that
will withstand gO vo lts or more.
With four o procouplers in the o ut put
o f o ur device. all that re mai ns is to alternately drive the m in pairs. The simplest ci rcuit to accomplish this is the
m ultivib rator-c-nothin g more tha n two
ge neral-purpose transistors, two resistors. a nd two capacitors. Voltage is nOL at
all critical, and s ince we will he connecting batte ries in series to get 35 volts. we
can ta p ofT at the 9 vo lt point to power
the circui t. Wh ile we' re at it, adding IWO
more resistors and two tiny LE Os will give
a visible indication of circuit operation and
warn us when the battery goes dead.
Varyin g the freq uen c y of a multivi brator requ ires that I WO re si stors be
varied toget her... no big deal. Two gang pote ntio meters a re ideal fo r th is .
In fact. our design goal s do not specify
that a n eq ual d ut y cycle is req uired , or
eve n de sired , Two trim pot s will give

in series wi th each pot will es tabli sh a
ma xi m um freq uenc y limit, preventing
the ci rcuit fro m dro pping o ut o f oscillatio n when th e pot is adj uste d all the

T he prinled circuit board

When des igning a pri nted circuit
board for this type of project. a compromise must be made between size and
ease of construction. The board should
be si ngle-sided with as few j umpers as
possible, and there should be enough
room for 1/4 watt resistors, in case the
smaller 118 watt are not available. The
final design is shown in Fig.3.
In my work, I desi gn and bu ild a lot
o f prototype circuits , and I've settl ed
on an easy technique for c irc uit board
fabricat ion . I use a Computer Aided
Design (CA D) program to create the
actual pattern, and then use (he computer to gene rate a mirror image . If the
board is small , as in this case, I will
then copy th is m irrored pattern to
get the maximum number of circuits
from a standard po sitive pre-sen sitized
copperclad board . Thi s mirrored array
is s how n in F ig. 4, After printing this
pattern , I copy it with a standard copy
machine and inspect the copy fo r
places where the toner is less than pure
black . These areas, if any, are to uched
up with a felt-tip marker. When I've
got a pattern that will give a good,
pure black copy, I run two or three

been incredible. It 's been a year since the
original article .w w print , and t can still
coun t on a stack ofle tters every week . This
stack becomes a flood whenever Wayne
guests on the An Bell show, Since there are
com mon threads to many of these letters , I
thought I should address .fOme of the most
freq uently asked questions .

reversed because the body tends to
quickly "c harge up " a nd th e current
flo w drops off. Th e f req uency does not
seem to ma ke milch difference , and I' ve
used rates from 20 Hz. do wn to 0.2 H z.

but after a time, the foil becomes wrinkled,

critters nibbling at yo ur ankles. An alternative is to line the cuffs with l-inch-wide
heavy stainless-steel tape, available from

I would make a lot more noise about this

except for two things . Make that three.
First, I'm not an MD , so the medical industry wi// probably have no interest in
anything J haw to offer. Second, efforts to
try and bring down the COSt of medical
treatments could easily trigger an FDA attack and prison. Third, J need more people
to ca// or write to say they used it with success. I' ve never had anyone write and say
they had tried it and it didn 't work, but I'd
like more positive testimony.
