11 A hollow cylinder with ID and OD 100 mm and 320 mm respectively, generates heat
at the rate of 1500 W/m 3. The thermal conductivity of the cylinder is 0.75 W/m K.
The maximum temperature occurs at a radius of 110 mm and the temperature of the
outer surface is 600C. Calculate a) The temperature at the inner surface and b)
the maximum temperature in the cylinder.

12 A metal plate of 5 cm thickness is initially at 300 0C. suddenly it is exposed to an

ambient at 300C with a convective heat transfer coefficient of 500 W/m 2K.
Calculate
10
a) The centre temperature at t = 2 minutes after the start of the cooling
b) The temperature at a depth of 1.0 cm from the surface at t = 2 minutes after the
start of the cooling.
c) Energy removed from the plate during this time of 2 minutes. Assume the
surface area of 2m2.
Assume, K = 60 W/m-K, C = 460 J/Kg-K, = 7850 kg/m3, = 1.6 x 10-5 m2/s
of the plate.
13 Air flows over a flat plate at a velocity of 10 m/s, Air and surface temperature of
the plate are 200C and 5800C respectively. Calculate the amount of heat
transferred per meter width from both sides of the plate over a distance of 40 cm
from the leading edge. Take air properties of 300 0C, =0.615 kg / m3, = 48.20
x 10-6 m2/s, Pr = 0.674 and k = 46.05 x 10 -3 W/m-K.

15 A counter flow heat exchanger is to heat air outering at 400 0C with a flow rate of 6
kg/s by the exhaust gas entering at 800 0C with a flow rate of 4 kg/s. The overall
heat transfer coefficient is 100 W/m 2 K and the outlet temperature of air is 551.5 0C.
Specific heat of air, Cp, for both air and exhaust gas can be taken as 1100 J/kg-K

1.00 mm thick) are fitted on to a 2.5 cm diameter tube. Fin base temperature is
1700C and the ambient fluid temperature is 25 0C estimate the heat loss per fin the
heat transfer coefficient h may be taken as 130 W/m 2K.
