This document provides instructions for an electrical engineering assignment on analog communication and modulation techniques. Students are asked to design and simulate an AM broadcast transmitter and receiver based on their student ID number. The transmitter must operate within the medium wave band between 530 kHz and 1700 kHz, tuning specifically to the kHz frequency determined by the last 4 digits of the student's ID. The transmitting power must be determined by the wattage indicated by the 5th through 7th digits of the ID. Students will modulate a carrier signal with a voice message containing only their last name. They must implement the project using MATLAB and submit a written report by the deadline following specified formatting and including source code, results, and other required elements. Late submissions will be penal

American University of Ras Al Khaimah

School of Engineering

Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering

Department (EECE)

Assignment (2)

Course Name: Communication and Information Theory

Course Code: ECEN460

Due Date: Jan. 10, 2016

Instructor: Dr. Nasser Hamad

Instructions to Students:

1. The deadline date of submitting the project is 10th of Jan, 2016.

2. This project is an individual work project that is function of the student ID, and no
teamwork of students is acceptable.
3. This project is a MATLAB based simulation project to serve an analog communication
course.
4. Each student might be subjected to a personal discussion when submitting his own
project.
5. The expected outcome of this project is a clean and clear type-written report
including the following items: Description of the technology, design/simulation
methodology, source code using MATLAB and printed out results.
6. Remember to write your name and student ID on the front page of your report
documents.
7. The report must be submitted before deadline. Otherwise a reduction function is
used to evaluate the delayed reports. Given the total mark is MAXmark, the reduction
function is given by NEWmark as
{

where t is the time given in days.

Good Luck

ECEN 460 Communication Project:

1. Preliminary:
The radio regulations are an intergovernmental treaty text of the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU). It coordinates and standardized the operation of
telecommunication networks and services and advances the development of communications
technology. It covers both legal and technical issues and serves as instrument for the
international management of the radio spectrum.
As other telecommunication services, the Analog Modulation (AM, FM) broadcasting is
regulated by ITU radio regulations, according to these regulations, the AM modulation technique
is divided into three bands: 1) Long Wave from 153 to 279 kHz. 2) Medium Wave from 520 to
1710 kHz. 3) Short Wave from 2300 to 26100 kHz and FM is in the MHz Bands, from 88 MHz
to 108 MHz.

2. Project Description:
An AM broadcast transmitter/receiver tunes on the second band, i.e., from 530 kHz to 1700 kHz.
Given your student ID number of 7/10 digits, say,
X10X9X8X7X6X5X4X3X2X1, or
X7X6X5X4X3X2X1
It is required to design/simulate your AM broadcasting station including Transmitter and
Receiver that all tunes on
X5X4X3X2X1 kHz
The attainable licensed transmitting power to cover the coverage area and around in watt is given
by
X7X6X5X4 Watt
According to the above information, one can now decide on the suitable values of Amplitude
(Ac) and Frequency (fc) of the used carrier.
The message information f(t) is assumed to be a voice signal of your voice, mention your Family
Name Only.
Finally, you were assigned one of the following modulation Techniques to perform your design:
1. AM DSB-LC
2. AM DSB-SC
3. FM
