Jaya seeks immediate withdrawal of fuel price hike

NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 16:
Slamming the latest hike
in prices of diesel and
petrol, Chief Minister J
Jayalalithaa today said
while the Centre was getting revenue by revising
excise duty, it was passing
the burden on the com-

mon man which was an

unjust act. Jayalalithaa
said since last November,
excise duty on diesel and
petrol had been hiked ve
times, at Rs 6.90 and Rs
8.35, respectively.
It is an unjust act that
the central government
receives revenue for itself

but forces the price hike on

ordinary people, she said
in a statement.
Referring to yesterdays revision of petrol (36 paise) and
diesel (87 paise), she said
the Oil Marketing Companies
(OMC) had reasoned the
changes in rupee-dollar value
for effecting the increase.

While there is no signicant change in global

oil prices, increasing the
rates based on rupeedollar value basis is not
fair, she said.
She said changes in
the value of Indian rupee
to that of US dollar was
based on the demand for

the American currency,

besides uctuation in stock
market due to factors like
outows of foreign investment.
The Chief Minister reiterated her opposition to continuation of the UPA-era
price xation policy of fuel
products, where the rates

were determined based on

import prices of crude.
The latest revision of
fuel prices will result in a
spurt in rates of essential
commodities which would
affect the poor people,
Jayalalithaa said while demanding that the revision
be rolled back.

Bus, buzz
It was all action on Aranganathan Subway in Saidapet as
an MTC bus was literally oating. Fire and rescue service
personnel were pressd into service and a huge rope was
tied from the bus with a couple of re engines and the bus
was pulled out with struggle. Interestingly the re and rescue
personnel were joined by civic staff, general public.
Eventually when the vehicle was pulled out of the
mess, thunderous applause and cheers from those
gathered at the venue rented the air.

No schools,
colleges for a week
Following the monsoon fury that almost white-washed
Chennai, several educational institutions in Chennai
and Kanchipuram districts have declared holiday till
Sunday (22 November). The incessant rain forced
many colleges in Kanchipuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur
and Cuddalore to announce holiday since Deepavali.
With water-level rising in many places and possibility
of more rain, the decision to extend holidays till Sunday
has been taken.

city have not only disrupted
normal life and caused trafc chaos in the neighbourhood,
but also made it difcult for the
public to access parking spaces.
Bringing a sigh of relief, a senior
citizen was found volunteering
himself to clear water stagnation
in one such parking space in the
neighbourhood.
The spot under the
Adyar bridge was earmarked for parking by
the civic authorities,
where at least thirty to fourty vehicles could be parked. After the
showers, water was stagnated in
the space, making it difcult for
the public to access it.
On seeing this, Kuppuswamy
borrowed a bucket and a mop
from the nearby shops and began
clearing the water. He is a resident of Kovalam and comes to the
place, everyday (to take care of

the security of a store there). He

stays there the entire day and returns home by six. I see hundreds
of ofce-goers and public park
their vehicle here. They must be
in pressure at that time and when
they nd a parking space like this,
it only adds to their woes. Hence,
I decided to clean it myself, said

The situation is similar in various parts of the neighbourhood,
the storm water drains are either
damaged or dysfunctional and not
serving the purpose. Now that the
monsoon has set up, authorities
have to look into the issue.

WHAT THREAT DO
THESE ANIMALS POSE?

There are many incidents where ight schedules have been disrupted or landing aircraft faced trouble due to animals straying on
to runways. In 2005, an aircraft taking off from Pune international
airport ran over a stray, which resulted in a two-hour delay of
ights.
In 2008, an Air India aircraft had a narrow escape when it hit a
nilgai during landing at Kanpur airport in Uttar Pradesh.
On 27 March 2008, a Kingsher Airlines aircraft hit a stray dog
on the runway at HAL Bangalore international airport resulting in
the aircrafts landing gear collapsing. The aircraft skidded off the
runway and its nose collapsed, and four passengers were injured.
In another incident in June 2008, some monitor lizards, jackals
and birds of prey strayed on to the secondary runway of Indira
Gandhi international airport, causing the airport to be closed for
one hour and disrupting the schedule of nearly 100 ights.

somehow seem to nd a way into

the airport.
According to animal activist and
Blue Cross of India general manager, Dawn Williams, The public and
authorities are partly responsible
for the problem. One of the main
reasons for the increase in number
of stray dogs is the waste disposal
method. Packs of strays naturally get attracted to the garbage
dumped in and around the vicinity.

WHAT NEWS TODAY PRINTS IS NEWS THAT COUNTS

It IS diabolic

t is Paris again. Barbarians owing allegiance to IS and shouting

Aallahu-Akbar killed at least 130 people on Friday night,
reminding the world yet again that piecemeal solutions to contain
the jihadi madness would just not do. This was the deadliest assault
on Paris after the January attacks at the satirical magazine Charlie
Hebdo in which 18 people were killed. Friday nights attacks
were well-coordinated and simultaneous. Islamist gunmen, armed
with automatic assault ries, attacked a city concert hall, taking the
people hostage. At the same time other gunmen shot people dead at
random in restaurants, bars and ve other places in Paris. Close to
the stadium a friendly football match between France and Germany
was on, with President Francois Hollande and 80,000 other sport
buffs among the spectators. Loud explosions were heard. Millions
more were watching the match live on television. After the rst
explosion, the police whisked Hollande to safety while the stunned
spectators invaded the ground at the end of the match as the word
spread about the terrorist killings. By Saturday afternoon the toll was
said to be over 180 but the fear was that some of the critically injured
might not live. This was the deadliest attack in Europe since the
2004 Madrid bombings. Seven attackers self-destroyed themselves,
probably after activating their suicide vests, while one died in the
exchange of re with the police. A state of national emergency was
declared by a very shaken French President Francois Hollande, who
addressed the nation on television after an emergency meeting of
the cabinet. All public places were ordered shut. People were asked
to stay indoors. Hollande called the attacks a horror. The concert
hall attack he termed an abomination, a barbaric act, and swore to
wage a merciless ght against terrorism. Curfew was imposed in
Paris and 1,500 special troops were called to help the local police.
World leaders condemned the slayings and expressed solidarity with
the French in their hour of grief.
Security experts have always dreaded simultaneous attacks at
multiple places in crowded cities, just like the Mumbai attacks in
early 1993. But clearly suicide squads can always take the best of
police and intelligence services by surprise. No city in Europe, or
for that matter, India is free from the threat of Islamist terror. Those
entrusted with the onerous task of making citizens lives safe have a
very tough, very difcult assignment. A deranged gunman motivated
by the maniac jihadi Islam can always surprise them. It seems the
gunmen in the concert hall while spraying bullets on all and sundry
loudly muttered that this was what France asked for when it sent
troops to quell the forces of the Islamic State in Syria. It could be that
the Paris attacks were a response to the reverses suffered by the IS in
the last couple of days. Whether the attacks were also connected with
the reported elimination of the British Islamist known as Jehadi John
who was behind the widely reported beheadings of several British
and American hostages was not clear. Jihadi John is said to have
died in the American air attacks in Syria. At the time of writing, the
nationality of the attackers was unknown, though it is most likely to
be French. How and where they formed a jihadi cell and if any other
members were still lurking around was the immediate headache for
the French authorities.
But what is known is that the deadly poison of jihadi Islam has
infected a section of the sizable Muslim population in Europe. It
is now a constant source of agonising fear for the peace-loving
citizens and a huge nightmare for the security forces. No police
force in the world is capable of preventing a lone-wolf attack from a
maniac jihadi willing to kill himself. Indeed, a handful of radicalized
Muslims render a vast majority of their peace-loving co-religionists
in the European society objects of fear and suspicion. Actually,
the Islamists might see percentage in provoking backlash against
ordinary Muslims. This should be avoided. But the barbarians who
kill innocents in the name of religion must be fought to the nish.
Given that almost the entire free world, including India, is now
vulnerable to such attacks, the US must take the lead under the
aegis of the United Nations to frame a global charter of action to
neutralize the growing threat of jihadi Islam. The task cannot be put
off any longer, though after each such attack such resolve has been
expressed only for it to be dissipated with the return of `business as
usual. The Paris attacks are attacks on the idea of freedom, on the
democratic way of life. Unless the free world wakes up and quells
this barbaric challenge more such attacks await the free world.

the dictum of freedom with

How it began?
This was the day on which the Press Council of India started functioning
as a moral watchdog to ensure that not only did the press maintain the high
standards expected from this powerful medium but also that it was not fettered by the inuence or threats of any extraneous factors.
Though there are several Press or Media Councils world over, the Press

exercise an authority even over the instruments of the state in its duty to
safeguard the independence of the press.

Commission had concluded that the best way of maintaining professional ethics
in journalism would be to bring into existence a body with statutory authority, of
people principally connected with industry whose duty it would be to arbitrate.
To this end the Press Council of India was established and the body that

Smartphones may soon replace wearable tness trackers by reliably measuring your heart and breathing rates even
when they are kept in pocket or a bag,
MIT researchers say.
Researchers are working on a project
called BioPhone that could track biological signals using the smartphones
accelerometer, which can
capture the small body
movements that result
from the beating of your

This data is collected when you are
not moving much - this makes it easier
to pick up such small vibrations without
having to account for lots of other bodily
movements - and the data could be used
to help gure out when you are stressed
out, and then help you cope with it,

To study the potential utility of BioPhone, researchers had a dozen study
participants sit, stand, and lie down before and after pedalling on an exercise
bike with a smartphone in their pocket
to capture data from the

the MIT Technological

The data collected
from the smartphone
was compared with data gathered
from wearable devices that are already
known to be reliable.
On average, the heart rates estimated
by analysing the smartphone data were
off by slightly more than one beat per
minute, and breathing rate estimations
were off by about a quarter of a breath
per minute, the researchers said.

Mumbai, Nov 16 (PTI):
Jindal Steel and Power
Ltd said it plans to cut
costs and divest some
non-core assets, as it
swung to a second-quarter loss due to a drop in
iron and steel sales and
a one-time charge linked
to an overseas unit. Indian steelmakers including
Tata Steel Ltd, JSW Steel

seen sales dented in the
past few quarters due to
rising imports from China,
Japan, South Korea and
Russia.
China makes nearly
half the worlds 1.6 billion tonnes of steel. With
growth slowing at home,
it is expected to export a

WADA mulls
IAAF suspension
Zurich, Nov 16:
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) could face
recommendations that include suspension from the Olympics when the
second part of the World Anti-Doping
Agencys (WADA) report is released,
according to one of the doping bodys
independent commissioners.
Any decision to suspend the IAAF
from the Games would need to be
made by the International Olympic
Committee (IOC). The IAAF is reeling from the aftermath of a major
doping scandal that has led to Russias provisional suspension from all
competition following a WADA report
that uncovered evidence of Statecontrolled doping in the country.
IAAF president Sebastian Coe has
conceded there are unlikely to be many
tomorrows for athletics [L8N1391EV]
and WADA commissioner Richard
McLaren did not rule out a provisional
suspension for the world governing
body of track and eld.

Fabulous Federer ays Berdych

q I was at my best, says Djokovic after demolishing Nishikori

London, Nov 16:

Roger Federer overcame a shaky
start to emphatically see off Tomas
Berdych in the ATP World Tour Finals
in London on Sunday.
The legendary Swiss was guilty of
some uncharacteristic errors at the
start of the rst set at the O2 Arena,
but then turned on the style to win his
Group Stan Smith opener 6-4, 6-2.
Federer, a six-time winner of the
glitzy season-ending tournament,
played with a swagger in the second
set and Berdych was unable to live
with him.
It had all started so promisingly for
sixth seed Berdych when two Federer
double-faults and a stray backhand
from the 17-time grand-slam champion put the Czech 2-0 up.
But Federer regained his compo-

of Rs 10 lakh.
In the Taimanov variation of Sicilian
defence adopted by former under
16 world champion Sethuraman of
PSPB played a positional game to
outwit Karthikeyan Murali from Tamil
Nadu.
Vidit Santosh Gujrathi recorded the
rst win of the championship, employing Caro Kann defence against
the lowest seeded player of the
championship, K Praneeth Surya of
Telangana.
In the ght between two grandmasters, Shyam Sundar dealt a blow to

when Czech made a mistake at the
net and the third seed found himself
a set up after Berdych sent a forehand long.

higher seeded Abhijit Kunte of PSPB,

a former British champion.
Earlier, Minister for Food R Kamaraj
inaugurated the championship, in the
presence of AICF general secretary
V Hariharan.

Das Arghyadip; Deep Sengupta drew
Swapnil S Dhopade; M Shyam Sundar beat Abhijit Kunte 0; Praneeth
Surya lost to Vidit Santosh Gujrathi;
Rathnakaran beat Shyam Nikhil.

Federer raised his game in the

second set, putting on a show for
an expectant crowd as he broke immediately and then came up with a
sumptuous forehand winner at the
start of the next game en route to
holding to love.
The 34-year-old produced an array
of sublime winners including a deft
backhand drop shot - as he raced into
a 4-0 lead and sealed victory in just
69 minutes.
Federer joins top seed Novak
Djokovic at the top of the group after
the world number one outclassed
Kei Nishikori in the rst game of the
tournament earlier in the day.

Berlin, Nov 16 (AFP):

Chancellor Angela Merkel and her
Cabinet are set to attend Germanys
friendly with the Netherlands on
Tuesday in a show of solidarity for
the victims of the Paris terror attacks.
The world champions found themselves at the centre of Fridays horrifying scenes in the French capital when
129 people died amidst a series of
violent attacks that also left a further
352 injured.
Several deaths took place at the
Stade de France, where Germany
were playing a friendly against the
French and the Germans opted to
spend the night in the stadium rather
than risk crossing Paris before ying
home on Saturday.

respect for the victims of

Fridays Paris attacks.
We saw Lewis dropping
off a lot with degradation
and that conrmed it was
important to take care of
the tyres.
The victory in the seasons penultimate race was

Rosbergs fth of the year,

second in a row and 13th
of his career, and secured
the German second place
in a championship already
won by his British rival.
I had good pace, its just
you cant overtake here,
said Hamilton, who started

on the front row alongside

Rosberg but could not nd
a way past his team mate
into the opening corner
despite trying hard.
I just killed my tyres. Its
such a great track but you
cant get close enough to
race, he added after his
planned two stops turned
into three.
The Briton, who clinched
his third championship
in Texas last month, has
spoken much of his wish
to emulate triple champion
Senna -- who took eight
attempts to win his home
race -- but he will have to
wait another year.
The harder he tried, the
more he suffered from tyre
degradation even if he at
least set the fastest lap as
a consolation.

Personally its an incredible achievement for me

because Ive never been
in a Fed Cup nal and I
won two of my matches,
Sharapova said.
After winning five
Grand Slam titles,
Sharapova is still seeking two other global
trophies -- the Fed Cup
and Olympic gold.
Next year, she will be in
contention for the Olympic
title, after winning bronze
in London 2012 -- representing Russia despite

having lived in Florida

since age seven.
Theres no better feeling
than being out on the court
having so many people
fly here from Russia to
support you, Sharapova
beamed on Sunday.
In an event like this
youre just not playing for
yourself, youre playing for
your teammates, for your
country.
Its a very unique feeling
and its so special.
Yet questions over her
team spirit continue to

follow her.
She has played only ve
Fed Cup ties since earning
professional status in April
2001, two of which were
this year.
A decade ago, she was
involved in a rift with her
teammate and now Russia captain Anastasia
Myskina, who threatened
to boycott the Fed Cup if
Sharapova was selected
for the Russian team,
complaining about her
fathers behaviour in the
stands.

Farias also said

after restricting Uttar Pradesh to 348 on the second day
of the Ranji Trophy Group B match here today.
Uttar Pradesh produced a solid batting display, reaching 277 for 4 in their rst innings on day one. However,
Tamilnadu bowlers responded well to bowl out the rival
team for 348.
Tamilnadu started their innings on a disastrous note as
Praveen Kumar got opener Baba Aparajith and Dinesh Karthik,
for ducks. Later, Abhinav fell to Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 2.
Indian Test discard Suresh Raina, of whom a lot
was expected, fell for 61 off the bowling of Malolan
Rangarajan.

The continuous
downpour from Sunday
morning left Chennai
under a thick sheet of
water. Many localities
were marooned and
people were evacuated
to safer zones. Boats
replaced buses in several
parts of the city and
lakes were breached
leaving residential areas
cut off. Subways became
water bodies of sorts
while lakes and ponds
were overowing.
