Type 2 Conditionals
The conditional sentences of the second type are used to
express situations that could happen if the hypothetical
condition is fulfilled.
For example:
If I had a million dollars, I would buy a big house.
Si tuviera un milln de dlares, comprara una casa grande.
This sentence is known as Second Conditional. It expresses what could
happen if an imaginary or hypothetical condition (which is very unlikely to
happen). *I dont really have the million dollars, I am imagining what I would
do if I had them.
If + condition + consequence
If + Past + would
These sentences are made beginning with IF and adding the condition,
expressed in past tense. Then, you add what you think would happen if the
condition is fulfilled, expressed with would followed by the verb.
If I had a calculator, I would do this homework quicker (but I don't
have a calculator).
Si tuviera una calculadora, hara esta tarea ms rpido (pero no tengo una
calculadora).
If you lost your keys, you would have a big problem.

You should always use past tense in the if clause and the

modal would in the consequence clause. It is wrong to say:

If I would work less, I would have more free time.

If I worked less, I would have more free time.
The modal would can also be used in the contracted form 'd.

If I worked less, I'd have more free time.

The condition can also be negative.

If you didn't eat so much, you would be slim.

You can also make questions.
What would you do if you won the lottery?

Let see the difference between First and Second conditional

sentences:

Type 1: If we take a bus, it will be cheaper.

Si ________________________________________.
Type 2: If we took a bus, it would be cheaper.
Si ________________________________________.
In the first sentence is a general condition, it expresses something
that will happen in the future. Whereas, in the second one its about
an unreal situation, we are talking about the possibility of taking the
bus. It is a hypothetical situation, which may or may not happen, but
that we are just imagining that would happen.
