Lesson Plan

Lesson Topic: Penny Wise, Pound Foolish (reading)
Time: 50 min
Lesson aims:
to practice reading for specific information
to introduce new vocabulary
to practice speaking skills
Materials: textbooks
Methods: conversation, explanation, examples
Activity 1 : Warm-up
Aim : to lead in the students, talking about shopping for presents, to the topic of
the lesson
Procedure:
-T asks Ss how often they go shopping, where they, their parents or
their friends go shopping (at supermarkets, department stores, shopping centres,
online) and how do they pay (in cash, by credit card, by cheque)
-Ss answer the questions
- T asks them if they enjoy buying presents and what would they buy
for their six-year-old brother/best friend/grandparents/boss on their birthday.
-Ss answer could be related to jewellery, an antique ornament/clock,
clothes, a CD, a piece of art (painting), an expensive pen, a diary, a leather wallet, a
bunch of flowers, bath oils etc.
Interaction: individual work
Timing: 5
Activity 2: Speaking and Listening
Aim: to introduce the new topic of the lesson Penny Wise, Pound Foolish by
explaining the proverb
Procedure : - T reads out the title of the unit and explains the meaning of the
proverb (people who are careful with small amounts of money are often wasteful
with large amounts)

-T elicits from Ss other proverbs they can think of related to shopping


and money (You get what you pay for!; A penny for your thoughts!; A fool and his
money are soon parted)
-T explains unknown vocabulary if necessary
-T explains that Ss will listen to people talking about their best ever
given present and they will have to identify the present and the person who gave
the present to them.
-Ss listen carefully and answer the questions
-T asks the Ss what was the best present ever given to them, who gave
the present to them and on what occasion.
-Ss answer the questions
Interaction : T.-Ss, Ss-T
Timing : 10
Activity 3 : Reading
Aim : to look for specific information regarding some characteristics of personality
while knowing someone`s star sign
Procedure : -T asks Ss to look at the zodiac sign and explains them that there are
twelve signs of the zodiac and that their star sign depends on their birth date. T
asks questions such as: Do you take your zodiac seriously or you consider it as just
fun? Do you think you can know somebody by simply knowing what their star sign
is?
-Ss elicit answers
-T asks Ss when were they born, what is their star sign and then
describe their personality.
-Ss answer the questions
-T asks Ss what they take into consideration when they choose a
present for someone
-T. asks Ss. to scan the text and find out if knowing someone`s star
sign can help in deciding on an appropriate present.
-T explains that they have to read the article again and for questions
1-14 they have to choose from the star signs A-F, then T reads the questions and
explains any unknown words
-Ss read the article and follow the T`s advice in order to complete the
task successfully.
-T checks the multiple matching exercise

Activity 4 : Writing
Aim : to introduce new vocabulary regarding some characteristics of personality
Procedure:
-T allows Ss two or three minutes to read the text again and ask Ss to
explain the words in bold by giving examples or synonyms. Then, T asks Ss to find
opposites of the highlighted adjectives.
-Ss write the synonyms in their notebooks
-T interferes if necessary
Interaction : pair work
Timing : 10
Activity 5 : Speaking
Aim : to identify the characteristics of each star sign
Procedure : -Ss are asked to write notes about the characteristics of each star sign
and their appropriate presents
-Ss write notes in their notebooks and then present them to the class
Interaction : group work
Timing : 10
Activity 6 : Assigning the homework & feed-back
Procedure : Collect information about Chinese horoscope and find the similarities
and differences.
Timing : 3
Feedback and evaluation: T goes through the vocabulary learnt one more time
eliciting it from the Ss.
The T gives an evaluative feedback to the class, marking the Ss
who participated the most and those who have given good answers.
