The 200 feet Radial
Road from Pallavaram
to OMR bore the brunt of
the rains. This morning,
the Peri eri (Keelkatalai
lake) breached and it
soon ooded the stretch.
Trafc came to a standstill.
Says Thanikachalam, a
motorist, It would have
been a disaster had there
been in the peak hour.
There are a lot of IT companies located in the
stretch.
Work to evacuate those
residing on the banks of

Bus, buzz
It was all action on Aranganathan Subway in Saidapet as

No schools,
colleges for a week
Following the monsoon fury that almost white-washed
Chennai, several educational institutions in Chennai
and Kanchipuram districts have declared holiday till
Sunday (22 November). The incessant rain forced
many colleges in Kanchipuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur
and Cuddalore to announce holiday since Deepavali.
With water-level rising in many places and possibility
of more rain, the decision to extend holidays till Sunday
has been taken.

If you are a two-wheeler rider, you
are probably used to having dogs
chase you on the city roads. But
soon, we may be seeing dogs chasing ights at Chennai airport due to
the increase in strays in the vicinity.
This does not seem far-fetched as a

The increase in the dog population
at Chennai airport is not conned to

There are many incidents where ight schedules have been disrupted or landing aircraft faced trouble due to animals straying on
to runways. In 2005, an aircraft taking off from Pune international
airport ran over a stray, which resulted in a two-hour delay of
ights.
In 2008, an Air India aircraft had a narrow escape when it hit a
nilgai during landing at Kanpur airport in Uttar Pradesh.
On 27 March 2008, a Kingsher Airlines aircraft hit a stray dog
on the runway at HAL Bangalore international airport resulting in
the aircrafts landing gear collapsing. The aircraft skidded off the
runway and its nose collapsed, and four passengers were injured.
In another incident in June 2008, some monitor lizards, jackals
and birds of prey strayed on to the secondary runway of Indira
Gandhi international airport, causing the airport to be closed for
one hour and disrupting the schedule of nearly 100 ights.

Death toll in
Chinas landslide
climbs to 25
BEIJING:
The death toll in the massive landslide that hit a village in east Chinas
Zhejiang province burying dozens
of homes climbed to 25, with 12
others still missing, ofcials said.
Only one person has been rescued so far after the landslide hit
Lishui City in Lidong village on
Friday night that buried 27 homes
in mud and rocks. Rescue efforts
have been hampered by rain today, which is expected to continue
throughout the week.
Meteorological experts have warned
against further hazards for about 2,300
rescuers who are engaged in the
search and rescue effort, state-run
Xinhua news agency reported today.
Fifty professional psychologists
have been sent to provide medical help for family members of the
victims. Staff with the Ministry of
Land and Resources have been
dispatched from Beijing to carry
out inspections in the neighbouring mountain area and prepare to
organise evacuation.

The National Press Day every

Special recognition
As a special acknowledgement of the role of reporting,
National Award has been instituted to journalist, photographers, and freelancers
excelling in print journalism in
various elds. These awards
have been conferred by the
National Press Council of India.
How it began?
This was the day on which the Press Council of India started functioning
as a moral watchdog to ensure that not only did the press maintain the high
standards expected from this powerful medium but also that it was not fettered by the inuence or threats of any extraneous factors.
Though there are several Press or Media Councils world over, the Press
Council of India is a unique entity in as-much-as this is the only body to
exercise an authority even over the instruments of the state in its duty to
safeguard the independence of the press.
Recommending the establishment of Press Council in 1956 the Ist Press
Commission had concluded that the best way of maintaining professional ethics
in journalism would be to bring into existence a body with statutory authority, of
people principally connected with industry whose duty it would be to arbitrate.
To this end the Press Council of India was established and the body that
was evolved since 16 November 1966 has not belied the objective.

roll back of protectionist trade policies.
The business leaders called for action to support trade,
investment, and employment and SME growth.
Also, to increase youth and women participation in
the labour force-including by developing national skills

WADA mulls
IAAF suspension
Zurich, Nov 16:
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) could face
recommendations that include suspension from the Olympics when the
second part of the World Anti-Doping
Agencys (WADA) report is released,
according to one of the doping bodys
independent commissioners.
Any decision to suspend the IAAF
from the Games would need to be
made by the International Olympic
Committee (IOC). The IAAF is reeling from the aftermath of a major
doping scandal that has led to Russias provisional suspension from all
competition following a WADA report
that uncovered evidence of Statecontrolled doping in the country.
IAAF president Sebastian Coe has
conceded there are unlikely to be many
tomorrows for athletics [L8N1391EV]
and WADA commissioner Richard
McLaren did not rule out a provisional
suspension for the world governing
body of track and eld.
of Rs 10 lakh.
In the Taimanov variation of Sicilian
defence adopted by former under
16 world champion Sethuraman of
PSPB played a positional game to
outwit Karthikeyan Murali from Tamil
Nadu.
Vidit Santosh Gujrathi recorded the
rst win of the championship, employing Caro Kann defence against
the lowest seeded player of the
championship, K Praneeth Surya of
Telangana.
In the ght between two grandmasters, Shyam Sundar dealt a blow to
follow her.
She has played only ve
Fed Cup ties since earning
professional status in April
2001, two of which were
this year.
A decade ago, she was
involved in a rift with her
teammate and now Russia captain Anastasia
Myskina, who threatened
to boycott the Fed Cup if
Sharapova was selected
for the Russian team,
complaining about her
fathers behaviour in the
stands.

TAMBARAM
The continuous
downpour from Sunday
morning left Chennai
under a thick sheet of
water. Many localities
were marooned and
people were evacuated
to safer zones. Boats
replaced buses in several
parts of the city and
lakes were breached
leaving residential areas
cut off. Subways became
water bodies of sorts
while lakes and ponds
were overowing.
