Lego

Hello, 4-H members. Today my topic that I am talking on is the worlds largest manufacturer of
tires. The company was first developed in Denmark, by Ole Christiansen. His company grew to
selling their products all around the world. They manufacture them in Denmark, Mexico, and
Hungary. They produce around 306 million rubber tires a year. Who is the largest producer of
tires? You might ask. It may come to you as a shocker, but Lego is. Lego produces 306 million
tiny, toy rubber tires a year, so, technically speaking, they are the largest manufacturer of tires.
For those of you who dont know what this is, Lego are pretty much small plastic tinker
toys, about this big (show size with hands) that attach together to form a small object. You can
make anything from spaceships to miniature desk lamps to train stations with Lego. The limit to
Lego is your imagination.
Lego was first developed by Ole Christiansen, a carpenter from Denmark, who made
wood toys. He named his toys Lego, from the Danish phrase, Leg Godt, which translates to
play well. His company expanded to making plastic toys in 1947, and making small,
interlocking plastic bricks in 1949. In 1954, Christiansens son, Godtfred, had become the junior
manager. He invented a new locking system for the bricks, which is still used today.
Lego manufacturers today mould Lego through

steps. First, they heat the plastic-

polymer compound to 232 degrees Celsius, until it can be formed. Second, they inject it into
moulds at 25 to 150 tons of force, to ensure the shape is right. After they take it out, they have
human inspectors check to make sure there is not noticeable difference in color or thickness.
Only 18 bricks per million million dont meet the acceptable standard, according to the lego
group. All but 1% of waste plastic is recycled an reused for materials, or sold to other
companies. Each year, there are about 36 billion Lego bricks made. Over the five decades that

the Lego Group has been producing Lego, they have produced over 400 billion Lego bricks. If
all of these bricks were divided up to everyone in the world, everyone would have 62 Lego
bricks.
Since the start of Lego, the Lego group has made hundreds of themes. Some of these
include town and city, castle, trains, pirates, wild west, etc. Some themes are licensed from
movies, like Cars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Prince of Persia, Star Wars, and Toy story. While
some of these themes may have military, like star wars, German and russian soldiers from
Indiana Jones, green toy story characters, there are no direct military themes. The reason for this
is because of Ole Christiansens policy of not making war look like games for children.
A new Lego product called Lego friends is coming out that is specifically for girls. The
Lego Friends set has newly designed characters, which act as role models, is designed to appeal
to how girls play, and has six new colors, including pink and purple bricks.
Another interesting Lego set is called Lego Mind storm. It is a line of robotics Lego.
The set includes motors, gears, pulleys, and pieces that detect light, touch, or sound. These pieces
can be programmed using software from Lego. Competitions have been made in high-schools
where kids use Mind storm bricks to use different tasks. Other competitions include the Junior
First Lego league for students ages 6-9 and the First Lego league for students ages 9-14.
In final, what I am trying to say is that Lego is a pretty sweet toy. It can enhance your
brain and engineering skills, its fun to play with, and it is easy to make things out of. Lego is
awesome.
