Learning intentions
Students will be able to add sets together to get a total amount.
Students will be able to distinguish and verbalize patterns within dominos.
Introduction
We will begin by talking about the game of dominos. Students will share what their prior
experiences are with the game. We will then shift the discussion to talk about how we can
count the dots on the domino to find the total. If we look closely, there is a line that
separates two sets. I will put a large domino up on the board for students to see. Students
will use their arrays/fingers to figure out how many dots we have all together. I will have
students come up and write number sentences to show their work. Students will also
verbalize how they recognized how many were spots were on each side so quickly. (Repeat
as necessary)
Activity
Students will complete their domino worksheet. On the front side they will be adding the
dots on both sides of the domino to find out how many they have altogether. They will then
write this out as a number sentence. On the back they will be given two dominos per
problem. They will then record how many spots each domino has and colour in the domino
that has the most dots.

Plenary
Students will share some of the answers to the domino problems and will show their work
on the board. I will pick students from the respective ability groups to share a problem that
is at a challenging, yet suitable level for them.

Differentiation
Blue/green table will be given problems that involve adding digits
that get a sum over 10. (encouraged to use fingers for help)
Red/yellow/orange will include problems with sums of ten and
below. (encouraged to use arrays for help)
