The document discusses the property A.M ≥ G.M ≥ H.M for algebra, where A.M is the arithmetic mean, G.M is the geometric mean, and H.M is the harmonic mean. It provides examples of using this property to find maximum or minimum values of expressions when certain variables are summed or multiplied. Key examples include finding the maximum value of a product given a sum, or the minimum value of a sum given a product. The property allows transforming the terms in a sum or product to match what is given to then apply the A.M ≥ G.M inequality.

You are on page 1/ 4

Hey guys..Sorry for being late. Actually was little bit occupied.

But I can (I guess)

compensate my absence with a beautiful article. In this article, I am taking only 1
property of algebra. Algebra does not end here. Rather this is only 1%. I always
have a fascination about algebra. My such interest inspire me to write about this
properties. All of you known what are A.M, G.M., H.M. and a property

A.M ≥G.M.≥H.M.
By mastering over this valuable diamond of algebra. You can solve many mysteries.
I am raising level of difficulty question by question. So that, you can understand it
well so here we go:-

Property: AM.≥G.M. (1)

Let there are n observations say a1, a2,……….an

n
So (1) = (a1+a2+…..an) ≥ √ a1.a2.......an
Tip:- Use this property when

(1) Sum is given and max. product is asked.

(2) Product is given and min. sum is asked.

when sum is given and max. product is asked:-

 a,b,c are +ve variables and a+b+c=15,what is the maximum value of a x b

xc?
We know that AM.≥G.M.
So, we will apply it on a, b, c
a+b+ c
3
= 3 ≥ √ a.b.c
15
= 3 ≥ (abc)1/3
= abc ≤ 53 = 125
=abc (max.) = 125

 If 2a+3b+4c=12; find the max value of abc?

Apply property on 2a, 3b, 4c
2 a+3b +4 c
= 3 ≥ (2a.3b.4c)1/3
=12/3 ≥ (24abc)1/3
=43 ≥ 24abc
=abc ≤ 64/24=8/3
so, max value of abc is 8/3
 If a+b+c= 12 max value of (a+1)(b+2)(c+3)=?
In these type of sums we will always try to make term as in product. Since in
product we need a+1, b+2, and c+3. So, we will make it in given sum
=a+b+c+=12 ( Given)
=(a+1)+(b+2)+(c+3)=12+1+2+3=18
Now apply AM.≥G.M. on (a+1)(b+2) and (c+3)
( a+1)+( b+2 )+( c+3 )
= 3 ≥ {(a+1)(b+2)(c+3)}1/3
=(a+1)(b+2)(c+3)≤63
=216

 If a+b+c=216, find max. value of a3b2c?

In product we need a3i.e. a.a.a
And b2 i.e. b.b
And c as it is.
And a+b+c= 216 (Given)
Now to get the reqd. thing
a a a
We will write a as 3 + 3 + 3
b b
And b as 2 + 2
And c as it is
So 1 can be written as
a a a b b
= 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 +c=216
a a a b b
Apply the property on 3 , 3 , 3 , 2 , 2 ,c
a a a b b a b
=( 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 +c) / 6 ≥ {( 3 )3( 2 )2c}
=216/6 ≥ {a3b2c/27x4}1/6
=a3b2c ≤ (36)6x27x4

 If 2a+3b+c=18 what is max. value of a2b4c3?

Now we need a2 i.e a.a
And b4 i.e. b.b.b.b
And c3 i.e. c.c.c
And 2a+3b+c= 18 (Given)
Now to get reqd. thing, we will write 2a=a+a
3b 3b 3b 3b
And 3b= 4 + 4 + 4 + 4
c c c
And c = 3 + 3 + 3
Apply property on all these 9 terms
2 a+3b +c 3b c
= 9 ≥ {a.a.( 4 )4 ( 3 )3}1/9
3 3 3 3 1 1 1
=18/9 ≥(a b c .( 4 .
2 4 3 4 . 4 . 4 ) 3( . 3 . 3 ))1/9
3 3 3 3 1 1 1
=2 ≥ (a b c .( 4 . 4
9 2 4 3
. 4 . 4 ) ( 3 . 3 . 3 )
)
=(29x44x33)/34 ≥ a2b4c3

=(29x44)/3 ≥ a2b4c3
So value is (29x44)/3

If product is given and minimum sum is asked

 If ab=6, min value of 2a+3b=?

Apply property 2a, 3b
2a+ 3b
= 2 ≥ √ 2a. 3b
2a+ 3b
= 2 ≥ √ 6ab
2a+ 3b
= 2 ≥ √ 6 x6 = 6
=2a+3b ≥ 12
Min. value of 2a+3b=12

a b
 If a and b are +ve numbers what is min. value of b + a ?
a b
Apply property on b , a
1 a b a b
= 2 ( b + a )≥ ( b . a )1/2
a b
= b + a ≥2
 Which is smaller 101201 or 201!
Apply property on 1,2,3,4……,201
AM.≥G.M.
=(1+2+3+…+201)/201 ≥(1.2.3.4……201)1/201
=101201≥ 201!

I hope you have understood the whole concept. Questions will be appreciated with
terse answers.
