STEM Committee Assignments Updates

October 22, 2014

Role

Update

Lego FrameworksBarnes and Quinn

Links for LEGO educational websites will be placed on

the STEM icon very soon.

Science Lab/STEM Lab

Stein and Durant

Our wonderful parent volunteers have been organizing

our STEM labs; they are currently awaiting containers
and labels. They have also been working on making
spreadsheets of the materials that our EIE kits will
need; however, the materials themselves ended up being
so massive, that the order needs to be broken into first
semester needs and second semester needs. This is the
information gathering process that we are involved in at
the moment.

STEM Lab Backpacks

Durant

Empty Backpacks are in the STEM Lab. There has

been zero requests to fill backpacks. An email will go
out this week asking for any requests.

Standards List
Durant

Completed in September, 2014

Business Partners
Taylor, Rhinehart,
Lambert

These are the conversations that have begun and will

evolve throughout this process with grade level input.
K and 1st - Mercer University - Dr. Deb - Life Cycles
and Habitats (Garden Focus)
2nd & 3rd - Atlanta Botanical Garden - Habitats and
Plant Diversity (In-House and Field Trips)
4th & 5th - Bennett-Pless Structural Engineering Firm (Load bearing bridge project to begin)
2nd - 5th - Georgia State University - Urban Habitat
Restoration - Community Mapping & Research Project
I feel great that these are solid and invested

partnerships with strong connections to the school.

Andrew, Rachael, and I are meeting with Bennett-Pless
this afternoon. Meeting with Dr. Tim Hawthorne, GSU,
next week to talk more about the Mapping Project. The
Botanical Garden called to see if we would be interested
in being a research site for a poisonous dart frog
project.

STEM Stars Program

Lambert and Manzi

First months projects came in (plastic grocery bag).

Nat and I are working on getting Octobers out in the
next week or so.

STEM Buddies Program

Rhinehart and Quinn

The 2nd-5th grade STEM Buddies will be working

together to do activities in the STEM garden and doing
activities that will meet the standards for both grade
levels. These grade levels have already been assigned.
We are currently working on assigning STEM Buddies
for PreK-1st.

STEM Club
Miller and Foley

The STEM club has met twice. The club is split into
grades K-2, and grades 3-5. There are 51 kids in the
K-2 club, and 50 kids in the 3-5 club. They meet
monthly from 2:30-4:00. K-2 is doing an engineering
unit called Bubble Bonanza from the eie site, and 3-5 is
doing an engineering unit called Go Green! Making
Recycled Racers also from the eie site.

Coding Club
Barnes

Coding Club has started in September with 5th graders

in the morning. Mr. Martin (Devin Martins dad) is
assisting Mr. Barnes. They are using the scratch
program and will create new apps.

Lego Robotics Club

Barnes

The Lego Robotics Club started in early October. The

Lego Robotics competition is in December.

Garden Club
Quinn

The first Garden Club meeting will be held tomorrow.

The focus of the Garden Club will be garden-to-table.
We are currently working on some contacts with
restaurants to assist us in planning our gardens. We are
in need of more raised beds being built for the Garden
Club to use in the Spring.

Odyssey of the Mind

The OM teams have been formed and practices will

Miller

begin in early November. The regional competition is

Saturday, March 7th.

Science Olympiad
Rhinehart and Manzi

Dates TBA sometime in spring

STEM Lab
Orientation/Scheduling
Foley

STEM Lab Orientation is complete. We need to see

more teachers using the Lab. It really should be
utilized about 75% of the school day. Currently we are
at less than 10%
There is a rubbermaid cabinet now located in the STEM
lab that is holding STEM Club materials. We will put a
sign on it, but please do not touch the materials in this
cabinet.

STEM Documentation
Everyone

Documentation crate for Specials and STEM Club is

located in Foleys room. All grade levels have
documentation crates and folders. A dropbox has been
set up as well with the exact same folders for digital
files.

STEM Fair
Manzi

Will take place the first week of March. Reminders will

be sent out bi-weekly to teachers about saving their
projects for display.

Grant Writing

We received a new garden grant! In November six

teachers and staff members will be attending an
Inservice at the Chattahoochee Nature Center to begin
our schoolwide program for our Captain Planet
Foundation Project Learning Garden. As part of the
program, our existing school garden program will receive
the following:

Three (3) interdisciplinary garden lessons tied to
Georgia Performance Standards for each grade level
(K-5 or 6-8), including kits with supplies for hands-on
lessons;

Professional development workshops;

Fully-equipped mobile kitchen cart for

taste-testing foods from the garden or math & science
lessons in the classroom;

Outdoor Classroom Kit, with basic supplies (like a

wagon, cones, magnifying glasses, etc) for outdoor
learning;

Assistance with summer garden management;

Colorful, interpretive garden signs (elementary

schools only)

The opportunity to qualify for a $500 garden

enhancement grant, upon completion of lesson feedback
surveys, tasting event surveys, and student pre- /
post-tests (Year 2)

The opportunity to qualify for a $500 garden

enhancement grant, upon completion of the Interactive
Sustainability Tool Kit to help 3rd year Learning Garden
schools transition to independence while maintaining a
record of garden assets and resources (Year 3).

Painting
Baldwin

Painting in the lab is close to completion. John Lenz is

putting the STEM 7-Step Process on something to hang
in the back of the room. We still need to move the
bulletin board out of the STEM lab and have it hung up
where the space information is now.

The egg drop competition will be on Friday, November

Days
Miller and Foley

14th. We will need help getting egg donations. Last

year the donations came from Oak Grove Market. We
will also need to contact the fire department to see if
they will come for the final drop Friday afternoon
instead of Mrs. Taylor getting on the roof. The egg
drop will utilize different supplies than last year.
