I.

General Description
Guangzhou is a big city in China and become third largest city in China. It is located in
Guangdong province and become the capital city of the province. As a biggest population
in the world, Guangzhou has amount about 11 million people (source :
www.chinahighlights.com). This condition makes many travel activity in Guangzhou.
Fjellstrom (2010) stated that Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) can become solution for travel
activity in the city. The concept of Guangzhou BRT adopted from Bogota BRT that has
successful story in development of public transport in Bogota city.
At 2010, BRT of Guangzhou has been ready operated in the city. The route maps of
Guangzhou BRT can be seen in the figure below,

Guangzhou BRT had length of route about 22.5 km in the city of Guangzhou. People who
used travel by BRT must pay fare 2 yuan (1.5 yuan with smart card). This fare was still
cheap for all passenger because government still give subsidy to operate this public
transport (source : http://www.worldbrt.net).
II.

History and Planning of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Guangzhou


Guangzhou BRT planned by government as transformation of travel activity there. This
because Guangzhou is very known as foreign merchant and traders in China. Fjellstorm
(2010) showed that the history of development Guangzhou BRT among others,
1. 2005 : Conceptual plan, demand analysis & corridor comparison
2. 2006 : Phase II planning; further traffic, operational and design planning& demand
analysis for phase I
3. 2007-2008 : Implementation planning & design. Final station & operational design,
BRT authority, architecture, engineering design, metro integration,NMT,integration
4. 2009 : BRT construction, regulatory set-up, refinement of operational plan,
promotion & outreach, vehicle procurement
5. 2010 : BRT operation
Planning of Guangzhou has been finished and ready to operate in February 2010, with
description like table below,

Succesfull story of BRT Guangzhou


After implemented 5 years, BRT Guangzhou has reached become one of the best BRT in
the world (source : http://www.worldbrt.net). Many effects that brought by this BRT to
the city, like more comfort, more safety and more friendly to use that. Development and
successful story of this BRT among others,
1. Guangzhou BRT has high safety for passenger, this proven with sliding doors at
the gates. So, passengers feels more safety and enter BRT with more comfortable.
2. There are operational control for all Guangzhou BRT. So, authority can control all
BRT when its working and fast to solve all problem in BRT system.
3. There is high technology for the system of BRT, like GZ BRT loading platform,
real-time signage, and pre-board payment
4. There are many bike stations to integrating modes from or to the shelter from
peoples places. Besides, many bike lines built around BRT corridors. Newest
development are built 113 bike-sharing stations to make passengers travel from
shelter easily to their purposes. Beside this can make easily, this strategy include
for environment friendly, because it is zero emission.
5. There are integration modes from BRT station to another modes, like integration
with Metro in Guangzhou.
6. BRT station is located in strategic places on the city. This strategy make own
attractiveness to the people to use BRT as their primary travel.An example for
location of BRT station can be seen in the figure below,

Potential Improvement
There is not system who have perfect system. Same with this, Guangzhou BRT has many
potential improvement to make better in the future. Continous improvement needed for
all company, no except for BRT. Many improvement that has potential to develop by
Guangzhou BRT, among others,
Developing integrated ticketing system.
In current BRT system in Guangzhou, Ticketing system still operated just for one
modes only. If people will go by another modes, like with metro, people must buy
their ticket again to take metro. In the future, integrating of all transport modes is
very important to make comfortable for passengers.
Electric bus to decrease pollution (zero emission)
Sustainbility is one important factor especially for the future. In the next
development, it is important to introduce new electric bus for reduce emissions.
Nowadays, issues for energy is one important issue in the world discussion. Thus,
this is potential improvement for Guangzhou BRT to support the issues and make
environmental friendly.
Decrease conflict with pedestrian crossing
In current condition, crossing with pedestrian is important thing that must develop
in the future. Although there is many signal and board to make safety for the
passengers, this problem must thinking to make higher safety. This possible
solution that can solve this is like the tunnel only for people that located upper or in
the bottom of BRT lane.
Improvement infrastructure (park and ride, corridors, signal. Etc)
Friendly for disable, child and old people
No operational subsidy
Operational system in Guangzhou BRT until now still develop by the government.
Government take many roles in the system, like there are subsidies to make lower
price in BRT. In the future, development of BRT must take no subsidies. Thus, BRT
operator can easy to make innovation for the system and finally, the system can
make easy to attract people to use this public transport as peoples travel.

V.

Conclusion
Based from text above, it can conclude that,
BRT of Guangzhou was become one of the best BRT in the world and it can be
one good example to implemented this concept to another city.
Although Guangzhou BRT has good BRT, there is many improvements to
associate with future needs and become sustainable public transport.
