CRAFT PORT/TELNET
1.
SCOPE
1.1
Hub.
This section describes the implementation and operation of the craft port software features in the EdgeLink
1.2
Minor text changes were made to the Craft Interface menus for version 1.7.6 of the ELHUB software.
2.
A.
General Description
2.1
The Craft Port feature is a firmware function of the Controller Module. It is menu-driven and provides the
user with a method to monitor, control, and provision the EdgeLink Hub system. It supports performance monitoring and control functions such as performing loopbacks (DS-1/DS-3), switching, NIU status and control, BER testing, clearing TMS condition, setting LAPD parameters for data collection, and checking for the number of
switches and errors.
B.
2.2
The Craft Port User Interface presents the user with an interactive, text-based, menu-driven interface that
configures, monitors, and controls the ELHUB system. By connecting a terminal or modem directly to the craft
port terminal interface (a DB-9 male connector) on the front of the Controller Module, the user gains access to the
Craft Port menus.
2.3
The menu structure is a "tree" format with descending selections becoming more detailed until the command is executed. (The operator must press the ENTER key after each entry.) Messages, acknowledgments, and
error messages are displayed in response to the requested action. If illegal commands are attempted, the system
provides responses that allow analysis or correction of the problem. If the terminal is idle for 10 minutes or is disconnected, the session is automatically terminated by a default timeout mode. This mode can be disabled in the
System Settings menu. The path from the Root Menu is C, 1, 4, 7. Enter each character (e.g, C) followed by the
ENTER key.
C.
2.4
The EdgeLink Hub provides an RS-232D serial communications port for a direct or modem connection to
a "dumb" VT-100 terminal or a PC configured for VT-100 terminal emulation for craft port functions. The craft
port is accessed through a DB-9 male connector on the front of the Controller Module (left most slot of the cage).

TELNET DESCRIPTION
3.1
The ELHUB software supports a single Telnet client connection (Port 23) for accessing the craft menus.
When the local craft port is being used, the user is prevented from establishing a Telnet session; local craft port
access and Telnet access cannot occur simultaneously. However, the user can establish a TL1 Telnet session (port
3116) and perform TL1 commands at the same time. A Telnet session (port 23) will be disconnected if and when a
local craft session is started; if a Telnet session is active and someone logs into the local craft port, the Telnet user
will be immediately disconnected.
NOTE: Telnet sessions must be re-established following a System RESET.
3.2
By design, a Craft session has priority over a Telnet session; if a Craft session is active, the Telnet session
cannot terminate that session. A problem could arise if the 10-minute Telnet timeout feature has been disabled
and an active Craft session is left running. In this case, the operator will be prevented from establishing a Telnet
session at the remote ELHUB. However, the following command (not a TL1 command) allows the operator to
close the Craft session remotely from the TL1 Telnet connection (Port 3116): logout-craft-password
- Press the ENTER key after typing the logout-craft-password command. Enter the system
password (e.g., Telcosys1). Asterisks will be substituted for the password characters.
4.
A.
4.1
The AWX452G10 cable is used to connect the EdgeLink Hub to a VT-100 terminal or a personal computer.
One end of cable is a DB-9 connector that connects to the DB-9 connector located on the front of the Controller
Card and the other end is a male DB-9 connector for the terminal or personal computer. Refer to Figure 1 for the
pins and their description for the cable.

Terminal Setup
A.
5.1
The VT-100 or PC terminal must be configured so that it can communicate with the EdgeLink Hub multiplexer. Configuration of the terminal should be done before it is connected to the cage. See Table C for a list of
parameters that must be set on the terminal. The maximum baud rate cannot exceed 9600 bps.

B.
5.2
When the terminal is powered on and connected to the craft port of the cage, the user should wait approximately 5 seconds and then press the Return key twice for the "ID:" prompt. At the prompt, the user must enter the
password, which is masked from view during entry on the keyboard. Use of a valid password allows entry to the
various Menus.
Configuring User Passwords
C.
5.3
A terminal connected to the craft port interface requires a password to gain access to the unit and all the
menus for configuration and retrieval of information. The factory default setting for the password is
"TELCOSYS1.
5.4
The M13 Multiplexer card is set to factory defaults. When the unit is installed for the first time, it is recommended that the user edit the default password ("TELCOSYS1") for security.
5.5
The Select User Level menu sets or modifies the system passwords. Only the Level 1 user is allowed to
access this menu. All passwords must be between 8 and 20 characters in length, no spaces allowed. The password must include one alphabetic character and one number or symbol. There are four password levels as
described in Table D.

5.6
The software is designed so that a user at a given level can access all security levels below that level. For
example, a user at security level 2 can access levels 3 and 4, but not level 1. Refer to Table H, Menu Selections
from ELHUB Root Menu, on page 13 for a complete list of password security levels for each craft menu selection.
5.7
The System Name, Contact Person, and System Location is limited to 30 characters including spaces.
6.
6.1
The purpose of the DS1 Auto-Sense Feature is to minimize the need for human intervention during an initial install or during the populating or depopulating of DS1 ports.
6.2
The DS1 Auto-Sense Feature simplifies the process of installing, populating or depopulating DS1 ports.
During an initial install, Auto-Sense (enabled by default) scans all DS1 ports. All ports with activity (DS1 signaling), are automatically placed in an Equipped, In-Service and Monitored state. Channels without activityare automatically placed in an Unequipped, Out-of-Service, and Waiting state.
6.3
Applying an active DS1 signal to a Waiting channel will automatically configure the channel to an
Equipped, In-Service, and 5-minute Timer state. Newly activated channels go into a 5-minute timing interval to
insure the signal is valid before allowing any alarm reporting for that particular channel. If the channel activity is
removed before the 5-minute interval, the channel reverts to Out-of-Service, Unequipped and Waiting.
6.4
When a DS1 signal is applied to a channel and the 5-minute interval is completed, the channel enters into
an In-Service, Equipped, and Monitoring mode. If you want To override the 5-minute interval, perform a RESCAN. A rescan reviews the current state of the DS1 signals and reports the alarms and displays the current state in
the DS1 Input Control Menu. Each time a rescan is initiated, the timer value resets to the 5-minute interval.
When a DS1 channel is Unequipped, that channel will not be monitored, report alarms or cause
switching.
When a DS1 channel is Equipped, it can be In-service or Out-of-Service and will be monitored and
will report alarms. For the channel to switch, it must also be In-Service.
7.
DEFAULT SETTINGS
7.1
The System Administration menu is used to reset non-volatile RAM to factory defaults, one card at a time,
which includes the default password of TELCOSYS1. All default settings are provided in Table E on page 7.

the user to be notified of a new alarm even at a distance from the computer terminal. Press CTRLV to check the alarm status.
Ability to name each DS3 module to differentiate it from the others.
By default, each of the nine DS3 modules is identified as simply DS3 Module in the Root Menu
display. However, any of these modules can be identified in a more meaningful way (e.g., T3 to
Boston). To name a DS3 Module, at the Root Menu, type X, 6, 3, 1. Press ENTER after each selection. Enter a module description using up to 30 alpha-numeric characters.
Ability to name each DS1 channel to differentiate it from the others.
By default, each of the 28 DS1 channels is identified by its channel number. To give a DS1 channel
a name, at the Root Menu, type X, 1, 2, C#, 3. The C# is the channel number. Press ENTER after
each entry. Enter a description using up to 15 alpha-numeric characters.
DS3 module configurator to copy the configuration of one DS3 module to another or all.
In one step, you can copy the configuration of one DS3 module to another module or to all DS3
modules in the ELHUB. This feature is useful when identical or similar configurations are required
for multiple DS3 modules. To copy a configuration to another DS3 module or to all DS3 modules,
at the Root Menu, type C, 1, 6, 1. Press ENTER after each entry. Follow the on-screen selections to
complete the task.
Shortcut keys to view alarms and event logs
To view current alarms for any DS3 module, type A# (the # represents modules 1-9). Type AP or
LP to view alarms or event logs for the DS3 Protection Module. For example, to view the alarms
for DS3 Module 1, type A1, then press ENTER. To view event logs for DS3 Module 1, type L1,
then press ENTER. A History Alarm Log for the module will be displayed showing alarm date,
time, state, and description.
Shortcut keys to view DS3 module alarms and event logs from Controller menus
At the Controllers current alarm log and event history log, you can view log information for a DS3
module or Protect Module. For example, at the Root Menu, type C, 2, 2, 2 to access the System
Current Alarms. At this menu, enter the DS3 Module slot number (or P) only. You are now in the
Current Alarms menu for the specified DS3 module. To return to the Controller menus, type CTRL

GENERAL INFORMATION
A.
Safety Precautions
2.1
Exercise care when working near the -48 Vdc power source and connections. Potentially high electrical
currents might flow if the -48 Vdc terminals of the batteries, fuse and alarm panel or multiplexers inadvertently
short to ground. All equipment should be connected to the site ground system to reduce DS1 line noise and to provide electrical protection.
2.2
The cards contained in the ELHUB are designed to be removed or installed without removing fuses from
the fuse panel.
2.3
Circuit cards can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. Before handling any circuit cards, connect your
wrist to an equipment frame ground with an approved anti-static wrist strap (EMX031-1). Ensure that all circuit
cards removed from the equipment are properly stored in anti-static packing material (PKG033-1). When working
with circuit cards, always place them on an electrically grounded, approved, anti-static mat.
B.
Ordering Information
2.4
Product manuals can be ordered from Order Administration at 1-800-221-2849. For ELHUB ordering
information, see Section 875-102-003, Ordering Information/Part Numbers/Cable Information.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW
A.
Introduction
3.1
The ELHUB is a high-density single chassis design that allows service delivery expansion in DS3 increments of up to 9 M13s. Figure 1 shows a fully loaded ELHUB. Essentially, the ELHUB equates to 9
EdgeLink100s in a single chassis. The EdgeLink100's single DS3 (28 DS1s) design is perfect when service delivery growth won't exceed 28 DS1s; the ELHUB (up to nine DS3s/252 DS1s) is well equipped to handle the highcapacity needs of a central office. The ELHUB differs from EdgeLink100 by providing a 1:9 protection architecture, versus the 1:1 protection of the EdgeLink100. The ELHUB's 1:9 architecture is the key design feature that
reduces the product to its compact size.
SECTION 875-102-001
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
3.2
The ELHUB is a self-contained unit capable of multiplexing up to 252 DS1 channels into as many as 9
industry standard DS3 B3ZS data channels. Using standard M13 or C-Bit framing, the ELHUB is capable of transmitting and receiving up to 252 DS1 signals over nine electrical DS3 interfaces. Receive circuitry demultiplexes the
DS3 B3ZS electrical signals into its 252 DS1 components.
3.3
With the use of the Protection card, the ELHUB offers 1:N (DSX-1/DS3) redundancy and protection. The
28 DS1 low-speed channels and high-speed interface are combined on each DS3 Module (traffic card) occupying
one card slot each. Up to 9 DS3 Modules can be installed in the cage (see Figure 1). The Protection card occupies
the 10th card slot. When the unit is fully configured with nine DS3 modules (traffic cards) and a protection module,
the protection provided is 1:9. The unit can be employed as a DS3 B3ZS electrical input to digital microwave or
other transmission systems.
3.4
The Protection Module provides 1:N protection, depending on the number of DS3 modules
installed.
Up to nine DS3 modules (M13 traffic cards) are installed in one chassis.
SECTION 875-102-001
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
3.5
The ELHUB can be installed in any standard 19 or 23 rack (the 23 rack is recommended to allow for
easier cable routing). A maximum of five ELHUBs can be installed in a single rack. For complete installation information, see the Installation Guide, Section ELHUB-INSTALL.
Transmit Signal Flow
3.6
Figure 2 shows a block diagram of a single ELHUB traffic card (DS3 Module) and protection card with up
to 28 T1s multiplexed into a DS3 electrical signal. Up to nine DS3 modules (traffic cards) can be installed into a
single chassis, allowing 1:N protection. Protection switching and signal integrity are functions of the Controller
Module.
3.7
In the transmit direction, the DS3 Module takes the incoming T1 low-speed signals, adds line conditioning
and multiplexes the 28 DS1 signals with DS3 overhead data and stuffing bits to produce an industry-standard DS3
mastergroup structured data stream.
3.8
The DS3 data and timing signals are applied and converted into a B3ZS signal for coaxial interface to
external equipment. In a 1:N protection configuration, the Controller Module monitors the integrity of the transmit
data signal from each DS3 Module and the protection card to determine if protection switching is required.
Receive Signal Flow
3.9
In the receive direction, the DS3 Module converts the incoming DS3 B3ZS signal into a unipolar signal for
interface to the DS3 demux circuitry. In a 1:N protection configuration, the Controller Module monitors the integrity of the transmit data signal from each DS3 Module and the protection card to determine if protection switching
is required.
3.10
The DS3 data and timing signals are received by the demux circuitry where they are demultiplexed from
the DS3 into the 28 DS1 signals. All stuffing bits added for bit synchronization at the transmitting end of the system are deleted from the data stream prior to line signal encoding.

Configuration Overview
NOTE: For complete installation information, see the Installation Guide, Section ELHUB-INSTALL.
3.12
The ELHUB (shown in Figure 1 on page 3) can be equipped with up to 9 DS3 modules (Part No.
CCA516G1) and associated relay cards (Part #CCA511G1) populated for 28 T1s with a 44.736 Mb/s output. The
system also contains one Controller Module (CCA513G1). When 1:N protection is required, a DS3 Module is
installed in the protection slot labeled P. The protection slot uses a unique Protection Relay Card (CCA512G1).
All DS3 modules and their associated relay cards are identical, except for the relay card that is used in the protection slot; only the Protection Relay Card is unique. Any DS3 module can be installed in the slot marked P.
3.13
The DS3 Module with associated relay card contains all circuitry necessary to interface with DS1 (AMI or
B8ZS) to DS3 (B3ZS). When switching occurs, the entire traffic card (DS3 Module) is switched from on-line to
off-line on a fault. A single Controller Module controls and monitors the performance of the system.
3.14
The ELHUB is constructed as a rack-mountable cage that can be installed in the customer premises and
central office standard 19" or 23" equipment racks and cabinets. The cage measures 17.15-inches wide (without

mounting ears) by 8.75 inches high by 10 inches deep. The cage is used for standard temperature operation. For
further specifications, see Specifications, Section 875-102-004.
3.15
The back panel includes: connectors to accommodate DS3 signal and DS1 low-speed interfacing; wirewrap pins for Major, Minor, Far-End, and Critical alarms reporting; two Ethernet ports; and A & B power feeds.
Figure 3.A shows a rear view of the ELHUB (standard chassis). Figure 3.B shows a rear view of the ELHUB (universal chassis).

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
D.
Equipment Interfaces
3.16
The DS3 Module, in conjunction with the relay card, contains all circuitry necessary to interface with the
industry standard DS1 electrical signals with 1:N redundancy using the Protection Module. The DS1 (1 through 9)
electrical signal interfaces are two 64-pin female connectors, transmit (OUT) and receive (IN), located on the back
of the cage. These mate with a male right side (DS1 OUT) cable and a male left side (DS1 IN) cable. See Figure
3.B (ELHUB standard chassis) or Figure 3.B (ELHUB universal chassis).
3.17
The electrical B3ZS DS3 (1 through 9) TX (Transmit) and RX (Receive) interfaces use external coaxial
cable through two BNC-type connector jacks on the back of the cage.
Power
3.18
Primary power is coupled to a pair of 3-pin headers (A and B) located on the bottom left side of the rear
panel (see Figure 3.B (ELHUB standard chassis) or Figure 3.B (ELHUB universal chassis). These provide separate A and B power connections with separate returns for the fused -48 Vdc power source. If only a single power
source is used, A and B should be jumpered in parallel to suppress power failure alarm.
Grounding
3.19
The cage is equipped with a long barrel ground lug attached at the rear upper left side of the cage. The customer is required to ground per company policies and procedures.
Contact Closures
3.20
The cage provides two wire-wrap pin blocks for interfacing office alarms: FE (Far-End), MNA (Minor),
MJA (Major), CRA (Critical) alarms, and one COM (Common). These alarm points are derived from four dry, normally open, contact closures located on the ELHUB. These contact closures are rated at 0.3 Amp @110 Vdc or .3
Amp @125 Vac. The wire-wrap pins are supplied to provide adequate wire-wrap termination. These are located on
the right top corner of the rear of the cage.
E.
System Management
Craft Port Interface
3.21
The Craft Port Interface allows customers direct access to configuration settings and detailed system information normally associated with a monitoring system. A DB-9 connector on the front of the Controller Module
provides a connection for VT100 compatible terminals, a personal computer (PC) or a modem. Using a VT100 terminal, the user can execute commands or retrieve system information (e.g., setting thresholds) and perform maintenance tasks (e.g., protection switching). See Craft Port/Telnet, Section 875-002-002 for complete information.
3.22
Using a terminal server or modem, the user can execute commands or retrieve system information, and perform maintenance tasks via Telnet or SNMP.
Ethernet Interface
3.23
Two 10BaseT Ethernet communications interfaces are provided as shielded RJ-45 connectors (ETHERNET) on the right rear corner of the cage (see Figure 3.A on page 7 (ELHUB standard chassis) or Figure 3.B on
page 7 (ELHUB universal chassis). These are standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet connections to the LAN. With the
TCP/IP based protocol, the user can access to the LAN network. The Ethernet ports will normally carry Ethernet
data to/from a Network Management Station (NMS) for the purpose of SNMP management of the system, Telnet

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
capability to the local unit and the remote ELHUB, and full software updating using Trivial File Transfer Protocol
(TFTP). It is possible to daisy-chain multiple ELHUBs within a single LAN network. For further information,
see Connecting the Ethernet Network in the Installation Guide, Section ELHUB-INSTALL.
SNMP
3.24
The SNMP Agent embedded in the ELHUB implements both standard and proprietary Management Information Base(s) (MIB)s. It will support SNMP Version 1 and MIB II. SNMP uses the EdgeLinks TCP/IP addresses.
Sets, Gets, and Traps are supported. For more information on SNMP, see Using the SNMP Agent, Section 875003-002.
C-Bit Parity Framing
3.25
Each DS3 facility in the ELHUB, when configured for C-Bit Parity framing, provides three overhead bits
available for carrying "user-defined" traffic. These bits are called C-Bits. The ELHUB supports two modes of operation for the C-Bits, data link enabled and data link disabled. In the data link enabled configuration, the C-bits are
used to carry IP packets between an ELHUB DS3 Module and a remote EL100. Via this point-to-point IP link,
SNMP, TL1 and Telnet Craft management of the remote EL100 is supported.
3.26
In the data link disabled configuration, the C-bits are used to carry HDLC (LAPD formatted) packets
between an ELHUB DS3 module and a remote DS3 endpoint. In this mode, the HDLC packets contain user-configured identification parameters. These identification codes transmitted by the ELHUB DS3 Modules are accessible via the craft interface, at the DS3 module level, and consist of parameters such as Equipment Identification
Code (EIC), Frame Identification Code (FIC), etc. The craft also provides an additional interface that displays the
identification codes received from the remote unit on the DS3 facility.
LAPD
3.27
Link Access Procedure-D (LAPD) uses the D channel of the C-Bit communications to carry data. Using
the craft terminal, parameters such as Equipment Identification Code (EIC) and Frame Identification Code (FIC))
can be set, and data is received back according to these parameters settings.
DS1 Auto-Sense
3.28
The purpose of the DS1 Auto-Sense Feature is to minimize the need for human intervention during an initial install or during the populating or depopulating of DS1 ports. For a complete description of this feature, see
DS1 Auto-Sense Feature in Section 875-002-002, Craft Port/Telnet.
Telnet Client Connection
3.29
The ELHUB software supports a single Telnet client connection (Port 23) for accessing the craft menus.
When the local craft port is being used, the user is prevented from establishing a Telnet session; local craft port
access and Telnet access cannot occur simultaneously. However, the user can establish a Telnet session and perform
TL1 commands at the same time. For further information, see Craft Port/Telnet, Section 875-002-002.
NOTE: Telnet sessions must be re-established following a System RESET.
TL1
3.30
There are three TL1 access methods: TL1 telnet on port 3116; two TCP connections on port 3786. For
more detailed information on TL1, see TL1 Commands, Section 875-005-002.
SECTION 875-102-001
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
F.
System Provisioning
3.31
All option settings are software-controlled. The operational provisioning of the ELHUB is performed
through the Craft Port/Telnet using menu-driven commands or through SNMP over the Ethernet network. See
Craft Port/Telnet, Section 875-002-002 and Using the SNMP Agent, Section 875-003-002.
G.
Equipment Protection
3.32
The ELHUB provides a 1-for-9 redundancy scheme where the DS3 Module (traffic card) in slot P (Protection) of the chassis provides redundancy protection switching for the other installed DS3 modules (maximum 9
cards) in the chassis.
NOTE: The DS3 Module installed in the Protection slot is identical to the other DS3 modules. However,
the associated protection relay card in the Protection Slot is not identical to the other relay cards. See Section 875-102-003, Unit Configuration, Plug-In, and Cable Compatibility, for complete part number
information.
For an installed DS3 Module to be considered for redundancy protection, the DS3 Module must be capable
of communicating and exchanging configuration information with the ELHUB Controller Module. Once
communication is initiated and configuration is complete, the DS3 Module enters the "Ready/Active" state.
This is the normal operating state for a traffic card. In this state, the card is operational and carrying traffic.
For the Protection Module, after communication is initiated and configuration is complete, the Protection
Module enters the "Ready/Standby" state. This is the normal operating state of the Protection Module when
it is not performing redundancy operation.
The ELHUB implements a "1-for-9 redundancy" priority scheme where the Traffic card exhibiting the
worse integrity is selected as the protection candidate. Table A lists the priorities, 1 being the highest
priority.
Table A. Protection Switching Priorities
Priority
DS3-related errors/failures
DS2-related errors/failures
DS1-related errors/failures
SECTION 875-102-001
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Traffic card, the Protection Traffic card enters its "protecting" state and the Traffic card enters its
"protected" state. While in this state, the protection LED on the Controller Module is activated. During this
state, the "integrity" of the Protection Traffic card is continually compared against the "integrity" of the
Traffic card. When the ELHUB system determines that the failed Traffic card can again support service
(the integrity of the Traffic card is as good or better than the integrity of the Protection Traffic card), an
automatic switchback (revert) of traffic is initiated.
For an auto revert to occur, the Traffic card must exhibit 15 seconds of continuous "as good or better"
integrity than the Protection Traffic card. If at any time during the interval the Traffic card exhibits worse
integrity, the interval is restarted. This process continues during the entire time the Traffic card is in a
"protected" state and the Protection Traffic card is in a "protecting" state.
Switching for DS1-Related Failures
3.34
In the event of a failure for DS1 related errors (priority level 5), the Protection Traffic card is configured as
the failed Traffic card and only the RX traffic is bridged between the two cards. The TX path is not immediately
switched to the Protection Traffic card. The reason for this behavior is to prevent a DS3 interruption due to only
DS1 level failures.
NOTE: If all 28 DS1 lines exhibit an error, the DS1 failure is treated the same as the Switching for
Non-DS1 Related Failures on page 10. Once the configuration of the Protection Traffic card is complete and the RX path is bridged to the Protection Traffic card, the "DS1 integrity monitoring" state is
entered. While in this state, a periodic integrity comparison (200 ms cycle) between the Protection Traffic
card and Traffic card is performed over a 15-second interval (75 sample points). If the Traffic card exhibits
good or better integrity for more sample points, traffic is maintained on the Traffic card and the RX bridge
to the Protection Traffic card is disabled. In this case, the protection switch was not completed (TX path
not affected).
If the Protection Traffic card exhibits better integrity for more sample points during the interval, the TX
data path is switched to the Protection Traffic card, and the Traffic card enters the "protected" state and the
Protection Traffic card enters the "protecting" state. While in this state, the Controller Modules protection
LED is activated and auto-revert processing described in "Switching for Non-DS1 Related Failures on
page 10 is initiated.
Second Failures
3.35
If the ELHUB is currently protecting a failed Traffic card and another Traffic card exhibits a failure condition (second failure in the chassis), the Traffic card with the worse integrity is given priority for access to the Protection Traffic card. The priorities listed in Table A on page 10 are used to determine access to the Protection
Traffic card.
If the second failure has priority, an auto revert to the original failed card is performed, followed by a
configuration of the Protection Traffic card (to match the configuration of the second failed Traffic card)
and a switch of traffic to the Protection Traffic card. Depending on the priority level of the first and second
failures, the methods described in Switching for Non-DS1 Related Failures on page 10 and Switching for DS1-Related Failures on page 11 are followed.
NOTE: For the scenario where the second failure has priority over the first failure, an auto revert is initiated and the first failed Traffic card is returned to its unprotected state.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
the failed Traffic cards exhibits the same or better integrity than the Protection Traffic card.
A second higher priority failure, which will cause the auto-revert procedure to be initiated immediately,
before the start of protection switching for the second failure.
Manual and Forced Revert
3.40
The ELHUB supports two methods of operator-controlled revert (switchback). The manual revert method
is accessible through the user interfaces (SNMP and Craft), as well as a push button on the Controller Module front
panel. The Manual Revert allows the user to revert traffic back to a DS3 Module (traffic card) as long as the traffic
card is installed (present) and operational (not dead, i.e., can communicate with the Controller Module). When
manual revert is initiated, the "protected" Traffic card is configured per the current configuration of the "protecting"
Protection Traffic card and all RX and TX data paths are switched back to the Traffic card. After the switch is complete, the Protection Traffic card returns to its normal standby mode.
3.41
The forced revert works the same way as the manual revert, except the forced revert allows the user to
switch traffic back to a Traffic card slot regardless of the state of that traffic card/slot. Therefore, the card can be
"not present, or "dead," and the ELHUB will switch back the TX and RX data paths to the Traffic card. The forced
revert is only accessible through the SNMP and Craft menu interfaces.
TMS and TMS Threshold Exceeded
3.42
In order to prevent "thrashing" due to intermittent failures on a Traffic card or intermittent facility problems, the ELHUB maintains a "too many switch" TMS count per card. The count is incremented each time a switch
or revert occurs. This includes protection switches, auto reverts after a protection switch is completed, and reverts
due to DS1 integrity monitor (see Switching for DS1-Related Failures on page 11).
3.43
The TMS threshold is set to four and is checked before the protection switch or auto-revert. To exceed the
threshold, the switches must have occurred in a ten-minute interval. Without operator intervention, the "lock-out"
due to TMS exceeded will be maintained for a 10-minute period, after which time the system will clear the lock
out.
Disabling Protection Switching and Auto Revert
3.44
The ELHUB provides chassis level and card level controls for disabling protection switching and autorevert processing. The operator is prevented from changing the protection switch lock while an upgrade or a switch
is in progress.
When switch lock is enabled at the chassis level, the current protection state of all installed cards is frozen.
Protection switches and auto reverts are locked out regardless of what events occur in the chassis (this
includes cards being removed from the chassis or cards failing in the chassis).
Furthermore, when switch lock is enabled, a minor alarm condition is initiated and the protection LED on
the controller blinks for the duration of chassis switch lock. The chassis level switch lock has priority over
the card level switch lock described below.
Switch lock can be configured at the card level for each card installed in the chassis. When protection
switching is disabled for a Traffic card, the Traffic card is not considered for protection switching due to
"integrity events" such as DS3 LOS and BER. There are exceptions to this protection switch lockout for
an active Traffic card-carrying traffic, which include detection of a dead card, removal of a card from the
chassis, and operator-initiated manual switch.
SECTION 875-102-001
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
If protection switching is disabled for the Protection Traffic card (at the card level), auto-revert processing
is disabled. The system will not perform auto-revert processing while the Protection Traffic card is in the
"protecting" state. Overrides to this include detection of a dead Protection Traffic card, removal of the
Protection Traffic card, and operator-initiated manual/forced revert.
Enabling switch lock at the Traffic/Protection card level generates a minor alarm, and in addition causes
the active LED on the affected Traffic card to blink. Traffic cards with switch lock enabled appear to the
user (via craft and SNMP) as online locked.
Storing the Protection State of the Chassis
3.45
The protection state of the system is stored on the Protection Traffic card. As long as the Protection Traffic
card remains active and installed in the chassis, the Controller Module can be removed and re-inserted and the system will retain the protection switch information without interrupting data transport.
3.46
In the event of the Protection Traffic card failure or removal of the Protection Traffic card or complete
power down of the chassis, the ELHUB system will relearn the required protection switching state of the system.
Configuration of the Protection Traffic Card
3.47
When a protection switch occurs, the configuration of the failed Traffic card is sent to the Protection Traffic
card, thus overwriting any existing Protection Traffic card configuration. While a Traffic card is "protected," all
user configurations for this Traffic card must be directed to the Protection Traffic card in chassis slot P.
3.48
If the operator configures the Protection Traffic card while it is in the "protecting" state, and then an auto
revert or manual revert is initiated, the current configuration of the Protection Traffic card is moved to the "protected" traffic card. Any configuration that was performed to the "protected" traffic card is overwritten with the
configuration from the active "protecting" traffic card.
Monitoring of the Protection Traffic Card
3.49
The ELHUB supports background diagnostics of the Protection Traffic card to detect any protection card
faults that could prevent the ELHUB from completing an automatic protection switch and successful redundancy of
a failed Traffic card. The Protection Traffic card is tested against each installed Traffic card every six minutes,
allowing the entire chassis to be scanned (9 cards max) in one hour. The tests will continuously cycle through all
installed Traffic cards.
While the Protection Traffic card is available (i.e., in a "standby" state), the system will periodically bridge
Rx data from a selected Traffic card to the Protection Traffic card. This bridging of the RX data does not
affect traffic. During this protection-monitoring interval, the Protection Traffic card is configured as the
selected Traffic card and the integrity of the Protection Traffic card is compared against the integrity of the
selected Traffic card. Assuming good integrity of the Traffic card, if the Protection Traffic card is deemed
bad, protection availability is disabled for the current selected Traffic card. Disabling of availability causes
a minor alarm condition in the chassis.
NOTE: Because the periodic testing not only tests the Protection Traffic card, but also the Rx data path,
the system cannot differentiate between a failed data path and a failed Protection Traffic card. Therefore,
protection availability is recorded on a per-card basis. The system periodically determines the ability of
the Protection Traffic card to protect each installed Traffic card. When protection availability is disabled
for a Traffic card, the system will not initiate protection switching for that Traffic card.
SECTION 875-102-001
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
For example, if the data path between slot 2 and the Protection Traffic card has failed, but the Protection
Traffic card has not failed, the periodic testing can only determine that the Protection Traffic card cannot
protect slot 2. When the Protection Traffic card is tested against slot 3, the testing could indicate that the
Protection Traffic card is able to protect slot 3, and thus protection is available for slot 3, but not for slot 2.
3.50
The Controller Module has a microprocessor that monitors various alarm point functions throughout the
ELHUB, and performs the following functions:
3.51
Uses lockout software to isolate a fault condition to a specific card, suppressing down-line
faults due to sympathetic alarm conditions
Performs automatic switching from the defective Traffic card to the Protection Traffic card
Calculates DS3 BER for the on-line and Protection Traffic card
Calculates the BPV (Bipolar Violation) error-second performance for each DS1 low-speed and
DS3 channel inputs
Provides remote alarm reporting - external to the equipment, via relay contact closures, to indicate Major, Minor, Critical and Far-End alarm conditions
Configuration Management: Enter, edit, delete, and retrieve provisionable parameters; operate
and release controls, including loopback and switching, enable/disable Telnet timeout, etc.
Fault Management: Clear and view current alarms, including 100-event alarm history log
System Administration: Login, initialize, edit password; select baud rates; enter/edit/delete
user, etc.
SNMP: Both standard and proprietary MIBs (supports SNMP version 1 and MIB II)
TL1: Security Commands (activating or cancelling a session and retrieve header); Fault Monitoring Command (retrieve alarms or conditions and report autonomous responses, PM Commands and CM Commands)

This section describes the new alarm suppression feature found in the current version of the ELHUB soft-
3.53
With this version of the ELHUB software, alarms can be suppressed for the traffic-carrying modules in
individual slots (1-9 and the protection slot). The alarm suppression feature has two states, ON and OFF. The
default setting is OFF.
3.54
SECTION 875-102-001
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The alarm suppression feature cannot be set to ON if the module is inactive or monitored.
When manual or revert switching occurs, the card becoming active will have the same alarmsuppression state as the card that is becoming inactive.
I.
The following alarms will not be suppressed by the alarm suppression feature under any circumstances:
Temperature alarms.
Power alarms.
Card-removal alarms.
Applications
3.56
This section describes system application possibilities of the ELHUB to address specific network requirements.
3.57
In a potential application, the DS3 B3ZS electrical signal is received from the network and demultiplexed
in the ELHUB into its component DS1 data streams to Access45/60 product to various services. Incoming DS1
data streams from Access45/60 are multiplexed at the ELHUB to the DS3 level. The DS3 electrical signal is interfaced in industry standard B3ZS line coding to the network.

remote loopback will drop previous loopback). Figure 7 on page 19 illustrates examples of DS3 Facility, Terminal,
and Remote Facility Loopback.
NOTES:
- The ELHUB must be out-of-service before performing loopbacks.
- Individual DS1 or all channels may be selected when performing loopbacks.
- DS3 Loopbacks performed via a Telnet/Craft session are prohibited.
- The DS3 Remote Facility Loopback is only applicable in C-Bit Mode. The ELHUB does not support
DS3 Remote Facility loopbacks when in M13 mode. The path from the Root Menu is X, 1, 1, 1. The X

3.61
The function of the BERT is to generate and detect a test pattern internally to the system and to check DS1
line integrity. This will provide the capability to verify the quality of connections from the ELHUB to DS1 D-mark
locations.
SECTION 875-102-001
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
3.62
The customer has the ability to internally generate a Pseudo-Random Bit Sequence "2-15-1" (PRBS) compatible with the PRBSs generated from test sets, in the mux/demux direction for individual, or all DS1s, using the
craft terminal (see Craft Port/Telnet section for menu selections).
3.63
At a remote Channel Service Unit (CSU) (see Figure 8), or remote loop-up of the DS1s via an NIU loopcode or smart jack, the tester can view DS1 performance data and check if errors are being detected on the line.
NOTE: Transmitting of NIU loop-up codes must be inactive before enabling PRBS transmission on DS1
for monitoring Bit Error Rate.

3.64
The Network Interface Unit (NIU) allows customers to use the ELHUB as a complete termination, without
adding additional T1 NIU shelves or circuit packs. NIU functions of remote signal loopbacks for T1 line testing
will assist in isolating line problems between the Network Element (NE) and the Central Office (CO).
3.65
The NIU feature can send either a standard loop-up code in the transmit direction of the DS1 path or send a
facility-2 loop-up code in the transmit direction of the DS3 path (see Figure 9). Compatible units at remote locations will detect the appropriate loop-up code and place the applicable channel(s) into an equipment loopback
toward the ELHUB. When the test is finished, a loop down code is sent in the transmit direction to terminate the
loopback (see the Craft/Telnet section for menus).

CONTROLLER MODULE
5.1
The Controller Module contains the firmware that controls the ELHUB's operation (see leftmost slot of
Figure 11 on page 23). The firmware allows the Controller Module to perform tests on the traffic cards and initiate
loopbacks.
5.2
When the ELHUB is 1:N protected, the Controller Module monitors and automatically initiates a card
switch to maintain traffic when a fault condition is detected. The Controller Module also controls the office alarm
contact relays.
5.3
The alarm inputs to the Controller Module enter at the control bus. When an alarm signal is received, the
corresponding alarm LED on the front of the Controller Module illuminates. The card has relay contact closures to
activate CR (Critical), MJ (Major), MN (Minor), and FE (Far-End) alarms, when an alarm signal is active.
5.4
A DB-9 male connector on the front cover of the Controller Module provides an RS-232 craft interface to a
terminal or modem to execute commands or retrieve system information.

Operational Description
5.6
See Figure 2 on page 5 for a detailed block diagram of the operation of the ELHUB.
DS1 Interface
5.7
The DS1 section contains up to nine groups of 28 DS1 I/Os, each supporting a 100-ohm balanced line. In
the receive direction, dual DS1 NRZ data and clock signals are connected to the T1 Line Interface Unit (LIU). The
LIU outputs the data as Tip and Ring, which in turn pulses the output transformer. The resulting signal, on the output side of the transformer, is a balanced half-width bipolar signal. The transmit signals are then fed to a high-speed
switch which is controlled by the microprocessor.
SECTION 875-102-001
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
5.8
In the transmit direction, the incoming DS1 signal is fed through a transformer with a 1:2 ratio. This signal
is then connected to the Tip and Ring inputs where it produces a DS1 (data and clock) signal.
M13 Traffic Card Mux/Demux
5.9
The DS3 Module with associated relay card accepts up to 28 DS1 (data and clock) signals and muxes them
into an electrical DS3 clock and data signal. It also demultiplexes the electrical DS3 clock and data signal into 28
DS1 (data and clock) signals.
Protection Switching
5.10
When the system is operated in a protected mode, the protection scheme is 1:N. The Controller Module
switches the affected Traffic Card to the Protection Traffic card. See Equipment Protection on page 10 for a
complete description of protection switching.
Alarm Drivers
5.11
The Controller Module drives the alarm relays for the unit. The relay outputs are wire-ored, on the back
right side of the cage. These alarms are Critical, Major, Minor, and Far-End.
Download Capability
5.12
The Controller Module software can be downloaded over the Ethernet using TFTP from the Telco Systems
FTP site. TFTP is used to download an ELHUB Controller with the latest software download file. This downloaded
file contains software images for the Controller and the DS3 module(s). To download a file from a TFTP site, the
following are necessary:
- The user must be logged in at the Craft Port.
- The user must know the address of the TFTP server and the file name to be downloaded.
- The LAN IP address, LAN subnet mask, and LAN gateway IP address must be set on the ELHUB.
Dc-to-Dc Converter
5.13
The ELHUB accepts two sets of redundant -48 Vdc input power. Both the supply and return lines have isolated fault paths. The converter supplies the primary +5 Vdc for the Controller Module. The power circuit also provides a firmed 5 Vdc interface to and from the backplane, which allows the critical relay to be activated in the event
of total 5 Vdc failure on the module.

SCOPE
1.1
This section provides information on how to communicate with the EdgeLink Hub (ELHUB) Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent. Because different SNMP applications have different user interfaces,
the procedural details for performing network management operations will vary depending on which platform is
being used, and are not discussed here.
1.2
This section was updated to add descriptions of each node in the proprietary MIBs. See Table B on page 6
and Table C on page 13.
2.
SNMP DESCRIPTION
2.1
SNMP is an industry-standard management tool set that is incorporated as an integral feature of the
ELHUB. It is a management protocol for monitoring and controlling devices and for the exchange of information
or objects. By configuring the IP addresses of the ELHUB to accept SNMP messages addressed to it, the unit can
be configured and monitored through an SNMP Network Management Station (NMS).
2.2
The SNMP NMS uses two methods, polling and interrupts, to obtain information from devices. The NMS
polls the devices or agents for information such as performance statistics and status information, using GET commands, or to issue configuration commands using SET. The devices or agents in the ELHUB send messages called
Traps to interrupt the manager in response to thresholds, events, and alarm conditions.
A.
System IP Management
2.3
A single IP management interface to the ELHUB is provided through the Ethernet connector (Port 1) on
the rear of the ELHUB. Each DS3 Module, if configured for C-Bit IP mode, supports an IP over C-Bit interface for
management of a single remote EL100 (i.e., the EL100 that is connected to the other end of the DS3). This IP over
Page 1 of 28
SECTION 875-003-002
SNMP AGENT
C-Bit is meant for downstream flow-through management from the ELHUB DS3 Module to the remote EL100. It
is not intended to provide upstream management into the DS3 Module. The second Ethernet connector on the rear
of the ELHUB (Port 2) is intended for use in daisy-chaining multiple ELHUBs as described in the procedure
below. Port 2 is not intended to be used as a second management interface. The ELHUB supports only one management IP address.
2.4
Once the ELHUB is configured with appropriate IP settings, the NMS can point to the local address of the
ELHUB through an Ethernet LAN connection.
IMPORTANT: The ELHUB uses a private IP network internal to the chassis. The traffic on this internal
network is not routed to the Ethernet port - it remains internal to the chassis. However, the IP subnet
address used internally MUST NOT CONFLICT with any customers external IP network. By default, the
setting for this backplane network is the class C address of 192.168.99.x, with a fixed subnet mask of
255.255.255.0. In the event that this default address conflicts with your IP network, the backplane network address can be changed. To change the backplane network address:
1. Obtain your LAN IP address, LAN subnet mask, and LAN gateway IP address.
2. At the ELHUB Root Menu, type C, 1, 5. (Press the Enter key after each selection).
3. At the System IP Addresses Menu, type 4 (Chassis Backplane Address) to set the new backplane
address. Enter a new unused Class C address.
4. Cycle power to the entire chassis to invoke the new IP addressing.
NOTE: The new backplane address is stored in non-volatile RAM and will not be erased - even when the
chassis is reset to factory defaults.
2.5
B.
MIBs Supported
2.6
The SNMP Agent embedded in the ELHUB implements both standard and proprietary Management Information Bases (MIBs). Sets, Gets, and Traps are supported.

1.
SCOPE
1.1
This section describes the implementation and operation of the TL1 (Translation Language 1) command
syntax and its application to the EdgeLink Hub M13 distribution hub.
NOTE: An understanding of TL1 concepts is required for the user to provision or maintain the system.
An understanding of the TL1 command syntax grammatical structure is required. Refer to
GR-833-CORE Issue 4, June 2000 and GR-831 GR-831-CORE Issue 1, November 1996.
1.2
The pid has changed from ROOT to ROOTL1*. See "Opening a Telnet Session" below.
2.
TL1 ACCESS
A.
2.1
There are three TL1 access methods: TL1 telnet on port 3116; two TCP connections on port 3786. To
access the TL1 by opening a telnet session:
1. At the Connect screen, type the Host Name: address of the EdgeLink Hub.
2. At the port, type 3116
3. At the terminal, type vt100
Connect Screen Example:
Host Name: 129.200.67
SECTION 875-005-002
TL1 COMMANDS
Port: 3116
TermType: vt100
4. Select Connect.
5. To activate user, type:
ACT-USER:[tid]:[aid]:ctag::pid; (aid=ROOT and pid=ROOTL1*)
6. To end session, type:
CANC-USER:[tid]:[aid]:ctag;
NOTE: The three TL1 sessions can be active concurrently.
2.2
The tid/sid in TL1 is equal to the user-configurable System Name stored in NVRAM. If the name is
changed, the system will be updated. The user-configurable name must NOT contain any spaces.
2.3
TL1 alarm reporting has 84 alarms that can be processed. As more alarms are generated, subsequent alarms
will be dropped and TL1 alarm reporting may become out-of-sync. On initial turn-up using TL1, it is recommended that all EdgeLink Hub current alarms be cleared. Do this by viewing the current alarms using the craft port
terminal, and by troubleshooting to clear any standing alarms.
2.4
Figure 1 shows a TL1 Telnet application using a Network Management Station (NMS) to access the
EdgeLink Hub through the Ethernet port. The EdgeLink Hub is connected to the LAN through the Ethernet connection on the right rear side of the unit. For complete information on establishing Ethernet connections, refer to
the Installation Guide, Section ELHUB-INSTALL.

TL1 COMMANDS
B.
Closing an Active Craft Session from a TL1 Telnet Connection (Port 3116)
2.5
By design, a Craft session has priority over a Telnet session; if a Craft session is active, the Telnet session
cannot terminate that session. A problem could arise if the 10-minute Telnet timeout feature has been disabled and
an active Craft session is left running. In this case, the operator will be prevented from establishing a Telnet session
at the remote ELHUB. However, the following command (not a TL1 command) allows the operator to close the
Craft session remotely from the TL1 Telnet connection (Port 3116):
logout-craft-password
- Press the ENTER key after typing this command. Enter the system password (e.g., TELCO).
Asterisks will be substituted for the password characters.
