USB flash drives were first commercially sold in 2000 and helped replace floppy disks by providing greater storage capacity and faster data transfer speeds in a compact portable form. USB implements connections to storage devices through standards like MSC that allow various devices to appear like familiar storage volumes that can be accessed by manipulating files and directories. USB flash drives are also known as thumb drives and can hold gigabytes of data, with support built into most operating systems to allow simply plugging them in for portable file storage and transfer between computers.

USB implements connections to storage devices using a set of standards called the USB mass

storage device class (MSC or UMS). This was at first intended for traditional magnetic and optical
drives and has been extended to support flash drives. It has also been extended to support a wide
variety of novel devices as many systems can be controlled with the familiar metaphor of file
manipulation within directories. The process of making a novel device look like a familiar device is
also known as extension. The ability to boot a write-locked SD c
Trek Technology and IBM began selling the first USB flash drives commercially in 2000. Trek
Technology sold a model under the brand name "ThumbDrive", and IBM marketed the first such
drives in North America with its product named the "DiskOnKey", which was developed
and manufactured by M-Systems.[21] IBM's USB flash drive became available on December 15,
2000,[22] and had a storage capacity of 8 MB, more than five times the capacity of the thencommon floppy disks. with a USB adapter is particularly advantageous for maintaining the integrity
and non-corruptible, pristine state of the booting medium.

USB drives are often called thumb drives, jump drives, USB sticks or flash drives; the earliest USB drive,
sold by IBM was known as a memory key. All of these are the same thing and there is no officially correct
term for these data storage devices. USB drives are compact and easy to carry around. Most are between
two and four inches in length. USB drives replaced floppy disks as the choice, for portable storage and it
was a much-needed upgrade. Another benefit is the speed of data retrieval. If you ever spent several
minutes waiting for those old floppies to load a file, then you should really appreciate how fast flash
drives are able to complete the same task. Additionally the old floppy disks only held a small amount of
data, 1.44mb to be exact. Even the earliest USB drives which held only 8 Mbytes topped that storage
capacity by far. Todays USB drives are large capacity devices and can hold infinitely more data than early
drives once did. 64 Gbytes drives are common and you can purchase 128 GB drives.

A usb is A universal serial bus (USB) flash drive is a small, portable device that plugs into a computer's
USB port. Like a hard disk, a USB flash drive stores information, but with a flash drive you can easily
transfer that information from one computer to another. USB flash drives vary in size and shape and can
hold gigabytes of information. USB flash drives are also called pen drives, key chain drives, key drives,
and memory keys.

Support for USB flash drives is built in natively to most popular operating systems, such as
Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. To use a USB flash drive, simply plug it into an available USB
port on your computer. No additional cables or adapters are required. The drive will appear as a
removable disk that you can access like any other folder. You can then drag and drop files onto
and off of the drive. When you are finished, right click on the flash drive's icon and eject it, then
remove the drive from your computer's USB port. Any files on the flash drive will reside there
until you remove them.
Flash drives are generally "hot-swappable" -- meaning they can be plugged into and removed from a computer at any
time, except when a data transfer operation is in progress. They are generally compatible with Windows, Mac
and Unix-like operating systems.
