Syllabus Outline 20th Century Music

Course Description
20th Century Composition Workshop will cover 4 big composers of early 20th century,
namely Debussy, Bartok, Stravinsky and Schoenberg. Popular and Typical Works of the 4
composers, including both Piano pieces and Large Orchestral/Chamber works, will be
workshopped and analyzed in order to understand and appreciate better the language
of the composers. Analysis is done both individually and in groups, guided by the
lecturer. The course will culminate in the performance of the stylisticcomposition works by
the students by professional musicians in two concerts throughout the Semester.

Student Composition
The student is expected to be able to compose like his/her chosen composers, using the
musical techniques, harmonic languages, rhythmic treatments and the overall styles of
Debussy/Bartok/Stravinsky/Schoenberg.

Student Presentations and Guided Presentation


The Student is expected to present their research and analysis of the chosen Piano works.
The presentations include informations like stylistic and relevant biographical information
of the composers, and especially detailed analysis of their works. Research is hoped to
be done in academic manner, with ample Reading materials from books, essays,
dissertations and thesis. Hard-copy and Soft-copy Score is also required as a proof of
analysis.
Guided Presentation is done for Larger Orchestral or Chamber Works. Students are
expected to analyze bits and parts of the works, e.g. Harmony, Orchestration, Rhythm,
Melody during class together with the Lecturer to discover the piece.
