Traditional Literature

1. Author - Virginia Hamilton

Illustrator ± Leo and Diane Dillon
2. Title - The People Could Fly
Date of Publication ± 2004
3. Genre ± Folktale
4. Format ± Picture book
5. Award ± Coretta Scott King
6. Summary ± This folktale begins in Africa long ago when some people had
wings, knew magic and could fly. When these people were loaded on ships
to be sold as slaves, they shed their wings. The ships that would carry
them across the ocean were crowded and the wings took up too much
room. They did not forget the magic though but kept it a secret. One
particular old man named Toby remembered the magic well and when the
suffering and misery became too much for a certain slave; he would say
the magic words and that slave would fly away.
7. Strategies to use with the book ±
This book would be a wonderful folktale to use during Black History
month. The students could read the biography of the author, an African-
American woman. This is an old tale that is beautifully illustrated in this
picture book. It would be great to use to introduce a unit on Africa, or
folktales. It is also a great example of storytelling. This story gives an
explanation as to why some slaves disappeared. Students could be asked
to create their own folktale to read or tell to the class that might explain
some event or mystery. This folktale could also be used to open a general
discussion on freedom and what it means to be free.
This folktale could be used in conjunction with the study of the civil war.
Students could research the role slavery played before and during the civil
war. It also could be a starting point to discuss the way slaves lived, their
treatment and what work they traditionally performed. Because this
folktale could be used to explain the disappearance of runaway slaves, it
could be used to open discussion or research on the Underground
Railroad, safe houses and other ways people were able to gain their
freedom from slavery.
It could be an introduction to the slave trade in Africa. How the people
were affected, and what types of coping mechanisms the people that
became slaves used to get through their life situation. Students could
research what other forms of expression that slaves used such as songs
and other stories. The research could be compiled in individual or class
blogs or wikis. Students could also research the history of slavery around
the world and create a map that shows what countries have used slavery
and the countries slaves have come from.

1. Author ± Nelson Mandela

Illustrator ± Cover: Natalie Hinrichsen
Vignettes: Teresa Williams
Map: Abdul Amien
2. Title ± Nelson Mandela¶s Favorite African Folktales
Date of Publication ± 2002
3. Genre ± Folktale
4. Format ± Picture book
5. Award ±
6. Summary ± This book is an anthology of 32 of the oldest African folktales
from various locations across the continent such as Tanzania, Zimbabwe,
Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Swaziland and Morocco collected by Nelson
Mandela. These folktales use favorite themes such as a cunning creature
like a jackal outsmarting everyone, the hyena as an underdog, the lion as a
ruler and the snake as a source of fear.
Many of these tales give explanations for certain animal origins or
characteristics such as à
 which gives the origin
of the house cat. à à gives an explanation of the terms
elephant grass and water snake.

explains how monkeys lost their potbellies and became able to
swiftly romp through the trees. à

is the tale of how
the mantis came to live in the dry plains, changes green to brown with the
seasons and sits with his forelegs help up in praise. Magic spells, scary
cannibals, and people going through metamorphoses are also among the
themes for the collection of folktales.
7. Strategies to use with the book ±
This collection is a good example of folktales that could be included in
the study of traditional literature. These tales could be used to inspire
students to create their own folktales. Students could examine the basic
way a folktale is written and what themes are common to many of the tales.
African folktales could be compared to folktales from other countries to
find common themes and characters. A collection of similar tales could be
created for a folktale blog or wiki.
Because many of the folktales are used to explain characteristics of
particular animals, students in a science class could chose an animal from
one of the folktales to research. They could then make a report on the
animal¶s characteristics and compare and contrast how the animal started
out looking or acting in the folktale and how the actual animal looks or
behaves in life. Students could study what environmental influences can
cause a change in an animal¶s appearance, habitat, and food source.
Students could create a map of where the animals in the folktales live and
designate deserts, grasslands and jungles.
This collection of folktales would be to an interesting introduction for
Black History month, or to the life of Nelson Mandela. Students could
research Nelson Mandela and create a timeline of the events of his life.
They could write their own biography of Nelson Mandela and his
influences.
The book could be read to begin a unit on Africa. The folktales could be a
starting point for the discussion and research of African cultures and the
different countries that make up the continent of Africa. Then students
could create a map of the continent and indicate the country of origin of
each of the folktales in the collection. Groups of students could research
the different African countries and all cultural aspects of a chosen country
and create presentations to post on the class wiki or web page or to
present to their classmates.

1. Author ± Paul Owen Lewis

Illustrator ± Paul Owen Lewis
2. Title ± Storm Boy
Date of Publication ± 1995
3. Genre ± Myth
4. Format ± Picture book
5. Award ±
6. Summary ± A chief¶s son goes fishing alone when a storm comes up. The
boy is washed ashore to a village where everything is large, under a sky he
has never seen before. The people of the village call him ³son of a chief
from above´ and welcome him. He enters a large house where a feast is
going on. The people give him gifts and food and sing him a song of
welcome. The boy joins the people in their native dance and offers to teach
the villagers songs and dances of his own people. This makes him
homesick and the village chief notices and tells the boy that if he wishes to
return to grab his staff, stand behind him, close his eyes, and visualize his
home and family. The boy did as he was told and as he visualized his home
he felt a surge and was carried upward. When the motion stopped, the boy
opened his eyes and saw his home and his mother. While the boy thought
he had only been away a day, he learned he had been gone for a year since
he had disappeared in the storm.
7. Strategies to use with the book ±
This story can be used to teach the characteristics of a myth. They could
read several myths and make charts to list common characteristics of
myths.
This particular story bears a resemblance to the . Students
could read both and make a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the
two. Students could use these examples and try writing their own version
of a story with a storm as a theme.
In a science unit on weather, this story could be used to introduce storms
and how they affect us. Students could study the effects of storms on land
and at sea. Hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and tsunamis could be
compared to see the similarities, causes and effects of each.
Storm Boy is a story of the natives of the Pacific Northwest and could be
an introduction to a study of their culture. Students could research the
culture, people and the land of the Pacific Northwest and make reports or
presentations. They could research other myths or themes in the stories,
songs and dances that are indicative of these tribes of people.

1. Author ± Kate Seredy

Illustrator ± Kate Seredy
2. Title ± White Stag
Date of Publication ± 1937 by The Viking Press, 1979 by Puffin Books
3. Genre ± Legend
4. Format ± Chapter book
5. Award ± Newbery Medal
6. Summary ± This is the telling of how the Hungarian nation was founded. It
follows the migration of three generations of the Hun and Magyar tribes,
their strong leaders, and the tribes wandering from Central Asia to the
Danube Plains. It tells of Attila¶s birth and why he was such a fierce warrior.
7. Strategies to use with the book ±
Students could use research resources to investigate the Magyar
people and the founding of Hungary. They could divide into groups to
research the differences between the Huns and the Magyar tribes. Then
present their findings or post them online. Students could compare this
story with other stories about the founding of Hungary and compare
and contrast them.
A map or diorama of Asia could be created by the students to retrace
the route that the Huns and Magyar tribes made in the book or they
could try to locate the ancestral home of the tribes on an atlas. Students
could use various resources to write a biography of Attila.
This book uses some biblical themes such as chosen people and a
prophecy of a promised land. These themes in the book could be
compared with biblical themes and then charts, diagrams, or reports
made on the similarities.

1. Author ± Jan Brett

Illustrator ± Jan Brett
2. Title ± Town Mouse Country Mouse
Date of Publication ± 1994
3. Genre ± Fable
4. Format ± Picture book
5. Award ±
6. Summary ± This is the story of what happens when mice who live in
town swap houses with mice living in the country. They learn about the
different dangers each other face and that the dangers they are used to
are not as bad as dangers they are not accustomed to. They soon miss
their respective homes and are glad to switch back.
7. Strategies to use with the book ±
This fable could be used to teach students about stories with morals
and the fable genre. It teaches to be careful what you wish for and that a
lifestyle that may look better than yours is not always better. Students
could create a collection of fables and write the moral for each of them.
Students could compare living in a city or town to living in the
country. They could research the pros and cons of each type of living,
then divide into groups and debate which lifestyle they prefer. They
could create Venn diagrams comparing and contrasting city life and
country life.
This book could also be used to introduce a class to letter writing.
Students could divide into groups of town mice and county mice and
write to invite each other to visit. They could describe their life, their
home, what they enjoy, and what dangers might be encountered in their
daily lives.
You could also use the fable to teach sequence and improve listening
skills by having students retell the beginning, middle and end. Students
could retell the story to each other or groups of students could act out
the story.
