their progress on the arboretum rehab...which is not yet complete...hope for the best ! But also I recently heard
they plan to remove the stones from the walk-of-life (see below) which is a shame given the promises made by
Schuller that they would last for so much longer , but at the same me I found it sad that Schuller didn’t take be er
safeguards about protec ng the stones from the elements & foot traffic (a simple sheet of plexi-glass might have
preserved them ) because many of them are seriously "faded" out, so if the catholics don’t remove them, they

2/11/14 RIP,ARVELLA SCHULLER,84, (Thoughts &Prayers for Arvella’s husband, Robert Schuller Sr, the founder of
the Crystal Cathedral,for whom I s ll have much respect & admira on despite the way the CC fell apart in the
end...perhaps not due to any fault of his own... & for all the Schullers regardless of how one analyzes the demise of
the CC...my final feelings are sadness for the whole family even though they may actually be glad,in part,to have the
CC off of their hands..it just became too much & too big for them to handle; yet a lot of people thought they were
inves ng in something that would last "forever", that’s the saddest part of it. Nonetheless,se ng that aside we
extend our condolences to the Schuller family & thank Arvella "for the memories" & the spiritual inspira on. She

I remember Ken from Crystal Cathedral days.

Always friendly:
"Kenneth N. Leestma ’52 of Seal Beach, Calif., died on
Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007. He was 81.
He was born in Holland, Mich., the first child of Peter
and Martha Leestma, and grew up in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Following high school, he served in the Army Air Corps
as staff sergeant in Japan.
A er the war, he graduated from Hope and from
Western Theological Seminary.
He was then ordained and called to be the founding
pastor of Lincoln Avenue Community Church in Pomona,
Calif. This marked the beginning of his fi y-three-year
career as a pastor to congrega ons across the na on
and the world.
Following his ministry in Pomona, a er overseeing the
building of a new sanctuary there, he was called to
Bethel Reformed Church, Sheldon, Iowa. His family now
numbered seven.
In 1966 with wife Be e, David, Pamela, Daniel, Mary and
Mark, he moved to Bradenton, Fla., serving Bayshore
Gardens Reformed Church. A new educa onal building
was completed there just before he accepted a call from
El Dorado Park Community Church, Long Beach, Calif., to
serve as a co-pastor with his colleague and childhood
friend William Miedema ’50. Being back in California
seemed to complete his coast-to-coast ministry.
In 1975, he was called to New Life Community Church in
Artesia as senior pastor. This was the church, formerly
called Artesia Reformed, who first invited the Arcadian
Quartet, represen ng Hope College, to sing. That
invita on gave the quartet singers, Kenneth Leestma,
William Miedema ’50, Warren Hietbrink ’47 and Robert H.

Schuller ’47 their first taste of California. All four began
ministries in California, Kenneth being the first.
Kenneth first re red in 1991, but was asked by the
Reformed Church in America to serve churches in need
of his pastoral exper se in northern California and as far
as Bahrain before he accepted the call to become the
pastor of congrega onal care at the Crystal Cathedral.
This in many ways was the posi on of his life me.
Working with a ministry that he knew so well from its
very beginning, being near his family, and sharing the
joys of ministry longevity with his long me friend Robert
H. Schuller and so many other colleagues, became the
providen al finale of his ministry and life.
Most notable among his many accomplishments, Dr. Ken,
as he was affec onately called, earned his doctoral
degree in pastoral ministry and was a president of The
Reformed Church in America (RCA). He represented the
RCA in Japan and India and provided leadership in the
RCA Classis and Synod throughout his en re ministry. He
also served on the Words of Hope radio ministry board
for eight years.
At the memorial service, David Leestma said of his
father, "Dr. Ken made more hospital calls than a medical
doctor and he made friends with everyone he met. A
man of extraordinary humbleness, integrity, kindness
and love for people, he modeled every biblical gi of the
Spirit more o en than anyone I ever knew. A gentle giant
of a man who will never leave our memory."
He served Hope as a member of the board of trustees
and was presented with a Dis nguished Alumni Award in
1986.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth (Be e) Leestma; five
children, David ’73 (Cathy Schaub ’73) Leestma, Pam
Leestma ’75, Dan Leestma, Mary Leestma (Jack) Tacke ,
and Mark (Selina) Leestma; and seven grandchildren,
including John (Ka e Wierenga ’01) Leestma."

Robert Schuller (Sr),the Crystal Cathedral, & the Hour of Power had a tremendous impact on my life whether I wanted
it or not,due to the fact that my dad ( & us kids & mother) moved from Michigan to California in 1984 to work for
the Crystal Cathedral ministries. My dad took the posi on of director & pastor of pastoral care,occupying the 10th-
floor office of the tower of hope.I was a senior in high school at the me. Later in life on my own I found my own
sense of iden fica on with Robert Schuller’s ministry style,but ini ally it was simply "inherited" so to speak,whether
I liked it or not.And there were mes I didn’t want it or like it. There were pros & cons being associated with the
CC and all its "glamour" in the 80’s. There were those who called Schuller & televangelism a great thing,then there
were others who mocked & ridiculed & cri cized it, & even today you hear pastors who use the word "televangelism"
as a synonym for materialism & the so-called "prosperity gospel" etc even while they themselves are also on tv &
now online as well, & doing quite well,if not be er,for themselves. In many ways it is a cheapshot & used to deflect
scru ny of themselves. Nonetheless,when I later returned to southern California & began my own ministry while
studying in seminary I also came even closer in affilia on with the CC ministries,albeit never came on board formally,
& never took any compensa on from them,other than inspira on. I also iden fied partly with the senior Schuller’s
midwest roots (I myself was born in Iowa & grew up in Michigan,altho not on a farm). Its hard not to admire what the
senior Schuller accomplished in terms of building a ministry in such a spectacular manner & inspiring so many people.
Towards the end of the ministry (at the crystal cathedral) & the subsequent bankruptcy,the family ma ers convoluted
everything, & "nepo sm" turned out to be the "fatal flaw" of the opera on,but the groundwork he laid lives on both
as the opera on of a new ministry at the site (ie the Roman Catholic diocese of orange) and also at the new loca on
where the Hour of Power lives on. Hence,he planted a mustard seed & it bloomed, & a kernel of wheat must die for
a new plant or plants to blossom. I will have more to say later. RIP,ROBERT H. SCHULLER ,see more at
