Rationale

This saves time and decreases

the risk for injury like falls and
straining.
Do not bathe if temperature is
below 36.0oC or according to
agency protocol.
The temperature will prevent
skin burns or chilling.

Bath time is a good time to

assess the overall skin condition
of the infant
Holding the infant securely
prevents
accidents
during
bathing. Elevating the infants
upper body throughout the bath
prevents water from accidentally
going to infants nose and
mouth.
This provides appropriate social
stimulation for the infant. This
will demonstrate for many
parents how to talk with an
infant.
Gently folding infants earlobes
towards the ear prevents water
from going inside the ear. Using
a mild nonirritating shampoo or
soap prevents dryness and
irritation.

This
prevents
transferring
microorganisms from one eye to
the other.

Cleaning the internal ear with

cotton-tipped applicators may
cause injury.
Use of plain water on face will
prevent irritation of the eyes by

water about 36.0 C to 37.7 C. The

healthcare worker can test the water
temperature by placing drops on side
surface of forearm. Water should feel
comfortably warm.
4. Remove infants clothing and inspect
the infants skin for dryness, signs of
irritation and infection.
5. Place the infant inside the tub, making
sure to support the head and the back
using your non-dominant hand and
forearm. The buttocks and legs of the
infant should be resting at the bottom of
the tub.

6. Talk to the infant throughout the bath.

7. With

your
non-dominant
hand
supporting the head, gently fold the
earlobes towards the ear canal with
your thumb and fingers and wash the
infants hair gently with a mild
nonirritating shampoo or soap. Wash
and rinse well. Take note of any
abnormalities.
8. Wash and clean the face. Cleanse the
eyes with plain water. Wash each eye
from the inner to the outer cantus, using
a clean portion of the wash cloth with
each swipe. If crusts are present on
eyelid margins, apply a moistened wash
cloth or cotton ball for 1 to 2 minutes
before cleansing.
9. Cleanse and wash the external ears with
plain water or a mild nonirritating soap
with a twisted end of the washcloth.
10. Cleanse the face and neck with plain
water or mild nonirritating soap or
