Lesson 1 Initials of Pinyin

Part I Some Basics of Pinyin
What is Pinyin?
Pinyin, or (hn y pn yn) is the official phonetic system
to transcribe Mandarin Chinese sounds into the Roman alphabet. It
was invented in 1950s, and adopted as a standard in mainland
China in 1958. Pinyin is used for several purposes, such as
teaching Chinese, transcribing names and places into the Roman
alphabet, and used as an input method for typing Chinese
characters.
How does Pinyin make a sound?
Each Pinyin sound consists of three components: an initial, a final
and a tone. Initials are generally consonants (b, p, m, f etc.) and
finals are generally vowels (a, e, i, o, u). Pinyin uses the same
letters as the English alphabet except for the letter v plus the
addition of . For example:

ho

is one of the most commonly used character in

Chinese, meaning good, okay, and hello! The
pinyin for this character is ho. h is the initial of
the character, ao is the final, and v is the tone
mark which indicates the third tone.
