Reception Activities
Day 1:

Communication Language and Literacy


Review the sound “oi”. Find objects at home with the oi sound e.g. coin. Take a picture of as
many oi objects/ words as possible.

Problem Solving Reasoning and Number


We are learning to count back to find the remainder

1. FUN WITH FOOD


Children to cut a banana into pieces. Line up the pieces. How many? Eat one. How many now?
Continue until all the banana has gone

2. DOWN THE SNAKE


Draw a snake with twenty segments and number them from 1 to 20. Place a counter on 20. In
turn toss a coin and move the counter accordingly. Heads count back 1 space, tails count back 2
spaces. Encourage your child to say, before they move their counter, the number they think will
land on. The first to reach 1 is the winner.

Vocabulary support: Number names one to twenty, how many?, more, less, the number before,
the number after, take away, count back

Creative Development
1. Decorate your snake; colour in the segments, give him eyes and a funny face, colour in the
background. Bring your snake board into school and play the game with your friends.
2. Paint a rainbow, practice colour mixing skills and remember 7 colours: red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, indigo, violet. Bring your rainbow into school – is it the same as the class collage?

Day 2:

Communication Language and Literacy


Review the sound “ear” Think of words at home with the ear sound e.g. dear
Draw pictures of the word you can think of/ write the word e.g. fear and draw a ghost, tear and
draw somebody crying

Problem Solving Reasoning and Number


We are learning to count back to find the remainder

1. COUNT DOWN
Using your fingers count down first from 10 to blast off and then 20 to blast off

2.WATER PLAY
Fill a small plastic bottle by counting spoons of squash or water into it. How many spoons?
Children give several toys spoons of squash each. After each toy, work out how many spoons of
squash is left in the bottle.

Knowledge and Understanding


We have been learning about colour and artists. Have a look at home at the pictures on the
walls – take photographs of the art work/ or recreate it yourself - bring into school to share
with the class. Do we know the artists? E.g. Van Gogh, Pollock, Kandinsky  Compare the art at
home to what you have looked at in school. Share preferences.

Day 3:

Write a postcard to a friend in your class telling them what you are doing
Dear Miss Giles, I am swimming in the pool and having fun. From xxxx
Encourage your child to listen to the sounds they can hear in the words and help them sound
out. Let the children write independently 

Problem Solving Reasoning and Number

1. FUN WITH FOOD


How many biscuits? Count biscuits (snack of your choice) into a pile, using 2 toys allow your
child to give each toy and themselves a snack, how many snacks are left? We gave away 3, use
your fingers to count down. Count fingers left to check. Play again.

2.NUMBER TRACK
Cut out the number cards (attached sheet) put them in order from 20-1, count back from 20 to
1. Replay the game turning one number card over each time until all cards are turned over

Listen to the colour mixing colour song and have a go yourself 

Make a rainbow – find objects at home: red in colour arrange them in a semi circle to form the
outside of the rainbow, next find orange objects and arrange them inside the red. Continue
until a rainbow has been made. Take a picture of your rainbow to bring in and show – childrens
work to be displayed 

Day 4:

Communication Language and Literacy


Children to go on a colour hunt around the house. Can they find all colours of the rainbow? To
take a photograph of each colour and use the refrain “I can see red, the ……e.g. teapot… is red”
Repeat until all 7 colours have been found.

Problem Solving Reasoning and Number


We are learning to count back to find the remainder

1. NUMBER SONG
Sing a number song together e.g. 10 green bottles sitting on a wall

2. SHOPPING BAG
Put up to 10 items in a shopping bag (alternatively go shopping together). Take items out 1,2 and
3 at a time. How many left? How do you know? Use finger play to check – count fingers
together. Repeat using 15 and then 20 items in the shopping bag.

Creative development
Collect magazines and coloured leaflets/ paper. Find the rainbow colours to create a collage
rainbow. Tear small pieces out of the magazines and glue onto paper in rainbow shape. Bring
your collage rainbow into school with your rainbow photograph to display on the wall.

Day 5:

Key word practice: I, can, see. To write a repeated sentence; orally rehearsed yesterday
I can see red…etc Encourage your child to listen to the sounds they can hear in the words and
help them sound out. Let the child write independently 

Problem Solving Reasoning and Number


We are learning to count back to find the remainder

1. SWEET SHOP
Make peppermint creams***. Count peppermint creams into a pile, using 2 toys allow your child
to give each toy and themselves a peppermint, how many are left? We gave away 3, use your
fingers to count down. Count fingers left to check. Play again.

2. COUNT DOWN
Use the number cards (already cut out) shuffle, put in a pile and turn upside down. Take in turns
to turn over a card e.g. 5 count back from each number 5,4,3,2,1. Repeat with all cards

Creative Development
To make peppermint creams and use food colouring of your favourite colour to make them.

Peppermint creams:
Tin of condensed milk
Peppermint essence
Lemon juice
Food colouring
Icing sugar 400g
Empty condensed milk into large bowl. Add 4 drops peppermint essence and 1 teaspoon lemon
juice to taste. Add food colouring (optional). Gradually add icing sugar to the mix, stir
continuously until it becomes dough like. Roll out mixture and cut into shapes and leave to
harden.
