INTRODUCTION
Educational technology refers to the application of physical
science and engineering technology to provide mechanical or
electromechanical tools instrumentation or hardware, which can be
used for instructional purpose. It places as much stress on
educational ideas as on technological inventions largely because it
accepts that fundamental advances usually come from the interaction
of changing concepts leading the new ways of looking at things with
changing techniques leading to new ways of doing things. M -learning
is the part of educational technology.
M -learning is a subset of e- learning. According to keegan - The
mixing of distance learning with mobile telephony to produce
M- learning will provide the future of learning. The term m- learning is
a much more recent modification motivated by mobile
communications technology and modded on expressions such as
e-learning which refers more generally to learning and teaching
supported by computers and other electronic devices.

MOBILE LEARNING
In the term m-learning, m stands for mobile and the same
concept is also often simply referred to as mobile learning. M-learning
is any kind of learning that takes place via a portable hand - held
electronic device. Though the term immediately conjures up images
of smart phones, it infacts also refers to learning via other kind of
mobile devices such as tablet computers, net books and digital
readers. M-learning can take place at anywhere and anytime
responding to the needs of an always on society by providing
learners with materials and resources that they can access whatever
and wherever they chose. As well as giving the learner new
freedoms, it also increases the flexibility of teachers and instructors.
M-learning is often viewed as a competent of a learning programme,
something that supports the learning process as an add - on tool,
rather than being the principal learning method. In M-learning,
learning takes place by a combination and web based resources.

What is M-learning?

M-learning or mobile learning is defined as learning across

multiple contexts, through social and content interactions using
personal electronic devices. A form of distance education,m-learners
use mobile device educational technology at their time convenience.
It is the ability to obtain or provide educational content on personal
pocket device such as PDAS, smart phones and mobile phones.
Educational content refers to digital learning assets which includes
any form of content or media made available on a personal device.
M-learning technologies include hand held computers, MP3
players, notebooks, mobile phones and tablets. M-learning focuses
on the mobility of the learner, interacting with portable technologies.
Using mobile tools for creating learning aids and materials becomes
an important part of informal learning. It also encompasses efforts to
support broad educational goals such as the effective administration
of school systems and improved communication between schools
and families.

How is mobile learning differ from e-learning

E-learning has come to define any dissemination of educational
knowledge over the internet. This makes e-learning a subset of
technology based learning where m-learning is a subset of e-learning.
M-learning is differ from e-learning because it is more personal, more
fun, more interactive, networked, spontaneous, shorter duration,
more connected, directly to the point, just-on-time learning, engaging
users to contribute and share and from reader to producer of content.

Characteristics of mobile learning

Portability and mobility

Learners can access stored information anytime, anywhere &

learning resources move with learners

Wireless networking & Flexible learning spaces

M-learning space can be configured in the open, content based

or profile based formats
Interactivity

In m -learning, interaction is related to three aspects

The educational cognitive environment

Useful information at hand of learners

Skilled aspects

Mobile learning is private

Mobile learning is spontaneous not planned flexible
The

data which is delivered via mobile devices is

characterized with significant high quality images, pictures,
voice and diagrams.

Browser based AMS

The assessments can be browser based

Web 2.0 tools

M-learning makes available all the web 2.0 tools to the learners,
thus enriching his learning experience. Learners can used the
wiki, discussion forums, RSS feeds and pod casts
Rich content on mobile

M-learning enables transmission of rich content with a light data

transfer protocol to mobiles. It can also transmit multimedia
greetings and magazines for browsing on the mobiles.
Game based learning

M-learning enables students to learn with games - a highly

popular and innovative means of learning

Classroom management in m-learning

Mobile devices in the classroom
can be used to enhance group collaboration
among students through communication
applications, interactive displays and video
features.
7

Existing

mobile technology can replace cumbersome

resources such as textbooks, visual aids and presentation
technology.

Interactive and multi-mode technology, allows students to

engage and manipulate information

Mobile device features with WIFI capabilities allow for

on-demand access to information.

Access to classroom activities and information on mobile

devices provides a continuum for learning inside and outside

the classroom.
Mobile devices facilities online interaction between instructor

and student, and student to student.

M-learning help people acquire and develop language skills.
Improving levels of literacy, numeracy and participation in

education amongst young adults.

Using the communication features of a mobile phone as part

of a larger learning activity.

Eg:
Sending media or texts into a central portfolio, or
exporting audio files from a learning platform to your phone.
Developing workforce skills and readiness among youth and

young adults

The value of mobile learning.

Teachers who have used m-learning programs and
techniques have made the following value statements in favour of
m-learning.
It is important to bring new technology into the classroom.
Devices used are more light weight than books and PCs
Mobile learning can be used to divers if the types of learning

activities students part a keg in

Mobile learning can be a useful add-on tool for students with

special needs. However, for SMS and MMS this might be

dependent on the students specific disabilities or difficulties
involved.

Benefits
Relatively inexpensive opportunities, as the cost of mobile

devices are significantly less than PCs and laptops

Multimedia content delivery and creation options
Continuous and situated learning support
Decrease in training costs
Potentially a more rewarding learning experience
New opportunities for traditional educational instructions

Social and educational challenges

Social and educational challenges includes,

How to assess learning outside the classroom
How to support learning across many contexts
contents security or pirating issues
Frequent

changes in device models / technologies /

functionality etc

Developing an appropriate theory of learning for the mobile

age
Design of technology to support a lifetime of learning
No restriction on learning timetable
No demographic boundary

M-learning in mathematics
Today many kind of Android math applications are available
(1) Einstein Math Academy : Playing the game is easy, but
mastering it is hard due to the cleverly crafted scoring system.
Make strategical decisions and improve skills to plan.
(2) Math workout : Math / Maths workout is a set of
daily brain training exercise and math drills
designed to enhance mental arithmetic.

(3) Brain exerciser : Fun challenging and gives

your brain a little needed exercise

(4) Mental math free : Learn some secrets of

mental math and become good with numbers.
Practice makes perfect lets enjoy mental math
and train your brain.

11

(5) Falling

math

Simple

but

challenging, falling math is one of

the best math games on the Android
market

Role of M-learning activities in Mathematics

To guide students in a problematic situation, whose solution

requires the new concept

To consider that the main thing is not correctly solving the

problem itself, but the thought involved in the resolution, which
must provide generalizations.

To establish a graphic or symbolic model enabling study of the

basic principles of the general relation

To organize strategies enabling to explore resources of the

device itself to study mathematical themes : videos, photos,
songs

To understand that use of mobile technology should

collaborate to individual reflections and to collective analyses
of mathematical concepts

To use mobile devices to contribute to the development of

autonomy in the exploration of mathematical themes, as well
as to learning in real contexts.

Conclusion
As mobile devices are gradually converging into individual
information centers. Mobile learning become a viable learning
channel that would fit the living style of today. Mobile devices as a
pervasive medium that may assist us in combining work, study and
leisure time in meaningful ways. M-learning is convenient in that it is
accessible from virtually anywhere. Sharing is almost instantaneous
among everyone using the same content, which leads to the
reception of instant feedback and tips. M-learning also brings strong
portability by replacing books and notes with small devices, filled with
tailored learning contents.
Mobile learning is very useful in teachers. It facilitates creation of
curriculum based trails and allow authentic learning to take place. It
enable sharing of traits and reduce duplication of efforts. In students
m-learning enable inquiry based learning, collaborative learning and
self - directed learning.
