EDUC 2220 Technology Lesson Plan

This lesson plan outlines a two-day technology-based activity for 4-5 year olds to explore patterns using smartboards, iPads, and digital cameras. On the first day, children will use smartboards to complete simple patterns. The second day, they will rotate between creating their own patterns on iPads, taking pictures of patterns with cameras, and continuing pattern activities on smartboards. The lesson aims to help children recognize, duplicate, and extend patterns as outlined in the Ohio Early Learning & Development Standards.

Lesson
Summary:

Children will be able to use a smartboard and/or iPad to create patterns or extend
patterns started by others. They will also be able to use cameras to take pictures
of patterns they create within the classroom.

Estimated
Duration:

This will be roughly a two hour lesson. Since I am working with a young age group,
I will split the lesson up into two 60 minutes sessions over the course of 2 days.
The first day will solely focus on working on the smartboard to finish patterns. This
will help introduce patterns and make sure the children understand the concept.
The following day, the smartboard, iPads, and digital cameras will be rotation
activities for 45-50 minutes.

What preparation is needed?

Setting up smartboard station, including a sign-up sheet for children wanting to participate
Creating smartboard template for patterns
Setting up iPad stations, also with sign-up sheet
Practice using smartboard and iPads to ensure there are no problems
Make sure cameras are charged, create and laminate pattern cards
What materials will be used?
2 Smartboards, 4 iPads, 4 digital cameras, pattern cards
How will the learning environment be set up?
Two smartboards will be hanging in the classroom for children to use to finish pattern
sequences. Though only one child can used the smartboard at a time, there will be two
children at each smartboard taking turns.
Cameras will be placed on a table next to cards with pictures of patterns. The children will
be able to walk around the classroom with the cameras and take pictures of patterns they
make that match the ones on the card.
4 (one child per iPad) iPads will be placed on a table in the classroom. The children will be
able to use the iPads to create their own pattern from scratch.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
The first 5 minutes I will use to introduce patterns. I will explain what a pattern is (introduce
vocabulary) and give some examples. The next 5 minutes I will use to introduce the children to
the smartboard activity and how it works. The next 45 minutes, the smartboard will be open for
children to take turns finishing patterns that have already been started. For example: there could
be pictures of circles that are the following colors: red, red, blue, red, red, ______). These will be
set up in a multiple choice type fashion, giving one right option and 2-3 wrong options. The
children will be able to complete these patterns by selecting items/pictures from the bottom of
the screen and dragging them to the right place. During this time, I will be observing students
and writing assessments to see which students excel at this activity and which students may
need more assistance.
Day 2:
The first 5 minutes I will use to review what we did yesterday. The next 5-10 minutes I will use to
introduce the iPad and camera activities. The next 45-50 minutes, children will be able to freely
choose which activity they would like to do, but taking turns ensuring each child gets an
opportunity at each center. The children who exceled at the smartboard activity will be
encouraged to use the iPads to create their own patterns. During this activity, I will be taking
pictures and notes for documentation.

This is a link for a parent section of pbs.org. Here, they have a variety of online math games for
children. This specific game is aimed towards preschool-kindergarten children and deals with
matching patterns. The children will be able to match patterns by their picture or by the
patterning sequence. This is a fun way to help children grasp the concept of patterning as well as
practicing patterns and matching
Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated
(changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students:
For accelerated students, this activity could be modified by having them complete more
challenging patterns, or filling in the blanks of patterns that are missing items.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling
with the material:
For children that may be struggling with this activity, fewer options could be given when
completing the patterns on the smartboard so they dont have so many to choose from
