Jose Rizal Movie Review

The movie portrays Rizal's life and works in an interesting and informative manner. It shows the cruelty of the Spanish colonizers and how this led Rizal to write his novels which awakened Filipino nationalism. Key events like Fray Damaso's abuse of power and the suppression of education were depicted accurately based on the novels. Struggles Rizal faced like imprisonment and threats against his work pushed him to consider revolution, though he never planned violence.

1.

Overall reaction of the movie and its portrayal of Rizals life and
works.
1

The movie overall for me is elaborate and informative at the same

time quite entertaining. 2The life and works of Rizal was portrayed in an
interesting manner that the plot of events was arranged in a manner that the
audience can understand it easily. 3It shows how the Philippines looks like
during the Spanish colonization which made me realize how cruel the
Spaniards were in those times. 4Now I understand how Rizal felt like of the
injustices and Friar oppressions which provoked him to write his two famous
novels that awakened the nationalism of the Filipinos. 5The movie also gave
me ideas of the old lifestyle in the Philippines in those times. 6Filipinos were
greatly influenced by Spanish culture and lifestyle and it is observable in the
movie on how they dress and their fluency in speaking Spanish language. 7I
think Cesar Montano also gave justice in portraying our Philippine National
Hero. 8I know that it was a challenge for him because he had to know to
speak Spanish language for the scenes in the movie but I think he was
perfect for the role. 9Other than Cesar Montano, great actors like Joel Torre,
Jaime Fabregas and Pen Medina also portrayed their characters very well.
10
The life and works of Jose Rizal is essential for me to know as a Filipino
student because it is how it started to mold our Filipino nationality that is
clearly portrayed in the movie.
2. How did the Noli Me Tangere portrayed the real events that
happened in the Philippines for the last 30 years of Spanish rule?
1

The Noli Me Tangere showed how cruel are the Spanish Government
and even the Church back then. 2Fray Damaso which is the main antagonist
in the novel, ordered his men to dug up Don Rafaels corpse to be
transferred in a Chinese cemetery, which despite all of Don Rafaels good
deeds to him and to others. 3Fray Damaso also raped Pia Alba who died after
gaving birth to Maria Clara. 4These events show how the Friars use their
power and authority for their personal and evil purposes. 5The deprivation of
proper education is also portrayed in the novel when Ibarra was almost shot
dead in the opening of the newly built school he sponsored. 6The events in
the cockpit in the novel also show how Filipinos engage in such gambling.
3. What were the significant events portrayed in the film that
pushed Rizal to consider revolution?

Rizal never planned a bloody revolution against the Spanish authority

but challnges and problems he faced changed his perspective. 2While
studying in Europe, he received a letter from his brother Paciano. 3Instead of
expected good news, Rizal felt angry and worried for the problems caused by
the Spaniards faced by his family and other Filipinos back in the Philippines.
4
He also received threats from enemies regarding his writings. 5When he got
back in the Philippines, he was imprisoned in Dapitan for almost four years.
6
He also found out that his beloved Leonor Rivera was arranged to marry
Charles Kipping by her parents. 7These events forced Rizal to consider the
option of revolution.
4. Why is it that revolution in the El Filibusterismo did not
materialzed? Explain.
1

Revolution in the El Filibusterismo did not succeed because the

Filipinos were not yet that ready. 2They are no match with the power and
rifles of the Spaniards. 3Like Isagani who confronted Simouns plan of
revenge, they are still blinded by the oppressions and injustices of the
Spaniards that deprives them to see the spirit of nationalism within them.
4
Another reason is that Filipinos were not that united which makes the forces
divided and limited. 5Spies working for the Spaniards to reveal revolution
plans were also a factor.
5. How did Rizal resolve to undertake the necessary changes in the
Philippines in his Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo?
1

Rizals works were banned to be distributed in the Philippines by the

Spaniards because of its contents which criticizes Spanish rule in the
Philippines. 2However, some copies are smuggled by some Filipinos to be
distributed to other areas. 3The contents of the said novels awakened the
Filipino nationalism within them. 4They began to realize that they have to
fight for their rights and freedom. 5Rizals novels also give attention to the
importance of education as a solution to poverty. 6Rizal never intended to
cause bloodsheds because of his works. 7He intends to reveal the real events
happening in the Philippines during the Spanish rule to the Filipinos and to
the world.
