 APPENDIX 10 - BISHOP'S GUIDELINES FOR

INSTITUTIONS AND INDUCTIONS

 A. PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS
1. Send invitations to all neighbouring clergy, to priests and ministers of other churches,
and civic representatives as appropriate.
2. Notify local press and local radio, and arrange for a friendly welcome to reporters or
press representatives.
3. If possible, arrange some form of social gathering to take place after the Institution. It
would be customary to invite the Bishop, Archdeacon, Rural Dean, visiting clergy and
visitors who have come from a distance, as well as members of the regular congregation.
4. The time for a rehearsal of the service should be arranged with the Rural Dean, who
will need to be present.
5. Arrange for a representative from one of the local Christian churches and a
representative of the local community to be ready to give a welcome in the service to the
new Incumbent.

 B. PRACTICAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE SERVICE

1. Place the Bishop’s chair at the top of the chancel steps, with one hassock for the
Incumbent-designate to use when kneeling before the Bishop. If there is a Eucharist, the
chair should be removed at the Peace. A chair should also be available near at hand for
the Bishop’s Chaplain.
2. If the service takes place in the context of a Eucharist, arrange a seat in the north side
of the sanctuary for the Bishop.
3. Place a table with pen and Bible a few feet to the right or left of the Bishop’s chair, at
the top of the chancel steps, for the signing of the Oaths and Declaration.
NOTE. The Incumbent-designate should be advised that the Oath of Allegiance is taken
with the Bible held in the right hand and facing the congregation, and that the Oath of
Canonical Obedience is taken, still holding the Bible, facing the Bishop.
4. Arrange seats for the Patron or representatives, the Incumbent-designate, visiting
clergy, lay workers and Readers, priests and ministers of other churches, civic dignitaries,
etc.
5. Make robing arrangements for:
(a) The Bishop, Archdeacon, Rural Dean, Bishop’s Chaplain, Incumbent-designate;
(b) Visiting clergy, lay workers and Readers and ministers of other churches;
(c) Choir.
6. Distribute service papers and hymn books to the choir and congregation and see that
these are also provided for the Bishop’s party.
7. Arrange for the saying of a Vestry prayer, and for the announcement of the hymn at the
beginning of the service. This may be done by the priest who has normally taken services
during the vacancy, or by the Rural Dean.
8. The Churchwardens (with staves) should process in and out immediately in front of the
Bishop. In the procession out, the new Incumbent, or Priest-in-Charge, will be led out by
the Bishop to the main door. The rest of the procession will return to the Vestry.
9. Advise the Incumbent-designate where the bell rope is to be found, and help to practise
ringing.
10. The collection is normally given to the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund, and sent to the
Bishop’s secretary at Bishopsgrove.

 C. ORDER OF SERVICE
1. The order of service normally used will be ‘Form of Service for the Instituting and
Inducting of a new Incumbent’.
2. Readings. If the Institution takes place on a Sunday the readings would normally be
those for the day. If it takes place on a week day, the prospective Incumbent and the
Rural Dean should choose readings from the selection provided in the Form of Service
and then inform the Bishop.
3. Hymns. The Rural Dean will probably wish to consult the Incumbent-designate about
the choice of hymns.
4. Charge to mission - page 5. At this point in the service the Incumbent-designate should
stand in front of the Bishop facing east.
5. The new Incumbent will immediately respond to the welcome and may announce
services to take place in the church on the following Sunday.
