PROBLEM SHEET FOR PARTICULATE SOLIDS

1.

Black pepper powder was prepared in a hammer mill. The product was analyzed
using a set of sieves (vide Table). Calculate volume mean, surface-volume and mass
mean diameters of the particles, total surface area and number of particles if particles
in all fractions have common sphericity 0.85 and volume shape factor as 1.7. Find
out the characteristic shape factor b from the sauter mean diameter value obtained.
Take particle density as 1100 kgm-3.

4 Spice powder is made by cryogenic grinding technique. A representative sample of

spice powder is drawn from the bulk. It is analyzed for PSD using RRSB model. The
sample was sifted using two sieves having screens opening sizes as 200 and 100 m.
Fifteen percent of the total mass of the comminuted particles is retained on 200 m
screen while that of 65% is retained on 100 m screen. Obtain (in Graph in MS
Excel) the differential and cumulative particle size distribution for the powder.

5 Repeat Problem 4 to obtain the PSD using Gaudin-Schuhmann distribution model.
